Loyd, Sam - Britannica.com Loyd Biography Loyd 2 Mover 10 Loyd Chess Problems from Greekchess.com. Loyd Bio in French. Sam Loyd Homepage Focuses on Loyd's mathematical contributions. Sam Loyd earned worldwide renown through the development of puzzles, including chess problems. Loyd was born in Philadelphia in 1841, the youngest of 8 siblings. He began playing chess regularly in 1855, and over the next two years made his entry into problem creation with a splash. As a 16 year old, Loyd served with Paul Morphy as a contributor to Chess Monthly Loyd held a variety of jobs in his life: plumbing contractor, owner of a chain of music stores and newspaper columnist. He was also a magician and ventriloquist, and a friend of P.T. Barnum, the famous showman. However, his talent was displayed through the creation of puzzles, earning him the nickname "The Puzzle King". Loyd developed the game known as Parcheesi, which became an international fad. Another example of his work was the famous 14-15 puzzle, in which the solver must rearrange numbered tiles inside a box frame. While none of Loyd's chess problems ever created an international fad or made him a lot of money, they are recognized by knowledgeable observers as the work of a genius. Perhaps his signature traits were the injection of humor into problems, and his tremendous imagination. Loyd anticipated problem themes that would first become popular 50 or more years later.

    Sam Loyd
(Redirected from Fifteen puzzle Samuel Loyd ) American puzzle author and recreational mathematician . Author of the book Cyclopedia of Puzzles, published after his death. Sam Loyd claimed to have invented the famous " fifteen puzzle " where 15 of the 16 squares of a 4x4 frame are filled with numbered sliding pieces, leaving one space in which to slide on piece at a time. The puzzle is to slide the 15 pieces into order. The 'hook' in the fifteen puzzle is that there are two distinct sets of positions which can be assembled from the pieces, depending on parity , and there is no way of moving between them using the allowed moves, as they preserve parity. This allowed Loyd to offer a large prize which could never be claimed, fuelling the popularity of the game. For larger versions of the fifteen puzzle, the problem of finding a solution is easy. The problem of finding the

This list is in alphabetic order but the township and page number can be used for geographical proximity. Multiple spellings should be attempted when searching for a particular surname. If that fails try a fragment of the surname. You can even search for an unusual given name if you like. John is not a recommended try.
