Collected Works in Mathematics and Statistics
This is a list of Mathematics and Statistics collected works that can be found at Dalhousie University and at other Halifax universities. The vast majority of these works are located in the Killam Library on the Dalhousie campus. A guide to other locations is given at the end of this list. If a title is owned by both Dalhousie and another university, only the Dalhousie site is listed. For all locations, and for full bibliographic details, see the NOVANET library catalogue This list was compiled, and the collection is being enlarged, with the invaluable help of the Bibliography of Collected Works maintained by the Cornell University Mathematics Library. The thumbnail sketches of mathematicians were taken from the MacTutor History of Mathematics Archive at the University of St. Andrews. For correction, comments, or questions, write to Karl Dilcher ( dilcher@mscs.dal.ca You can scroll through this list, or jump to the beginning of the letter:

    70. 24-Colour Triangles
These 24 triangles form a set invented by Major percy Alexander macmahon, who also invented similar sets of 30 cubes and 24 squares.
    http://members.tripod.com/boliaoness/math/24colour.html
    24 Colour Triangles
  • The triangles must be fitted such that meeting edges have the same colour, and The entire border of the shape has only one colour.
  • One of the greatest investigators into the triangles is Wade E. Philpott, whose puzzles and solutions were published in Martin Gardner’s Mathematical Games column and later in his book, Mathematical Magic Show The number of ways the triangles can be fitted into a parallelogram with dimensions 3x4 is also not known, but Philpott believes it is less than that of the hexagon. Again, six solutions are found, each also having three smaller hexagons of one colour each within it. He also invented many other puzzles, such as the "duplication problem", which is to form two identical symmetrical shapes that meet the two conditions set by MacMahon and with borders of different colours. There are 28 shapes known to be solvable. The "triplication problem" is similar, but three shapes have to be made instead of two. It has been proved that only ten symmetrical shapes are solvable. These are shown below, with a solution for one of them. Back

    biography
Born Mary Tomlinson in Indiana in 1890, Marjorie Main's father was a minister who did not approve of dramatics as a form of entertainment. She briefly attended college in Indiana but left to attend drama school. Upon graduation, she taught dramatics for a year but eventually went into vaudeville in the 1910s. When she married Dr. Stanley Krebs in 1921, she more or less gave up performing for several years. Krebs, who was about 25 years older than Main, retired to New York later in the 1920s; Main then resumed acting, this time on Broadway. Her film career began with small roles in the early 1930s. But with the death of her husband in 1935, Main threw herself into her work. She never remarried and had no children.
From 1936 through 1957, Main acted in more than 100 'A' and 'B' pictures, tackling comedy and drama with ease. She took on a variety of supporting roles in big-budget films, and she was often a star attraction in the B's, such as the Ma and Pa Kettle series produced by Universal.

    Introduction
[TofC] In economic theory, "duality" means "convex duality," which includes duality in linear and non-linear programming as special cases. Series-parallel duality has been studied largely in electrical circuit theory and, to some extent, in combinatorial theory. Series-parallel duality also occurs in economics and finance, and it is closely related to convex duality. When resistors with resistances a and b are placed in series, their compound resistance is the usual sum (hereafter the series sum ) of the resistances a+b. If the resistances are placed in parallel, their compound resistance is the parallel sum of the resistances, which is denoted by the full colon: Series and Parallel Sums The parallel sum is associative x:(y:z)) = (x:y):z, commutative x:y = y:x, and distributive x(y:z) = xy:xz. On the positive reals, there is no identity element for either sum but the "closed circuit" and the "open circuit" can be added to form the extended positive reals. Those elements are the identity elements for the two sums, x+0 = x = x:
