Octav Onicescu
Our first doctor in mathematics with the doctorate thesis in Italy appeared rather late, only in 1920. This mathematician was Octav Onicescu. Octav Onicescu is the first Romanian with the doctorate in mathematics in Rome, with the qualification "magna cum laude" in front of a commission of 11 university professors, chaired by Levi-Civita. Octav Onicescu was born on August 20, 1892 in Botosani, the town where was born and where learned the great Nicolae Iorga and close to which, at Ipotesti, was born and lived Mihai Eminescu. Onicescu was the son of Vlad Onicescu, from Stefanesti-Botosani, but his ancestors, on his father's side, come from Oniceni-Roman, Bacau county. The mother of Octav Onicescu, Ana, was from Bucovina, of Macedonean origin. His father was state official. He attended the elementary school in Botosani and also here he attended the high school "August Treboniu Laurian", one of the good, old high schools of the country, established in 1858. In this high school, which he graduated with the average grade of 10, he showed a particular interest for mathematics and philosophy. In 1911, Onicescu became student at the Bucharest University, Faculty of sciences, attending at the time the Faculty of philosophy. In 1913, after just two years of study, he took his licence in mathematics and the licence in philosophy. From 1914 to 1916 he was professor of mathematics at the military high school. During 1916-1918 he participated in the first World War.
