Urbain Le Verrier Wow! Le Verrier ipotizzò l'esistenza di una seconda fascia di asteroidi nel Sistema Solare. Credeva che ce ne fosse una fra Mercurio e il Sole. Oggi sappiamo che questa fascia non esiste. Urbain Jean Joseph Le Verrier nacque nel 1811 a Saint-Lô, in Francia. All'età di 26 anni diventò docente di astronomia alla Scuola Politecnica di Parigi. Subito dopo incominciò uno studio intenso del moto di Mercurio. Compilò tavole dettagliate del moto del pianeta, inclusa la sua insolita caratteristica di spostamento del perielio dell'orbita. Nel 1845 Le Verrier si interessò al moto di Urano. L'orbita di Urano non è quella che gli astronomi si aspettavano dai propri calcoli. Le Verrier voleva scoprire il perché. Attraverso calcoli matematici, previde la presenza di un altro pianeta oltre Urano. L'attrazione gravitazionale di questo pianeta avrebbe potuto spiegare l'insolita orbita di Urano. Le Verrier consegnò i suoi calcoli all'astronomo Johann Gottried Galle dell'Osservatorio di Berlino. Usano i calcoli di Le Verrier, Galle riuscì a osservare il pianeta dopo soltanto un'ora di ricerca ! Le Verrier si aspettava di essere riconosciuto come il solo scopritore di Nettuno, ma qualche mese prima che facesse i suoi calcoli, il matematico inglese John Couch Adams aveva ottenuto lo stesso risultato. Di conseguenza Le Verrier e Adams si dividono il merito della scoperta di Nettuno. Nel 1854, Le Verrier diventò direttore dell'Osservatorio di Parigi. A quell'epoca l'osservatorio era in decadenza. Le Verrier riportò l'osservatorio ad un buon livello scientifico, ma spesso dovette usare misure impopolari. Per questo suscitò molte proteste, che portarono alla sua rimozione dall'incarico nel 1870. Diventò nuovamente direttore del 1873. Urbain Le Verrier morì a Parigi nel 1877.

Urbain Jean Joseph Le verrier naît à Saint-Lô le 11 mars 1811. Pendant 8 ans, il se révèle un brillant élève du vieux Collège de la ville. De 1827 à 1830, il étudie principalement les mathématiques au Collège Royal de Caen. L'année suivante, son père accepte de vendre sa maison de saint-Lô pour lui permettre d'aller poursuivre ses études à Paris, au Collège Louis Le Grand. En 1 an, il est admis dans les premiers à l'École Polytechnique dont il sort en 1833 avec un excellent rang. À la surprise de beaucoup, il opte pour l'administration des tabacs et fait son école d'application à la manufacture du Quai d'Orsay. Il se livre là à de nombreux travaux de chimie dans le laboratoire de Gay-Lussac. Passionné de recherche mais obligé de gagner sa vie, il devient répétiteur à l'École Polytechnique où il se spécialise en " mécanique céleste ", activité essentiellement mathématique. En 1839, il présente son premier mémoire d'astronomie à l'Académie des sciences. En 1781, William Herschel avait découvert à travers l'oculaire de son plus récent télescope une planète inconnue du système solaire : Uranus. Pendant un demi-siècle, de nombreux astronomes la suivirent dans le ciel et, à leur grand agacement, ils la trouvaient souvent à côté de la position que leurs calculs les plus précis permettaient de prévoir. Vers 1830, Alexis Bouvard émettait l'idée qu'une planète plus éloignée encore du soleil perturbait le mouvement d'Uranus. Estudió en la Escuela Politécnica de Paris, donde posteriormente fue profesor de astronomía. Fue asimismo catedrático de mecánica celeste de la Facultad de Ciencias de Paris. En 1846, después de estudiar el planeta Urano, concluyó que otro planeta, no descrito hasta el momento, era el responsable, hasta cierto punto, de sus perturbaciones. Ese mismo año, el astrónomo alemán Johann Galle observó el planeta desplazado un grado respecto a los cálculos de Le Verrier. Una predicción similar había sido ya formulada de modo independiente por un joven matemático inglés, John Couch Adams, pero no fue considerada en su momento. El planeta se llamó Neptuno. Le Verrier recibió muchos honores y en 1854 fue nombrado director del Observatorio de París. Perfeccionó las tablas astronómicas del planeta Mercurio, estudió las perturbaciones en los movimientos de los cometas, e investigó los límites en los que varían las excentricidades e inclinaciones de las órbitas planetarias. L LAGRANGE POINTS Lagrange points (named for Josef Lagrange, the Italian-French mathematician who discovered them) are a set of five special points that occur between two large objects. At these points, a small orbiting object can orbit at a constant distance from both of the larger masses. This happens because at those five points, the gravitational force of the large objects is exactly equal to the centripetal force required to rotate with the objects. Three of the points are unstable (L , L , and L ) and two are stable(L and L ). Each of the stable Lagrange points forms an equilateral triangle with the two large masses. LAIKA Laika (meaning "barker" in Russian) was the first dog sent into orbit around the Earth. She rode on Sputnik 2, a Russian mission that blasted off on November 3, 1957 (Sputnik 2 was a metal sphere that weighed about 250 pounds = 113 kg). Laika was originally thought to have survived in Earth orbit for four days, dying in space when the batteries to the cabin over-heated. In 2002, it was revealed that Laika died roughly 5 to 7 hours into the flight, from overheating and stress. After orbiting the Earth 2,570 times, Sputnik 2 fell back to Earth on April 14, 1958, burning up during re-entry. Laika was a female mutt who was part Siberian Husky.
