Adrien-Marie Legendre
From 1775 to 1780 he taught with Laplace at Ecole Militaire. He then decided to enter for the 1782 prize on projectiles offered by the Berlin Academy. His essay won the prize and launched Legendre on his research career, as he came to the notice of Lagrange, then Director of Mathematics at the Academy in Berlin. Over the next few years Legendre published work in a number of areas. In particular he published papers on celestial mechanics which contain the Legendre polynomials. He also published papers on number theory and the theory of elliptic functions. A 1785 paper on number theory contains a number of important results, such as the law of quadratic reciprocity for residues, and the results that every arithmetic series with the first term coprime to the common difference contains an infinite number of primes. In 1794, Legendre published , which was the leading elementary text on the topic for around 100 years. This text greatly rearranged and simplified many of the propositions from Euclid's Elements to create a more effective textbook.

Legendre's major work on elliptic integrals provided basic analytical tools for mathematical physics. Laplace d'Alembert In 1782 Legendre determined the attractive force for certain solids of revolution by introducing an infinite series of polynomials Pn which are now called Legendre polynomials. His major work on elliptic functions in (1811,1817,1819) and elliptic integrals in (1825,1826,1830) provided basic analytical tools for mathematical physics. In his famous textbook (1794 )he gave a simple proof that is irrational as well as the first proof that is irrational and conjectured that is not the root of any algebraic equation of finite degree with rational coefficients i.e. is not algebraic. His attempt to prove the parallel postulate extended over 40 years. In 1824 Legendre refused to vote for the government's candidate for Institut National. Because of this his pension was stopped and he died in poverty.

Adrien-Marie Legendre would perhaps have disliked the fact that this article contains details of his life for Poisson wrote of him in [12]:- Our colleague has often expressed the desire that, in speaking of him, it would only be the matter of his works, which are, in fact, his entire life. From 1775 to 1780 he taught with Laplace at Ecole Militaire where his appointment was made on the advice of d'Alembert . He then decided to enter for the 1782 prize on projectiles offered by the Berlin Academy. The actual task was stated as follows:- Determine the curve described by cannonballs and bombs, taking into consideration the resistance of the air; give rules for obtaining the ranges corresponding to different initial velocities and to different angles of projection. His essay won the prize and launched Legendre on his research career. In 1782

In truth, Messrs Euler and Lagrange, who have not distained this kind of research, have proved most of these theorems, and have even substituted extensive theories for the isolated propositions of Fermat. Noi I-am dat locul de nastere la Paris, dar acolo sunt cateva dovezi ce sugereaza ca s-a nascut in Toulouse si familia sa s-a mutat la Paris cand era foarte tanar. Cu certitudine el provine dintr-o familie bogata si I s-a dat eduacatie buna la matematica si fizica la Colegiul Mazarin din Paris. In 1770, la varsta de 18 ani, Legendre si-a dat teza in matematica si fizica la Colegiul Mazarin, dar aceasta nu a fost sfarsitul marii realizari folosite tot timpul pentru aceasta considera mai mult planul descoperirii atunci cad si-a completat tezele. In teze a enumerat ceea ce va studia si rezultate pe care va dori sa le dovedeasca. Fara a avea nevoie de a se angaja sa se ajute , insusi Legendre traia in Paris si se concentra pe crecetare. Intre 1775 si 1780 a predat cu Laplace la Scoala Militara, unde si-a luat angajamentul sa-i dea sfaturi lui d’Albert. Atunci a decis sa intre pentru premiul 1872 in proiectul oferit de Academia din Berlin. Actuala sarcina era stabilita in urmatoarele: Determinand curbele descrise de proiectile si bombe, luand in considerare rezistenta aerului, dand reguli pentru aranjarea corespondentei inter diferenta traiectoriei initiale si diferenta proiectiei finale.

    Mort el 10 de gener de 1833 a Paris, França Collège Mazarin a Paris. En els 18 anys Legendre va defensar la seva tesis en matemàtiques i física al Collège Mazarin Ecole Militaire El seu treball Recherches sur la trajectoire de projectiles dans les milieux résistants recherches sur la figure des planètes (1784)), teoria de nombres( (1785)), teoria sobre funcions el·líptiques(treball sobre integrals el·líptiques(1786)) Royal Observatory at Greenwich . Per els treball fet amb aquest observatori fou elegit membre de la Royal Society of London i va desemboca en la publicació de Mémoire sur les opérations trigonométriques dont les résultats dépendent de la figure de la terre que conté el teorema de Legendre sobre triangles esfèrics. El 1791 Legendre es va convertir a membre del comitè de pesos i mesures. Quan la acadèmia va ser tancada al 1793 Legendre va tenir dificultats perquè va perdre el capital que li proporcionava una vida còmoda. El 1794 publica Éléments de Géometrie que va ser el manual elemental sobre aquesta matèria durant uns cent anys.

    Adrien-Marie Legendre would perhaps have disliked the fact that this article contains details of his life for Poisson wrote of him in [12]:- Our colleague has often expressed the desire that, in speaking of him, it would only be the matter of his works, which are, in fact, his entire life. From 1775 to 1780 he taught with Laplace at Ecole Militaire where his appointment was made on the advice of d'Alembert . He then decided to enter for the 1782 prize on projectiles offered by the Berlin Academy. The actual task was stated as follows:- Determine the curve described by cannonballs and bombs, taking into consideration the resistance of the air; give rules for obtaining the ranges corresponding to different initial velocities and to different angles of projection. His essay won the prize and launched Legendre on his research career. In 1782
