STATISTICAL COLLECTIONS GUIDE The Special Collections Department holds many prominent collections relating to statistics. Included are the archival records of the American Statistical Association (ASA), founded in 1839 and one of the oldest professional organizations in the United States. It also contains collections documenting the editorial activities of the Journal of the American Statistical Association , published by ASA, and the Annals of Statistics , published by the Institute of Mathematical Statistics (IMS). In addition, there are collections of personal papers of notable statisticians in the United States, many of them former officers and fellows of the ASA or the IMS. Mardia is presently Senior Research Professor, a position which has been specially created by the University of Leeds after the expiry of his position asChair of Applied Statistics held since 1973. He was a founding Director of CoMIR . His publications comprise over two hundred articles in statistical journals and numerous books, including Statistical Shape Analysis, Statistics of Directional Data, Multivariate Analysis and The Art of Statistical Science: A Tribute to G. S. Watson. He recently edited volumes 1 and 2 of Statistics and Images, Proceedings of MIUA '98 and four Proceedings of the University of Leeds Annual Statistics Research Workshops (LASR) . He founded and organized the LASR Workshops, which have grown since 1973 into international conferences. In addition to spatial statistics, his current interests include bio-informatics, shape theory, image analysis, multivariate analysis and directional statistics. Recent research has covered topics such as face recognition from photographs, shape analysis of the human spine, Bayesian data fusion using medical images from different modalities, growth studies through laser scans, assessment of stereolithograph skull models and molecular structure of proteins. Mathematician Report Index Below is a list of mathematicians. You may choose from this list or report on a mathematician not listed here. In either case, you must discuss with me the mathematician you have chosen prior to starting your report. No two students may write a report on the same mathematician. I would advise you to go to the library before choosing your topic as there might not be much information on the mathematician you have chosen. Also, you should determine the topic early in the term so that you can "lock-in" your report topic!! The report must include: 1. The name of the mathematician. 2. The years the mathematician was alive. 3. A biography. 4. The mathematician's major contribution(s) to mathematics and an explanation of the importance. 5. A historical perspective during the time the mathematician was alive.
Some suggestions on the historical perspective might be:
    (a) Any wars etc.
    (b) Scientific breakthroughs of the time
    (c) Major discoveries of the time
    (d) How did this mathematician change history etc.

Multidimensional Statistical Analysis and Theory of Random Matrices
Proceedings of the Sixth Eugene Lukacs Symposium Editors: A.K. Gupta and V.L. Girko This volume contains the papers from the Sixth Eugene Lukacs Symposium on ``Multidimensional Statistical Analysis and Random Matrices'', which was held at the Bowling Green State University, Ohio, USA, 2930 March 1996. Multidimensional statistical analysis and random matrices have been the topics of great research. The papers presented in this volume discuss many varied aspects of this all-encompassing topic. In particular, topics covered include generalized statistical analysis, elliptically contoured distribution, covariance structure analysis, metric scaling, detection of outliers, density approximation, and circulant and band random matrices. This volume will be of great value and interest to researchers in the above fields. 1996; xii+386 pages

ABSTRACT This paper provides a brief summary of the principal research projects undertaken by the Anthropology Laboratory at the Deccan College. Research projects involving studies of both archaeological and modern populations are briefly discussed. The following projects were undertaken:

Bio-genetical affinities among the Koli community of Maharasthra, India
Health-nutrition assessment survey among the rural population of Madya Pradesh, India
    Dental Anthropology Project
The author worked as a Co-Investigator (with Dr. J.R. Lukacs, University of Oregon, Eugene, USA, as a Principal Investigator) for a project on dental anthropology. More than 1200 dental impressions were taken on some of the tribes and castes of Maharashtra for the assessment of morphometric features and biological affinities on dentition. The project was funded by the Smithsonian Institution, Washington, D.C. The field work phase was completed in 1984; the results are published in the form of four research papers.

Dental Anthropology of some of the living and prehistoric populations in India: a bio-cultural perspective
Computerised data base for cranio-facial variations in India: a multivariate approach for phenotypic assessment of human crania
    a. to get a statement for the ranges of measurable variation in the crania of recent man and to assess relative importance of specific morphological features.
