    http://starfireproject.com/chess/lasker.html
EMANUEL LASKER (1868-1941) Lasker was a great man... Mathematician... Chess World Champion... A great man... Great. He was born on Christmas Eve, December 24th, 1868, in Brandenburg, Germany. One of my favorite music pieces is Johannes Sebastian Bach's Brandenburg Concertos. Emanuel's older brother, Berthold Lasker, taught Emanuel chess at the age of 11. In 1889 in Breslau, at the age of 21, Emanuel won the German title of Master of Chess. But, most important, it was he that introduced the two-bishop sacrifice . This is the earliest example of that great chess strategy! Only Five years later, in 1894, Lasker challenged Steinitz for the World Chess Championship. Lasker won! He was to remain the World Chess Champion until 1921. The great chess player Steinitz who had been World Champion for 28 years was famous for his introduction of strategy to chess. Lasker is most famous for seeing that chess is a struggle between two minds. In practicing that theorem he smashed Steinitz, Pillsbury and Tchigorin. But before that, Lasker had terrific results. In 1890 in Berlin, he defeated Curt von Bardeleben and Jacques Mieses in a match and he and his brother tied for first place in a tournament as well.

    Introduction
You may know that after: ...White cannot win a pawn with 5. Nxe5 because of 5....Qd4. What you may not know is that White can play this line to win, because in some sense, he is already a pawn up! Let me explain. If you have an extra pawn, you should: exchange off pieces, not pawns create a passed pawn advance the passed pawn and either: - force your opponent to give up material to stop it queening, or - force your way into the opponent's position to take material yourself (usually pawns) With this in mind, let's look at the pawn formation after
Now, if there were only Kings on the board, White could easily create a passed pawn with f4, e5 and f5 and e6. But Black cannot do the same on the other side, unless White allows all the front pawns to come to a4,b4 and c4, when there is a trick with ...b3! e.g. axb3, c3! bxc3 and ...a3. As long as White avoids that trap, the passed pawn on the King's side should win. This is what I mean by already being a pawn up. You have an extra pawn on the King's-side, and Black's extra Queen's-side pawn is useless.

    Must Win!
Comments by: David Hayes Return to Index Emanuel Lasker held the world championship for a record 27 years. He won nearly every tournament he played in during his reign. Furthermore, he played good chess into his late sixties. Despite his skill on 64 squares, he was considered a weak player early in his reign as world champion by many of the leading chess players of that time. Harry Pilsbury, an American, had beaten Lasker in a previous tournament. This fueled the belief that the world champion Lasker could be beaten despite the fact that Lasker's poor performance was more likely due to his recovery at that time from a serious illness. This game was a product of that time. Lasker felt he had to beat his nemisis decisively to prove to the world that he was a worthy holder of the title. Lasker's risky play resulted in a brilliant attack that so shakes Pilsbury that he lost the next four games he played in the St. Petersburg tournament. White: Pilsbury, Harry/unknown
    Black: Lasker, Emanuel/unknown

    Emanuel Lasker
