His doctorate was awarded by Moscow University in 1933. From 1933 he held the chair of Analysis and Theory of Functions at Moscow State University. In 1934 the Steklov Mathematical Institute, together with some other institutions of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR, was moved from Leningrad to Moscow. Lavrentev headed the Department of the Theory of Functions of a Complex Variable at the Steklov Mathematical Institute. From 1939 to 1941 and then again from 1944 to 1949, Lavrentev was the Director of the Institute of Mathematics of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukraine in Kiev. In 1945 he was also appointed vice-president of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukraine. Then, in 1950, he became director of the Institute of Mechanics and Computational Technology of the Ukraine. Lavrentev moved to Novosibirsk when he was vice-president of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR between 1957 snd 1975. During this time he was Head of the Siberian Division of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR. Then, in 1975, Lavrentev returned to Moscow where he worked at the Institute of Physics and Technology until his death.

The results of a social survey show that more than 80% of the residents of Novoskibirsk do not support the cutting of Akademgorodok's forests by the construction that has recently opened. Three thousand residents have already signed a letter demanding the preservation of forests in the center of the Novoskibirsk Science Center (the upper part of the Soviet Rayon of the city of Novosibirsk). Recognizing both the complicated socio-economic situation in Russia, which has produced negative effects likewise on the Novosibirsky Science Center, and the responsibility that lies on the shoulders of the leaders of the Siberian Division of the Russian Academy of Sciences; Sharing the worries of the residents of Akademgorodok, Novosibirsk, and of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in regards to the planned construction project on the territory of Akademgorodok's forested lands;

There are currently students in the eight departments of Novosibirsk State University. Approximately students graduate from both Physics and Mathematics departments of the university every year. About of them have advanced knowledge in computer science. The Historical and Geographical Roots of Akademgorodok In Russian "gorodok" signifies a provincial town, and the capital city usually looks out at the provinces from on high. Akademgorodok, however, is a happy exception to this Russian tradition of the relationship between the center and a far away place. Leading visionaries, outstanding scholars willingly gave up their comfortable homes in Moscow, St. Petersburg, and Kiev for the small Siberian town yet to be built, in order to correct the historical and geographic injustice in the distribution of scientific power and resources. Russia is a huge country, the largest in the world by far, and science has existed in it only at several points. The visionaries took it upon themselves to build Akademgorodok-the Siberian city of science-according to a unique plan. Akademgorodok is 40 kilometers south of Novosibirsk, an industrial center on the Trans-Siberian railroad, with a modern airport nearby.
