Sophus Lie Nordfjordeide 17.12.1842 - Oslo 18.2.1899 Figlio di un pastore norvegese, studia le materie scientifiche e nel 1868 nasce il suo forte interesse per la matematica. E' a Berlino e a Parigi e volendo recarsi a piedi in Italia, allo scoppio del conflitto franco-prussiano, viene scambiato per una spia ed arrestato a Fontainebleau; dopo quattro settimane viene liberato per intervento dei matematici francesi. Nel 1872 si laurea a Cristiania e viene nominato professore; un suo allievo, G.Kowalewsky, lo descrive come uomo dall'aspetto massiccio ed imponente, che non portava mai cravatta, ma al suo posto una fluente barba, e che, all'inizio della lezione, si liberava immediatamente del colletto inamidato. Fra le sue opere ricordiamo l'introduzione dei gruppi di trasformazione che portano il suo nome, che hanno creato un importantissimo nuovo strumento per il collegamento di molti rami della matematica e della fisica moderna.

..tilbake Sophus Lies vei Sted: Skinnarberga Sophus Lie var prestesønn, født i Eid i Nordfjord den 17. desember 1842. Da Sophus var 9 år gammel flyttet familien til Moss. Sophus var jevnt flink i alle fag på skolen og hadde som student lyst til å gå videre både innen språk og realfag. Han valgte realfag og kom etterhvert innom de fleste områder innen emnet, fra zoologi til astronomi. Mens han studerte ved universitetet arbeidet han ganske intenst med matematikk, noe en kan se av hans utlånsprotokoller. Det var en nyorientering innen geometrien på den tiden, bort fra den to- og tredimensjonale rammen som hadde vært enerådende og mer over i abstraksjon. Dette passet godt for Sophus Lie's sterkt geometriske fantasi og skaperevne. Han leverte sin første matematiske avhandling til Vitenskapsakademiet, “Repräsentation der Imaginären der Plangeometrie”, da han var 26 år gammel. Arbeidet skulle vurderes, professor Bjerknes holdt på i en måned og professor Broch i to dager, før de ga opp å forstå noe av det hele. Men de skjønte verdien av arbeidet og sørget for at Lie fikk et stipendium slik at han kunne studere videre i Berlin og Paris. I Berlin fikk han lagt fram sine tanker og ideer for verdens ledende fagmiljø. Hans arbeide vakte interesse og han ble inspirert til å fortsette.
