mahler's 8th at "motab" next exciting page last exciting page back to "about kurt" back to "utah adventures" Dear Erik: I had mentioned that the local band up here, the Utah Symphony, was undertaking the Mahler Eighth at the Mormon Tabernacle. This is how it went. The Symphony is a great touchstone for me. Through the good graces (and tight schedules) of my employer Gibbs Smith, and his wife, Catherine, the season tickets they cannot use very often fall to me. They have very nice seats on the floor of Abravanel Hall, where one is able to hear everything splendidly. They are a touchstone because, even though this is Utah, and there are deer hunters everywhere and the support guys from Hill Air Force Base are walking around in fatigues, it is reassuring to know that there are other people here who hold the classical repertory in high regard. I don't feel quite so alone when I attend the Utah Symphony, and this is the very highest good that art can produce. Keith Lockhart before he eschewed his baton. That's concertmaster Ralph Matson, who is somehow related to Gibbs Smith!

Bill Ford (wtf@alaska.net) is the source for information concerning Mahler-related articles and books. Thanks to him for forwarding the above information, as well as this comment: "The book is handsomely done, it belongs in ever Mahler collection. Some of the essays are better than others (isn't this always true?) The musicological analyses are (as usual) frustratingly meaningless to me. But MOST of the essays are a delightful read. HOME Introduction Timeline Speeches ... About the Exhibit Kurt Klein
Address for Opening Reception of "When Books Burn" exhibit
    Tucson, Arizona
May 10, 2001 I offer some reflections of what happens when free speech and thought is abrogated, because that is, after all, what this event is all about. Aside from the larger picture, I hope I can give you some idea of how those twelve years, during which the Third Reich visited its barbarism on the world, affected ordinary people, whose only "crime" was that they happened to be born into a different faith. This will not be a recitation of the statistics of that era, rather it is a personal perception of how those events played out for me and my family, along with the other Jews of Germany. I was directly affected by the political strife of that time, having been born during the relatively short period between the two great world wars. Growing up in Germany during the years of the Weimar Republic, I saw the monster of Nazism forcing its way in to the political arena, its propaganda drawing ever more of the masses into its spell, until it became unstoppable. That, as we know, resulted in Hitler's assumption of power in 1933, something that, for us, the Jews, marked the end of a life in which we had thought we were no different from the rest of the population.

ICH LIEBE DICH NICHT - ANITA AMMERSFELD PREISER PR 90531. Viennese-born Anita Ammersfeld sings 14 songs by Kurt Weill, featuring such favourites as Je ne t’aime pas, Surabaya-Johnny, and September Song. Anita Ammersfeld is a fine lyrical soprano, well known for her opera and operetta performances all over Europe. Her beautiful, well-trained voice and technique allows her to tackle a wide repertoire that ranges from Cherubin (Marriage of Figaro) to Dido (Dido and Aeneas). This a delightful CD that makes a welcome introduction to the works of one of the Twentieth Century’s most intriguing and influential composers. GALA DEL DIA - CHORAL MUSIC FROM THE AMERICAS NORTH/SOUTH R 1025 The highly talented Americas Vocal Ensemble performs an anthology of wonderfully diverse choral music from the New World, recorded live at Christ Chapel of The Riverside Church in New York City. The album features a wide variety of styles, with fascinating music from the colonial era and adventurous works by living composers. These include Damon Lee's La exclamacion (The Exclamation), inspired by the poetry of Octavio Paz, the Nobel Laureate Mexican writer. Other composers include Carlos Guastavino (Gala del dia - “Day's Splendor”), Gunhild Glass (Three Songs on Texts by Garcia Lorca), Alberto Favero, Yvette Souviron (Carnavalito) and Owen Goldsmith (The Tender Affliction). There are excellent liner notes to accompany the recording and set the music in context. FULL FATHOM FIVE - WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE
