Wilhelm Magnus attended the University of Frankfurt receiving his doctorate from that university in 1931. His doctorate was supervised by Dehn who asked Magnus various questions about one-relator groups in 1928. Magnus was able to answer these questions and published his results on one-relator groups in 1930. In 1932 he published a major result in combinatorial group theory when he proved that the word problem for one-relator groups is soluble. Magnus was appointed to the staff in Frankfurt serving from 1933 until 1938. During this time he spent the session 1934/35 at Princeton University in the United States. During this period Magnus introduced Lie ring methods to study the lower central series of free groups . He studied the automorphism groups of free groups in 1934. In 1935 Magnus gave examples of finitely presented groups which were isomorphic to proper factor groups of themselves.

    Emil Wilhelm Magnus Georg Kraepelin
German psychiatrist, born February 15, 1856, Neustrelitz, Mecklenburg; died October 7, 1926, Munich.
    Associated eponyms:
    Kraepelin's classification

A classification of mental illness according to symptoms, causes and course. Kraepelin's disease I Systematizing delusions developed without dementia or hallucinations. Kraepelin's disease II Ponopathia. A neurosis, for example neurasthenia, triggered by tense activity. Kraepelin's syndrome Kraepelin-Morel disease Schizophrenia. Biography: Emil Wilhelm Magnus Georg Kraepelin was one of the most influential psychiatrists of his time. His classification system for mental illness influenced subsequent classifications, and his distinctions between schizophrenia and manic-depressive psychosis remain valid today. Kraepelin studied medicine in Würzburg and Leipzig, where he made the personal acquaintance of Wilhelm Max Wundt (1832-1920). Whilst still a student he decided to become a psychiatrist - Irrenarzt – and was awarded a prize for a work on psychiatry from the University of Würzburg, where he was called upon as assistant to Franz von Rinecker (1811-1883) at the age of 21 years. After passing the Examina at the University of Würzburg in 1878 he succeeded Aguste-Henri Forel (1848-1931) as assistant to Johann Bernhard Aloys von Gudden (1824-1886) in the Oberbayerische Kreisirrenanstalt in Munich, and worked there for four years. Here he used Wundt’s experimental techniques to study the effects of drugs, alcohol, and fatigue on psychological function, and in 1881 published a study of the influence of infectious diseases on the onset of mental illness.

Ruotsista muutettuaan Magnus von Wright asettui asumaan Helsinkiin. Kaupungista tuli myös hänen taiteensa uusi aihe. Helsingin kaltaisen pikkukaupungin pysähtynyt rauha sopi hyvin taiteilijan hiljaisen mietteliäälle ja pohdiskelevalle luonteelle. Puutalokaupungin verkkainen elämänmeno sai Magnuksesta ensimmäisen kuvaajansa; näin syntyivät varhaisimmat Suomen taiteen tuntemat kaupunkikuvat. Biedermeierin aika B.A. Godenhjelm ja C.E. Magnus Lindberg
Compositeur finlandais né le 27 juin 1958 à Helsinki
    Biographie
