Philosophy Department - Univeristy of Guelph John Leslie
M.Litt. (Oxford), F.R.S.C. johnlesl@uoguelph.ca Download my current CV Bio: Joining the Philosophy Department in 1968, I took early retirement in 1996 to have more time for research and writing. I have held visiting posts at the University of Calgary (Dept. of Religious Studies), the Australian National University (Research School of Philosophy), and the University of Liège (Institute of Astrophysics). I was appointed the British AcademyRoyal Society of Canada Exchange Lecturer for 1998. Interests: Metaphysics, with emphasis on the nature of causation, of time, of the mind, and of the world's unity. Philosophy of Religion, emphasizing (1) the neoplatonist idea that God, instead of being an omnipotent creator, is a need for the world to exist, a need which is itself creatively effective; and (2) the spinozistic notion that the world is just the thoughts of a divine mind. Philosophy of Cosmology, particularly the suggestion that there exist many universes, ours being one of the rare ones in which intelligent living beings can evolve. Ethics, particularly the duty to prevent the extinction of the human race. Analysis of Risks. Probability Theory. Decision Theory. Other interests: Rock climbing; board games, particularly "Hostage Chess" (see below); family life; the oriental board game "Go".

Harold Lester, Harpsichord

John Blow (1649-1708): A Voluntary for the Cornett Stop
Recorded in St. Mary's Church, Rotherhithe, London.
Organ by John Byfield 1764.
1. Concerto No 2 in b minor for Organ and Strings
Largo-Adagio - Allegro - Adagio-Allegro moderato - Adagio-Allegro – Allegro
2. Concerto No 4 in d minor for Strings, with harpsichord continuo
Adagio - Allegro - Andante – Allegro

3. Concerto No 5 in A Major for Harpsichord and Strings Largo-Allegro - Adagio - Allegro - Allegro moderato 4. Concerto No 1 in D Major for Strings with organ continuo Largo - Allegro-Adagio-Allegro - Allegro - Adagio - Allegro 5. Concerto No 6 in B flat Major for Harpsichord and Strings Adagio-Allegro - Largo - Allegro 6. Concerto No 3 in G Major for Organ and Strings Adagio-Allegro - Andante - Allegro 7. John Blow (1649-1708): A Voluntary for the Cornett Stop Total time 61:04 If you haven't heard these Concertos before – don't hesitate! Composed between 1742 and 1745 they are varied, tuneful, frequently contrapuntal, grand in the Handelian manner – and very baroque. Highly enjoyable and entertaining from start to finish. If you have heard them before, then you probably heard them in one of the versions for string orchestra – all six performed all on one sound and textural level as Six Concertos for Strings. The present recording takes a different approach. These concertos were entitled "For Strings and Continuo, or Keyboard and Continuo", and we took John Stanley at his word! In fact, when preparing the scores, conductor Leslie Jones found that some are more suited to Strings, some to Keyboard. In the end, conductor and producer settled on the following: two concertos as Organ with strings, two as Harpsichord with strings, and two for Strings, one with harpsichord continuo, the other with organ continuo.

Cosmology and Theology
Philosophers, too, have doubted that so remarkable a person would be needed to explain such affairs, or that this person's own existence could be any less in need of explanation. They may here conceive God in a way not everybody would accept, interactions between cosmology and theology often depending on which picture of God is preferred. Such interactions include discussions of the nature of time and of the human mind, and of whether intelligent life is widespread in the cosmos.
Why is there a Cosmos?
People disagree over whether the sheer existence of the cosmos could call for explanation. Some have held that it always would, no matter how long the cosmos had existed; others that it never would; and still others that this would depend on whether the cosmos had existed eternally, or else on the nature of time. It is nowadays usually believed that our universe came out of a Big Bang, a violent explosion occurring perhaps fifteen billion years ago. Thinking that the Bang could be explained only by God, the atheistic Hoyle (1950) preferred a universe existing eternally in a Steady State: it expanded, but new hydrogen atoms constantly materialized to keep the average cosmic density the same. Although at first offering no explanation for the new atoms, he thought them much less of a difficulty than the materialization of everything at once. Among theists, Pius XII (1952) then agreed that a Bang could indeed be counted as specially strong evidence of God's creative activity, yet many theologians protested that this activity should not be particularly associated with any first moment of a universe's existence. Tables, for instance, would vanish immediately if God failed to "conserve" their existence through exercise of his creative power.

Detail of Name Board
John HILLS was a pianoforte manufacturer in the Southwark (Obelisk; St George) and Kennington areas of London from around 1805 until his death in 1831. The business was then run by his wife, Ann HILLS nee AGG, with assistance from her eighteen year old son, William. He eventually took charge and ran the business until around 1845, when it closed. William (1813-1894) then took to teaching music, styling himself, in the manner of the day, 'Professor of Music', as did his older brother, great-great-grandfather John HILLS (1808-1870), who married his first cousin Caroline Haynes in 1846, following the death of his first wife.
We are keen to find descendants of William HILLS and Elizabeth CHERRY who was born c 1840. Children were : Margaret born c1865 [married Wardle], Noel c 1868, Frank c 1870, and Frederick Herbert "Bertie" HILLS 1873. Living members of this family were all in Essex in both the 1881 and 1901 censuses. William Hills died at Bishop's Stortford in 1894; his wife Elizabeth HILLS nee Cherry, one of the first female graduates from the University of London, was listed as a schoolmistress, living in Ilford, aged 61, in the 1901 census.
Also seeking descendants of John and Caroline HILLS son (William's nephew), John Leslie HILLS (born 26th September 1847) and his wife Edith Maria Tillson. Children were : William born c1870 [went to Canada], Jack c1873, Frank c1874, Lily HILLS c1878, Maud c1880 [married MAY] and Harry HILLS born after 1881.

For this work he was awarded the 1991 Grawemeyer Award music's Nobel Prize as well as two Grammy Awards for "Best Contemporary Composition of 1991" and "Best Orchestral Performance of the Year." In 1991, Corigliano was elected to the American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters. William Shakespeare
Shakespeare's Sonnets
Sir John Gielgud reads the sonnets of William Shakespeare. These sonnets were probably composed between 1593 and 1601, but were not published until 1609. Some of the poems are addressed to a young friend, who may have been the Earl of Southampton. Others praise the beauty of a mysterious "dark lady" who has not been identified. This reading is accompanied by music performed by the Elizabethan Consort of Viols and the Taylor Consort of Recorders, Leslie Pearson, Conductor.
"Much Ado About Nothing"
We present excerpts from Shakespeare's playful, stylish "Much Ado About Nothing," which brings together Beatrice and Benedick, one of the most famous duos ever invented for the stage. This 1963 performance features Rex Harrison and Rachel Roberts who bring new life to this sophisticated comedy of manners on the subject of marriage and marital bondage.
