At four minutes past noon on Easter Monday, April 24 th , 1916, a sudden hush fell over the O’Connell Street. From the steps of the General Post Office Patrick Pearse read the Proclamation of the Republic:
POBLACHT NA h-EIREANN
THE PROVISIONAL GOVERNMENT OF THE
IRISH REPUBLIC
TO THE PEOPLE OF IRELAND
IRISHMAN AND IRISHWOMEN: In the name of God and of the dead generations from which she receives her old tradition of nationhood, Ireland, through us, summons her children to her flag and strikes for her freedom.

P.H.PEARSE EAMONN CEANNT
JAMES CONNOLLY JOSEPH PLUNKETT When Pearse finished, the beaming Connolly took his hand and shook it vigorously. A few ragged cheers hung in the air, but the poet, Stephen McKenna, who listened to Pearse read these words, recorded later that he felt sad for him, for the response from the crowd was chilling. There were no wild hurrahs, no scenes reminiscent of the excitement which had gripped the French mob before they stormed the Bastille. The Irish simply listened and shrugged their shoulders, or sniggered a little, and then glanced round to see if the police were coming. Nearby young insurgents were posting copies of the Proclamation, or handing them round among the crowd. One copy, weighted down with stones, was placed on the ground at the foot of Nelson Pillar so that everybody could read it.

THE
EIGHTEENTH
CENTURY
The dominating influence of Newton had an unfortunate effect in turning the attention of English and Irish mathematicians away from the important developments taking place on the Continent. In consequence the contribution of Trinity mathematicians during the 18th century was not as distinguished as it otherwise might have been. There were, nevertheless, some able people such as William Hales, Hugh Hamilton, Richard Murray and Matthew Young. When Hales' Analysis Aequationum was published in 1784 the great French mathematician lagrange wrote of it `La clarté et la précision qui règnent dans cet ouvrage et la réunion qu'il présent des méthodes élémentaires et des théories sublimes doivent lui donner un des premiers rangs parmi ceux de son genre.' Hamilton published books on conic sections and on natural philosophy, and Young wrote An enquiry into the principal phenomena of sounds and musical strings . Murray, who was Professor of Mathematics from 1764 until 1795 when he became Provost, was influential as a teacher, particularly towards the candidates for Fellowship. The philosopher George Berkeley, who was a Fellow from 1707 to 1724 was an early critic of the underlying basis of Newton's calculus.

We make no apology for putting the picture of Clonmany Chapel on the front page again because it gives us an opportunity of saying a few words on the history of this lovely Church. Up to 1794 there was no Chapel in the district and mass was said at the "Scallan" above Porters in Gaddyduff. There was no building and a sheet was put up on the windy side to shelter the Altar. The first Chapel was built by Father Shiels in 1795 and enlarged in 1829, the year of Catholic Emancipation. The Bell-Tower and Long Aisle were added by Father O'Donnell in 1843. He had a Chapel-gate collection to collect the debt. But this was very slow so he put a levy of a guinea on every house in the parish and the debt was paid in a fortnight. The Bell was rung for the first time on the 9th. April 1845, and that was the first time a Catholic bell was heard in Clonmany since the Reformation when the old Monastory in Straid was dissolved in 1610.
