Bral je originalne spise Solomona ibn Gabirola, Abrahama ben Meir ibn Ezra, Mojzesa ben Majmona (Majmonida), Levija ben Gersona (Gresonida), Hasdaia Crescasa, Jehude Abrabenela (Leona Ebreo).

Have even a slight encounter with American theater and music, American literature and art, and you will notice a Semitic presence out of proportion to our small numbers. But also be aware of the strong interactive relationship between the general, secular society and our particularist one. Only by emphasizing our distinctive religious faith, more than either practice or doctrine, will our Judaism remain viable. Whitfield's thesis: We must consciously maintain our "otherness" in the face of rampant assimilation to keep American Jewish culture Jewish. This Month's Notable Books
Since we are focusing on past and present cultures this month, we want to call your attention to a book about a frequently overlooked period of Jewish history. In Abraham's Heirs: Jews and Christians in Medieval Europe, (Syracuse) Leonard B. Glick

Euthanasia No. 11 (YD 339:1)
Source: LGA, Box 4, "Ginsburg" file
Excerpt (almost complete): Keeper , pp. 239-241 January 8, 1936 Dear Doctor Ginsburg: Complying with your request, I shall put down in writing the statement I made to you orally with regard to the attitude of Jewish law and practice towards euthanasia. The earliest Jewish authority who discusses this problem directly and explicitly is Rabbi Judah of Regensburg, Bavaria (died 1217), who, in his work The Book of the Pious It is true Saul was justified in committing suicide (this is stated in as early a source as Genesis Rabbah 34:13); the honor of Israel required that its first King should not permit himself to be captured alive. But the Amalakite had no justification for hastening the King's death, and since shortening human life, even for a few moments, is punishable by death, he suffered by the hands of David the punishment he deserved. The correctness of the explanations given by our author for the justifiable suicide of Saul and for the [punishment by death] of the Amalakite is open to serious doubt and, as a matter of fact, there are several different explanations to be found in Rabbinic literature. I shall only mention the view of the famous philosopher and astronomer, Rabbi Levi Ben Gerson - usually called by the scholastics "Maestre Leo de Bagnols" - according to which David was solely motivated by his desire to uphold the newly established institution of monarchy in Israel (compare his commentary to II Samuel 1:14). Be that as it may, the author of the

    1. Greeks and Hebrews: two intertwining intellectual progressions In very broad lines, Western culture is the outcome of two independent intellectual progressions: Greek philosophy and science, centered on a rational understanding of the world - and Hebrew ethics, worrying about the condition of man and his interaction with other men. On the Greek side, we note that at the beginning of the first Century AD, Eratosthenes (250 BC) had already computed the diameter of the earth with an error of less than 1/2 %, Hipparchus (150 BC) had evaluated the distance to the Moon with a 1/3 % precision, Hero (100 BC) had invented the steam engine [1]. On the Jewish side, Abraham (1800 BC) had put an end to human sacrifice, Moses (1300 BC) had codified the day of rest, to be applied even to slaves and house animals, Amos (800 BC) had preached social justice and Isaiah (700 BC) had already conceived the idea of universal peace - in a world where war remained the explicit ideal "manly" activity for another thousand years [2]. Note that in this ethical voyage of discovery, Jewish society had evolved "schools" as early as 1000 BC [3], the earliest foundations of what was later to become a learning-oriented culture. In parallel, we have, of course, the Athens Academy ( ~ 500 BC). With the destruction of the Second Temple (70 AD), the Jewish cult and rites centre on learning much more than before. Judaism, as remodeled for a countryless nation by Yokhanan Ben Zakkay (Ist Century AD) became a study-oriented religion. Note that 1000 years later, in medieval Europe, all male Jews were literate, at a time when in most of Europe, only churchmen could read.

75. Jacob's Staff
The original Jacob's staff, or crossstaff, was a single pole device credited tolevi ben gerson (1288-1344), who was one of the leading Jewish mathematicians
http://www.surveyhistory.org/jacob's_staff.htm
Article taken from "Backsights" Magazine published by Surveyors Historical Society When you hear the term Jacob (or Jacob's) staff, you probably have a mental image of a single pole used to support a compass. However, the original Jacob's staff was actually a surveying instrument developed in the 1300's that was used in making nautical and astronomical measurements. The original Jacob's staff, or cross-staff, was a single pole device credited to Levi ben Gerson (1288-1344), who was one of the leading Jewish mathematicians of the 14th century. The pole was marked in degrees, and the altitude of the stars could be determined by using a sliding wooden panel on the rod. The American version of the Jacob's staff seems to have only borrowed the name. Its function, as we know it, was to provide support for the compass. In a manufacturer's catalog from the 1880's, the surveyor's compass is described as being fitted to a slightly conical spindle with a spherical ball on its lower end. The ball is confined in a socket by pressure so slight that the ball can be moved in any direction in the operation of levelling the compass. The spindle and the ball-and-socket are part of the brass head of the Jacob staff. The brass head and a shoe, pointed with steel, were the mountings that we sold to make up the Jacob's staff.
