Šlo o práci týkající se odrazuA lomu svìtla z hlediska Maxwellovy teorie, jež pøeznamenala jeho celoživotní zamìøení. Narozdíl od Maxwella však záhy dospìl k názoru, že k popisu elektrických, magnetických a optických jevù samotná koncepce pole nestaèí, ale že je tøeba pøihlížet i k elektrickýcm vlastnostem látky, tvoøené elektrony. V práci z roku 1892 je dán nový obsah Maxwellovým rovnicím, pøièemž vektory elektrického posunutí a magnetické indukce mají mikroskopický, statistický význam. K tìmto Maxwellovým-Lorentzovým rovnicím pøistupuje nový fundamentální vztah pro tzv. Lorentzovu sílu, které podléhá elektrický náboj v elektromagnetickém poli. Jestliže se èástice s nábojem pohybuje souènì v elektrickém a magnetickém poli, pùsobí na ni jak síla elektrická F e , tak síla magnetická F m . Výslednice obou sil je Lorentzova síla F l F e F m Pro magnetickou sílu platí F m = Bev a pro elektrickou sílu F e = eE.

Hendrik Lorentz attended primary school in Arnhem until he was 13 years of age when he entered the new High School there. He entered the University of Leiden in 1870 but, in 1872, he returned to Arnhem to take up teaching evening classes. He worked for his doctorate while holding the teaching post. Lorentz refined Maxwell 's electromagnetic theory in his doctoral thesis The theory of the reflection and refraction of light presented in 1875. He was appointed professor of mathematical physics at Leiden University in 1878. He remained in this post until he retired in 1912 when Ehrenfest was appointed to his chair. After retiring from this chair, Lorentz was appointed director of research at the Teyler Institute, Haarlem. He retained an honorary position at Leiden, where he continued to lecture. Before the existence of electrons was proved, Lorentz proposed that light waves were due to oscillations of an electric charge in the atom. Lorentz developed his mathematical theory of the electron for which he received the Nobel Prize in 1902.

    En aquellos años, la enseñanza que se impartía a los niños y jóvenes era bastante rigurosa y sacrificada, ya que los horarios de clases muchas veces se extendían hasta el anochecer (se aplicaba en algún sentido el método de Dalton) y, fue bajo ese régimen de estudios, que Hendrik Antoon Lorentz adquirió los conocimientos de la enseñanza básica. Por ello, cuando en 1866 se inauguró el primer establecimiento de enseñanza media (H.B.S) en Arnhem, Lorentz, como alumno talentoso que era, ingresó a ese establecimiento de inmediato al tercer año. Al finalizar su quinto año de estudios medios y de haber recibido durante un año formación sobre los clásicos, se incorporó a la Universidad de Leyden en 1870, donde obtuvo su licenciatura en matemáticas y física, recibiendo el correspondiente título en el año 1871. La visión que tuvieron los directivos de la Fundación Teyler, para darle forma al contrato que ligaba a Lorentz con la institución, fue lo que permitió a éste desligarse de las obligaciones rutinarias académicas y liberalizar su mente, expandiendo las alas del pensamiento tras la consecución del asombro y el ritual de lo bello, transitando así dentro del reino más alto de la ciencia, algo que siempre en la humanidad ha estado restringido a unos pocos.

Holandský fyzik Hendrik Antoon Lorentz se narodil roku 1853 v selské rodinì v Porýní. Od roku 1870 zaèal navštìvovat univerzitu v Leidenu, kde získal povìst vynikajícího studenta a kde pozdìji jako dvaadvacetiletý obhájil svou doktorskou práci zamìøenou na odraz a lom svìtla na rozhraní dvou prostøedí. Ve svých výzkumech se Hendrik Antoon Lorentz opíral o poznatky J. C. Maxwella a dokázal, že elektromagnetická teorie svìtla obsahuje vysvìtlení vztahù pro intenzity pøi odrazu a lomu. Lorentz se zabýval elektrodynamikou, termodynamikou, statistickou mechanikou, optikou, teorií záøení a atomovou fyzikou. Vypracoval novou elektronovou teorii, pomocí které mohl objasnit Zeemanùv efekt, Faradayùv efekt a celou øadu dalších velmi dùležitých elektrických a optických jevù. Tato jeho teorie znamenala velký pokrok ve fyzice a tìžkosti, které vyvolávala její aplikace na vnitroatomové jevy, vyøešila až kvantová fyzika. Jako první zformuloval v roce 1904 závislost hmotnosti elektronu na jeho rychlosti, odvodil vztah mezi permitivitou dielektrika a jeho hustotou, vysvìtlil závislost elektrické vodivosti tìles na tepelné vodivosti. Do speciální teorie relativity se zapsal formulací tzv. Lorentzovy transformace, která popisuje vztah mezi souøadnicemi a èasem ve vztažných soustavách, které se vùèi sobì pohybují rovnomìrnì pøímoèaøe.

    Físic holandès, nascut a Arnhem el 18 de juliol de 1853 i mort a Haarlem el 4 de febrer de 1928. Fill de Gerrit Frederick Lorentz i Geertruída Van Ginkel, que morí quan Lorentz tenia 4 anys. Lorentz millorà la teoria en tenir en compte la reflexió i la refracció de la llum, cosa que en el treball de Maxwell quedava una mica imprecís. Sobrepassà les deduccions de Maxwell, ja que segons ell la radiació electromagnètica es produïa per oscil·lació de càrregues elèctriques. Aquest fet li va fer guanyar la plaça a la Universitat de Leiden a 24 anys. Hertz demostrà que això era cert per a les ones de ràdio que havia aconseguit produir el 1887 fent oscil·lar càrregues elèctriques. A la seva tesi, Lorentz dilucidà els lligams i les condicions que calia imposar a les equacions de Maxwell en una superfície discontínua entre dos materials. Al començament de 1892, solucionà problemes com la dispersió o la convexitat de la llum en medis en moviment (els estudis ja comentats de Fresnel) mitjançant la teoria elèctrica que desenvolupà. Però si la llum era una radiació electromagnètica com les ones de ràdio, on estaven les ones oscil·lants?

    Pionier in de waterloopkunde H.A. Lorentz was hoogleraar in de theoretische natuurkunde. Hij was de grondlegger van Einsteins relativiteitstheorie en Nederlands grootste natuurkundige. Lorentz ontwikkelde een methode om de gevolgen te voorspellen die de aanleg van de Afsluitdijk zou hebben op de getijbewegingen in de Waddenzee. Hij leidde de Staatscommissie Zuiderzee (ook wel 'Commissie Lorentz' genoemd). Het werk van deze commissie is van onschatbare betekenis geweest voor het waterloopkundig onderzoek in Nederland. Onder leiding van Lorentz slaagde de commissie erin de ingewikkelde natuurkundige problemen van het bouwen in zee met behulp van de wiskunde op te lossen.
