He published a classic work on geometry He also made significant contributions in differential equations calculus function theory, number theory (1797-98), and applied math. He expanded his three-volume treatise (1811-19) into another three volume work, (1825-32). Legendre reduced elliptic integrals to three standard forms, but their straightforward inversion by Abel and Jacobi rendered his work unnecessary. He invented the Legendre polynomials in 1784 while studying the attraction of spheroids His work was important for geodesy. In number theory he proved the unsolvability of Fermat's last theorem for n

Legendre, Adrien-Marie (17521833) Legendre received an education in mathematics that was unusually advanced for the Paris schools in the eighteenth century. He was fortunate that his primary mathematics teacher was the Abbé Joseph-François Marie, who was a master teacher. Legendre was a quick student and graduated at a young age. Soon thereafter, he was teaching mathematics at the École polytechnique In 1782 Legendre won a research prize from the Berlin Academy. The subject of the competition that year concerned exterior ballistics: "Determine the curve described by cannonballs and bombs, taking into consideration the resistance of the air, and give rules for obtaining the ranges corresponding to different initial velocities." Legendre was able to develop these equations from his advanced work in differential equations Legendre encountered and developed polynomials, today named for him, in his research on the gravitational attraction of ellipsoids. He devoted 40 years to this research to elliptic integrals.

Legendre, Adrien-Marie
French mathematician who was particularly interested in number theory, celestial mechanics, and elliptic functions.
In 1783-84 he introduced to celestial mechanics what are now known as Legendre polynomials. These are solutions to a second-order differential equation.
In number theory his most significant result was the law of reciprocity of quadratic residues (established more firmly by German mathematician Karl Gauss 1801) and the law of the distribution of prime numbers 1798.

Legendre symbol
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. The Legendre symbol is used by mathematicians in the theory of numbers , particularly in the fields of factorization and quadratic residues . It is named after the French mathematician Adrien-Marie Legendre If p is a prime number and a is an integer relatively prime to p , then we define the Legendre symbol ( a/p ) to be:
  • 1 if a is a square modulo p (that is to say there exists an integer x such that x a mod p -1 if a is not a square modulo p
Furthermore, if a is divisible by p we define ( a/p Euler proved that if p is an odd prime. (We have ( a/2 ) = 1 for all odd numbers a and ( a/2 ) = for all even numbers a Thus we can see that the Legendre symbol is completely multiplicative , i.e. (
