EU Enlargement and Transatlantic Relations
Edited by John Leech
* Timely and substantial analysis of the implications of the enlargement of the European Community on its relationship with the United States * Reflects recent (post 9/11) security concerns from the European and American sides * Contributions from world experts, including researchers at The Brookings Institution and the Center for Strategic and International Studies (Washington DC) These essays evaluate the impact of current and future EU enlargement on transatlantic relations, assess the effects of political, economic, strategic and global changes on relations between the US and a European Union of possibly 25-30 members, and formulate appropriate policy options. Throughout there are two recurring themes. First, that the EU's prolonged integration process has burdened it with an accretion of legal texts whose combined weight threatens its own governance. And secondly, that while the direct effects of enlargement on transatlantic terms of trade, investment and business activity are likely to be small, the political outcomes will carry much greater importance. William John Leech (1881-1968) was reclusive in his lifetime, but his attractive landscapes, portraits and still-lifes, in oil and watercolour, have long been collected. This catalogue, of the 1996 exhibition by Denise Ferran, is the fruit of many years research and brings together over a hundred works. Leech was initially attracted by the tonal painting of Whistler, but, in Brittany, developed a vibrant post-modernist palette and distinctive brushwork which sustained him for a long career.

John Leech's Pictures of Life and Character
by William Makepeace Thackeray
Cheerful relatives used to treat us to Miss Linwood's. Let the children of the present generation thank their stars That tragedy is put out of their way. Miss Linwood's was worsted-work. Your grandmother or grandaunts took you there and said the pictures were admirable. You saw "the Woodman" in worsted, with his axe and dog, trampling through the snow; the snow bitter cold to look at, the woodman's pipe wonderful: a gloomy piece, that made you shudder. There were large dingy pictures of woollen martyrs, and scowling warriors with limbs strongly knitted; there was especially, at the end of a black passage, a den of lions, that would frighten any boy not born in Africa, or Exeter 'Change, and accustomed to them. Another exhibition used to be West's Gallery, where the pleasing figures of Lazarus in his grave-clothes, and Death on the pale horse, used to impress us children. The tombs of Westminster Abbey, the vaults at St. Paul's, the men in armor at the Tower, frowning ferociously out of their helmets, and wielding their dreadful swords; that superhuman Queen Elizabeth at the end of the room, a livid sovereign with glass eyes, a ruff, and a dirty satin petticoat, riding a horse covered with steel: who does not remember these sights in London in the consulship of Plancus? and the wax- work in Fleet Street, not like that of Madame Tussaud's, whose chamber of death is gay and brilliant; but a nice old gloomy wax- work, full of murderers; and as a chief attraction, the Dead Baby and the Princess Charlotte lying in state?

John, I just wanted to let you know my father and I thoroughly enjoyed our guide trip a couple weeks ago. Neither of us thought you could match the first trip we took with you, but you managed to put us on more HUGE fish than we did the first trip. We kept track of our catches and determined we caught over 65 fish in two days weighing anywhere from 2 lb - 9 lbs. Still no 10 pounder, but I am sure we'll get another chance. Don't forget the 6 foot gar fish we had hooked - that was the biggest fish I have ever seen. Attached is a bunch of pictures we took - some of them didn't turn out as well as I had hoped, but still some good memories. Keep in mind that Image015 [top right] contains 2 fish I caught - dad just happened to be holding the big one. Can't wait to toss a line with you again. If you are ever traveling through Kentucky, or have a tournament up this way, give us a call. Scott Buchanan
Williamstown, KY Dear John, Just a brief note to wish you a happy Thanksgiving. Hope you are keeping well and fishing a lot. I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for the excellent service you provided my son and myself. We had a wonderful day.
