Jan Lukasiewicz (1878 - 1956)
Jan Lukasiewicz (pronounced Wu-cash-ay-vich) was born on December 21st, 1878 in the city of Lwow in Poland. He was one of several notable mathematicians specializing in logic during the first part of the twentieth century.
At the time of his birth, Poland was under Austrian rule, although Lwow later became part of the Soviet Union. His father was a captain in the Austrian army but at home they spoke Polish and were practising Roman Catholics. As a young man, Lukasiewicz studied mathematics and philosophy at the local University and was awarded a doctorate in 1902. He continued at the University of Lwow until 1915 when he accepted a lectureship at the University of Warsaw, which was under German occupation at the time. Between the wars he was the Polish Minister of Education and Dean of the School of Philosophy, also filling the post of Rector of the University for two terms. While at Warsaw he published some eighty articles and papers on psychology, mathematics and philosophy.
Like many in Poland, Lukasiewicz and his wife Regina suffered greatly during the Second World War. His house was burned, with the loss of his library and manuscripts, and he found it impossible to continue working. He started to give lectures at the underground university and also helped govern the city under German occupation. Friends in Switzerland and Germany helped him escape from Poland shortly before the abortive uprising of 1944. He was in hiding in Munster, Germany, when it was liberated by US troops in April, 1945. He then moved, via Belgium, to Dublin where he accepted the Chair of Logic at the Royal Irish Academy and was made a member of the Institute of Advanced Studies. He was able to resume his studies and publication and remained in Dublin until his death on February 13th, 1956.

Jan Keresztes and Ronald Lukasiewicz Receive 2000 Lillian D. Terris Award For Distinguished Board Service New York, NY, March 2001 - Professional Examination Service (PES) is pleased to announce the selection of Jan M. Keresztes, Pharm.D., and Ronald H. Lukasiewicz, R.Ph., as the recipients of the 2000 Lillian D. Terris Award for Distinguished Board Service. Named in honor of the first president of PES, the award recognizes individuals whose service contributions have enhanced the public and professional understanding of the missions of credentialing organizations and the meaning associated with professional credentials. Keresztes served as a member of the Certification Council of the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) from 1995 to 1999, including one year as Chair of the Council. Prior to her work with the PTCB, she was Chair of the Commission on Technician Certification for the Illinois Council of Health-System Pharmacists (ICHP) state certification program from 1982 to 1989. As Chair, she helped establish the ICHP pharmacy technician certification examination and was vital in the merging of the ICHP state examination with other state examinations into what was to become the premier national examination for pharmacy technicians in the United States. Lukasiewicz served a member of the PTCB Certification Council from 1995 to 2000, including a two-year term as Chair of the Council. Prior to his work with the PTCB, Lukasiewicz served as Chair of the Board of Examiners for the Michigan Certified Pharmacy Technician Program from 1981 to 1989. Working with the Michigan Pharmacist Association (MPA), he instituted the first certification program for pharmacy technicians and the first textbook for the training of pharmacy technicians. Under the leadership of Lukasiewicz, the MPA became one of the founding sponsors of the PTCB.

AROUND AND BEYOND MODERN POLISH ANALYTIC PHILOSOPHY
Strictures upon Peter Simons's Book:
Philosophy and Logic in Central Europe from Bolzano to Tarski

The only way for the future scientific philosophy is to forget for the present about the previous philosophy and to start quite anew.
Jan Lukasiewicz
1. THE QUESTION OF ROOTS Professor Peter Simons's book tries to combat this British picture of modern European philosophy, according to which it has two disjunct currents: analytic and continental, i.e. non-analytic. In fact, there is a part of this philosophy, which, being continental, is not non-analytic, but, on the contrary, substantially analytic. It is just Central European philosophy, containing the Austrian roots and its three main branches: Czech, German, and Polish. For Polish reader the author hopes i.a. to help exposing this Austrian roots of modern Polish philosophy. Professor Simons sees in Polish contribution to Central European philosophy "the only development, deriving historically from Bolzano [Czech-Austrian] and Brentano [German-Austrian], which fully maintained the original Austrian virtues (and added some of its own)"[5]. Professor Simons is a British-born but a time ago "nationalized" as Salzburgian, hence it may be understood that he reads the roots of particular branches of Central European philosophy into Austria. Warsawians have a little different perspective. Modern Polish analytic philosophy is, of course, deep-rooted in Austrian glebe. The interesting symptom of this state of affairs is, i.a., the following liguistic fact. Foreign surnames with the suffix "-o" have in Polish the genetive suffix "-a" (e.g., "Leoncavallo" - "Leoncavalla"), whereas Polish surnames have either "-i" (e.g. "Moniuszko" - "Moniuszki") or "-y" (e.g. "Szeluto" - "Szeluty"). The surnames of Bolzano and Brentano are notoriously declined by Polish philosophers according Polish paradigme: "Bolzany" instead of regular "Bolzana", and "Brentany" instead of regular "Brentana"!
