And if you saw the film, you should be able to remember it without the summary. If you want to relive it, then see it again. Professionally rendered blurbs can be helpful in deciding if you want to see a movie or not. Film criticism can be good if doesn't suck. But movie reviews? Please. Can’t live with them, unfortunately can’t stop them being printed. Now Playing City of God - Doesn't look too bad.

    Medal of Honor
    Vietnam War
Roger Donlon grew up in Saugerties, New York, the eighth of Paul and Marion Donlon's ten children. In his family he learned the important values of honesty, integrity, hard work, and personal commitment. As a young Boy Scout he learned patriotism and leadership. As a growing young man he tried to guide his life by the principles of the Ten Commandments and the Scout Oath. Military service was almost a tradition in the Donlon family, where the patriarch was a World War I veteran. Rogers brothers all served, one of them wounded in action. In this atmosphere young Roger developed inner character and leadership qualities that would guide him during a military career of his own, and sustain him and his soldiers on one horrible night in Vietnam. President of his high school junior class and a stand-out athlete, Roger joined the Air Force in 1953, then attended the US Military Academy at West Point for nearly two years. In 1959 he was commissioned as a US Army infantry lieutenant after graduating from Officer Candidate School at Fort Benning, Georgia. From there he attended airborne training, followed by the US Army Special Warfare School at Fort Bragg. After rugged training the young officer became one of America's elite, a Special Forces officer of the Green Berets. By 1964 Roger Donlon, now a Special Forces Captain responsible for a twelve man A-Team, was stationed in Vietnam. At the small Camp Nam Dong, deep in the dark jungles, his team served as advisors to 311 South Vietnamese soldiers. In the darkness of the early morning hours of July 6, more than 900 Viet Cong soldiers attacked Nam Dong with mortars, grenades, rifles and other small arms. Two members of Team A-726 died. Captain Donlon himself was wounded four times.

    A Portrait in Valor
by Doug Sterner It was 2:26 A.M. as Captain Donlon finished his rounds and stepped through the screen door of the mess hall to check the guard roster. The twelve members of Special Forces Team A-726 were ready, whatever the darkness of that early morning might hold. So too were the 311 South Vietnamese soldiers and 40 Nungs (ethnic Chinese who worked with Special Forces) that completed the contingent at what Army Chief of Staff General Harold K. Johnson described as "An outpost of Freedom." Suddenly the building erupted. The concussion of the exploding enemy mortar round threw Captain Donlon back out the door where he saw another round hit the command post and set it on fire. From the perimeter came the sounds of small arms and machinegun fire. Nam Dong was under attack. When morning dawned the five hour battle had left 55 of the South Vietnamese and Nung defenders of Nam Dong dead, another 65 wounded. Pop Alamo and John Houston were also dead, never to witness the birth of children their pregnant wives were bearing at home. But the defenders at Nam Dong had held through the night, outnumbered at least 3 to 1 by a reinforced battalion of enemy soldiers. Donlon's team would become one of the most highly decorated units in Army history. In addition to Donlon's award, our Nation's second highest medal for military valor The Distinguished Service Cross was presented posthumously to Alamo and Houston. Four team members were awarded the Silver Star, the other five team members each received the Bronze Star with "V" for valor.

Kansas City lecture series addresses big questions
by Roger Martin Question 1: Whatever happened to liberalism in America? Question 2: What forces eroded our sense of good and evil in the 20th century? I like it that two University of Kansas professors are addressing those grand questions. This spring, they and some other academics are talking to audiences at Unity Temple in Kansas City, Mo., as part of a "Whatever Happened to ..." lecture series organized by KU's Hall Center for the Humanities. In late March, Bill Tuttle, a professor of American studies, told a crowd that American liberalism was doing fine up till the 1960s. The New Deal Coalition of Franklin Roosevelt was a powerful engine for liberalism from the 1930s to the 1960s. It even found support from Republican President Dwight Eisenhower, Tuttle said. For example, Ike extended Social Security to some groups like farmers originally excluded from the program. Then liberalism peaked in the mid '60s with Lyndon Johnson's Great Society. Racism and George Wallace smote liberalism from the right, Tuttle says. Blue-collar workers flocked out of the Democratic Party, and the Solid South dissolved. On the other hand, Johnson and the 1968 Democratic candidate for president, Hubert Humphrey, drove liberal intellectuals out of the party with their anti-communist, pro-Vietnam war stance.

Experience: 12 years Alma Mater: Texas Tech University, 1984 Roger Reding is in his 13th year on Marsha Sharp's staff and has been the one responsible for the perimeter game that the Lady Raiders have been known for years. Reding has coached some standout perimeter players, including Sheryl Swoopes and point guard Melinda Schmucker-Pharies, who became Tech's all-time career leader in assists. During the 2001-02 season, the Lady Raiders set school records for most three pointers made in a game (12). That is just a little of what Reding has accomplished while at Texas Tech. But that is not all of Reding's responsibilities. He also oversees equipment operations and handles scheduling. This season alone, the Lady Raiders will square off with the likes of Louisiana Tech, Washington, Oregon State and Rutgers, just to name a few. Reding has enjoyed success at every stop on the coaching ladder from high school, to junior college, to Texas Tech and he has done it while staying close to home. In his 17th year of coaching, Reding's position is unusual in that he has coached at all three of his alma maters. A 1981 graduate of South Plains College in Levelland, Reding returned there to accept his first coaching job in 1984. He was a women's assistant coach and Intramural Director.

    Roger L. Stevens
    March 12, 1910 - February 2, 1998 Roger Lacey Stevens
, known in Washington, DC as the man who built the Kennedy Center, was a major force in America's cultural life for more than forty years. His work on behalf of the performing arts not only enriched the cultural life of our nation's capital, but also had a far-reaching impact on the arts nationwide. Already a highly successful real estate broker, Mr. Stevens backed his first Broadway production in 1949. The production of Shakespeare's "Twelfth Night" lost $40,000, but received excellent reviews. Mr. Stevens went on to become one of this country's greatest theatrical producers, presenting over 250 plays and musicals including West Side Story, Bus Stop, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, A Man for All Seasons and Tea and Sympathy After an illustrious career on Broadway, Mr. Stevens came to Washington in 1961 at the request of President John F. Kennedy. President Kennedy asked him to help establish the National Cultural Center, which later would be named in honor of the slain president The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. As Chairman of the Kennedy Center's Board of Trustees from 1961-1988, Mr. Stevens led the Center's fundraising efforts and guided its programming. It is reported that in his capacity as chairman, Mr. Stevens raised roughly $150 million from Congress and corporate and individual donors for the construction, operation and endowment of the Center.
