Sir James Lighthill's contributions to Biological Fluid Dynamics Lighthill's next foray into biology (1960), written while he was Director of the Royal Aircraft Establishment, Farnborough, set out the principal features of what has become the standard model of fish swimming, at least for those species that do not generate thrust by means of lift forces on a laterally oscillating (lunate) tail, without significant body undulation. This small-amplitude, slender- (or elongated- ) body theory explains how thrust is generated from the reactive (added-mass) forces experienced by an undulating body as it gives sideways acceleration to fluid which is moving backwards relative to the fish at the approximately steady swimming speed. The theory also shows, using an energy argument, that the mean thrust can be calculated from the displacement and slope of the fish centre-surface at the trailing edge alone, which significantly reduces the amount of observational data required to test the model. In that early, inviscid model, Lighthill also showed a full appreciation of the difficulties involved with calculating recoil (stemming from the fact that an arbitrary displacement wave will not in general give rise to instantaneous forces and couples that exactly balance the fish's transverse and angular momentum) and with analysing the three-dimensional boundary layer , needed to check whether the computed thrust does indeed balance the drag at the supposed swimming speed.

sir james lighthill FRS. james lighthill was acknowledged throughout theworld as one of the great mathematical scientists of this century.
http://www.damtp.cam.ac.uk/user/imammb/lighthll.htm
Sir James Lighthill FRS In one of his most celebrated works, his first paper on `Sound generated aerodynamically´, by jet aircraft and the like, he developed the essential mathematical structure completely in two weeks, but felt that the users (aeroengine designers) would not be able to grasp the implications, and so he delayed submission of his manuscript for sixteen months, in which time he worked backwards from the conclusions, isolating the meaning at each stage – and refining and simplifying the mathematics as he did so. He was in no sense simply the deployer of existing mathematics against a rich range of practical problems. To be sure, his earliest papers on supersonic flight already showed brilliant mastery and exploitation of classical techniques. But much more powerful techniques were needed for problems such as those of how waves in fluids are generated and propagated, and for this Lighthill made great developments in the theory of Fourier analysis, generalized functions and asymptotics – all set out with elegance and economy, and full rigour, in a delightful 1958 book. Rather different ideas were needed for nonlinear problems, such as the propagation and focusing of sonic booms, and here Lighthill provided equally original and elegant new techniques, permanent and frequently-used additions to the armoury. It had immediate implication for noise reduction in jet aeroengines, motivating the trend begun later in the 1950s and still continuing, to engines with higher bypass ratio, greater diameter and lower exhaust speed, as mandated by Lighthill’s famous eighth power law for jet noise. Remarkably, the Lighthill theory was sufficiently versatile for it to be applied also to problems as diverse as the heating of the sun’s corona and the noise heard under water due to breaking surface waves and splashing drops.

INTERNATIONAL WORKSHOP
on 4-7 January, 2000 Haifa, Israel
This event will be combined with the Annual Meeting of the Israeli Society for Theoretical and Mathematical Biology, which will take place on Wednesday, 5 January, 2000. The workshop is in memory of Sir James Lighthill, an outstanding scientist, who was one of the giants of the twentieth century in fluid mechanics and other topics, and created the field of Biofluiddynamics. Sir James passed away last year in his usual flamboyant style, swimming around an island in the British Channel. Some world renowned experts in the field are invited to present their work and give special tutorials. The workshop will provide a common stage for the exchange of ideas between specialists from different aspects of Biofluiddynamics, namely high and low Reynolds numbers. The workshop will be an excellent opportunity for researchers in the field to present their work, and for graduate students and postdocs to learn about new advances in the field as well as about research problems that still need to be pursued. We expect this gathering to be of benefit to such young scientists. We plan to invite and give partial support to several young Israeli scientists, as well as several young scientists from abroad. List of speakers includes : Eshel Ben-Jacob (Tel Aviv), John Blake (Birmingham), Jacob J. Blum (Duke), Alex Braiman (Ben Gurion University), Charles Brokaw (Caltech), Colin Caro (Imperial College), Shay Gueron (Haifa), Mimi Koehl (Berkeley), Nadav Liron (Technion), Stefan Mayer (Denmark), Belinda Orme (Birmingham), Zvi Priel (Ben Gurion University), Jeremy Rayner (Bristol), Sabine Stoecker (Torino), Shegeru Sunada (Tsukubu), Daniel Weihs (Technion), Theodore Y. The death occured in July of James Lighthill who was President of ICMI from 1971 to 1975. Lighthill was one of the leading applied mathematicians of the century and a phenomenally gifted person. After taking a two-year B.A. at Cambridge during World War II, Lighthill went to work at a government scientific laboratory. Shortly after the war ended he moved to Manchester University where, in his early twenties and without a research degree, he was immediately appointed as a Senior Lecturer. In 1950, at the age of 26, he became Professor! In his 30s he left university work to be Director of the Royal Aircraft Establishment, Farnborough and after a succesful period there returned to academic life in the 1960s. He later held Newton's old chair at Cambridge before becoming Provost (Rector) of University College, London. Lighthill's contributions to mathematics education were mainly made in the 1960s and 1970s. He was on several important committees in England and in addition to being President of ICMI at the time of the second International Congress on Mathematics Education (Exeter, England, 1972) he was also Chairman of its Organising Commit-tee. Several seminars were supported by ICMI during his term of office, the most important probably being that, held jointly with UNESCO, at Nairobi, Kenya (1974) on "Mathematics and Language". Lighthill also gave the opening plenary talk at ICME 3 (Karlsruhe, Germany).
