Updates to Chapter 21, "Cubes Rationalized",
in , by Greg N. Frederickson
Short Biography for John Leech
Mike Drazin, a mathematics professor at Purdue University, wondered why I had not written a short biography of John Leech. Although Leech seems never to have published his 10-piece dissection of a 6-cube into a 3-cube, a 4-cube, and a 5-cube, it was pivotal in stimulating Roger Wheeler to find his 8-piece dissection. Once I thought about it, I had to agree with Mike. So, better late than never: John Leech was born in 1926 in Weybridge, Surrey, England, and died in 1992. He earned a B.A. in mathematics from King's College Cambridge in 1950. His work on two early computer projects led to a computing lectureship at Glasgow University and eventually a chaired professorship in computer science at the University of Stirling, which he held until early retirement in 1980. Leech is best known for his "Leech lattice" which describes a packing of spheres in 24 dimensions. The packing's symmetry group, identified by John Conway (at Leech's instigation), played an important role in the enumeration of finite simple groups. Although Leech's dissection of cubes may well be lost, he did make another contribution to the sums of cubes: He discovered the smallest number, 87539319, that is the sum of two cubes in three different ways. Apparently, he did not identify a small number of pieces that would form either a 167-cube and a 436-cube, or a 228-cube and a 423-cube, or a 255-cube and a 414-cube.

John Leech - 'Mr. Briggs'
Pleasures of Horsekeeping

By the time Mr. Briggs's horse (which suits him exactly) has recovered from his cold, a long frost sets in.
Groom. 'That's just what I say, sir; it is aggeravatin' to see a nice oss like that, sir, a doin' nothin' but eatin' his ed off!'
The Frost goes and Mr. Briggs's horse is disagreeably fresh after his long rest. He sets up his back and squeaks, and plunges at everything he meets.
Mr. Briggs, not being good at his 'fences', goes through the performance of opening a gate.
Mr. Briggs has another day with the hounds.
Mr. Briggs can't bear flying leaps, so he makes for a gap - which is immediately filled by a franctic protectionist, who is vowing that he will pitchfork Mr. Briggs if he comes 'galloperravering' over his fences - danged if he doant !
Mr. Briggs has gone to the exhibition. - A Boy holds his horse in the meantime.
(in speechbaloons) ' Come, you get off you've had your turn' - 'Go along Irish. I shan't ! Why, I aint galloped im yet' Mr. Briggs starts on his fishing excursion.

History of the 19th Century in Political Cartoons
Chapter XI
From Cruikshank to Leech
The Duke of Wellington I n contrast with the brilliancy of the French artists, the work in England during these years, at least prior to the establishment of Punch, After Cruikshank, until the advent of the men who made Punch portrayal of Wellington buried up to his neck in his own boot one of the universal Wellington boots of the period. The cartoonist's thought, quite obviously, was that the illustrious hero of Waterloo had won his fame primarily in boots and spurs, and that as a statesman he became a very much shrunken and insignificant figure. In its underlying thought this cartoon suggests comparison with the familiar "Grandpa's Hat" cartoons of the recent Harrison administration. Very rarely Heath broke away from home politics and touched upon international questions of the day. A print showing the Premier engaged in the task of "making a rushlight," which he is just withdrawing cautiously from a large tub labeled "Greece," is an allusion to the part played by Great Britain in helping to add the modest light of Greek independence to the general illumination of civilized Europe.

Punch and the 19th Century London Stage
Biographical Notes on John Leech
John Leech (1817-1864) was the leading artist and caricaturist for Punch from its inception until his death . Born in London, his talent for drawing is recorded at an early age. "At sixteen, after nine years of "Grey Friars," he began, by his father's desire, to study medicine at St. Bartholomew's." This may very well have been his most significant career move. For it was in medical school that he made the acquaintance of Gilbert `a Beckett , Pervical Leigh and Albert Smith, "all of whom were subsequently to earn distinction with the pen rather than the scalpel" ( DNB Leech honed his artistic talent in anatomical drawing. Due to financial failings of his father, Leech "relinguished medicine, [and] turned to art [for] his livelihood" ( DNB 830). Before finding an artistic home at Punch, Leech illustrated the Pickwick Papers London Magazine, Charivari and Courrier des Dames , and Bentley's Miscellany . In the 1830s and 40s he also collaborated on a variety of caricatures with his friend Percival Leigh. Even while working for Punch, he continued to illustrate for other London journals and publications, chief among them `a Beckett's Comic History of England The DNB points out that Leech's "pictorial activity" spans the middle of the century and that we can place the artist historically between Cruikshank and Du Maurier (831). It praises him for his bringing humorous art up-market: "His humour is to the full as keen, his sense of fun as marked; but it is less grotesque, less boisterous, less exaggerated, nearer to truth and ordinary experience," we are told (831).

John Leech's Illustrations of A Christmas Carol (1843) Reading and Discussion Questions
Philip V. Allingham , Contributing Editor, Victorian Web; Faculty of Education, Lakehead University (Canada)
John Leech (1817-1864), the English magazine caricaturist, was a Londoner of Irish descent, the son of a coffee-house proprietor. Educated at Charterhouse with W. M. Thackeray , Leech enjoyed a life-long friendship with that novelist (near whom he lies buried at Kensall Green, London), but is more commonly associated with Thackeray's rival, Charles Dickens. Leech early on in his life abandoned the study of medicine for that of art, publishing Etchings and Sketchings by A. Pen, Esq. (1835) when he was just eighteen. From 1841 he contributed hundreds of sketches of middle-class life and political cartoons to the magazines Punch , the Illustrated London News , and Once a Week , lauded by late-Victorian illustrator George Du Maurier as one of the most significant and influential illustrated periodicals. Compare Plate Five with pp. 86-87 of the Penguin A Christmas Carol . Most noteworthy in the collaborative relationship between Dickens and Leech are the latter's eight plates (four of them hand-coloured) for A Christmas Carol , published on 17 December 1843, although Leech was also the chief illustrator for the other four Christmas Books, which are now largely forgotten. Particularly interesting is Leech's illustration of "The Ghost of Christmas Present" (Penguin, p. 88), complementing the text (pp. 86-87).
