Contents Introduction The Sutta-nipata or "Discourse-collection," from which this selection has been compiled, contains some of the oldest and most profound discourses of the Buddha. The complete text has been translated at least three times into English, the most recent being by E.M. Hare under the title "Woven Cadences" (Oxford University Press, London, 1945). The Pali original consists mainly of verse interspersed with some prose passages and Hare has followed this arrangement by translating it into English blank verse. However, in the selection appearing below the aim has been to keep as near as possible to the original, and no attempt has been made to versify it. The first discourse shows the distinction between the mode of conduct of the bhikkhu and the layman, both regarded as virtuous or good (sadhu). For, as it is said elsewhere:

IV. Maha Kassapa
So far, in this series of narratives about the lives and psalms of the early Buddhists, there has been no account of people having given up matrimonial bonds for the Buddhist order except for the Buddha himself. Maha Pajapati was a widow and the venerable Rahula was only seven when he entered the order, and the venerable Ambapali was never married. This time we bring you a story about a well matched couple who willingly parted company, to each leave the world. They must have been reasonably happy together, at least to the public view, for they feared, even after they had left the world, that people would say that they could not bear to be apart, and so went separate ways after they left their city. (1) Also, even in their recorded private conversations, affection, gentleness and compassion for each other was evident. With all this understanding and companionship in their relationship, it was truly a very rare union. Kassapa the Great was born Pippali-manava, the son of the chief wife of Kapila the brahmin of the brahmin village Maha-tittha in Magadha. When of age, the young man refused to marry, saying that he would take care of his parents while they lived, after which he would leave the world. Presumably his parents were very upset that he should not provide an heir to their immense wealth, because even to this day, it is considered proper to have large numbers of children to carry on the lineage. Whatever amount of entreaty, pressure or persuasion he might have received, he finally appeased his mother by, according to records, having a statue of an extremely beautiful woman made, and declaring that he would lead a domestic life if he could ever find a person like her. From Bangalore a beacon of light and wisdom is going to transform mankind.
GETRAM is being inaugurated at Bangalore on Thursday, 30th January 2003 by the Internationally renowned LIFE ACTIVIST - Poojya Sri Guruji Viswanath , who is the founder patron of Manava Seva Kendra.
His Excellency, Shri T.N.Chaturvedi, The Governor of Karnataka is the Chief Guest for the Occasion.
The kendra believes that the current sad state of the world with wars, illiteracy, ill-health, poverty and jealousy among mankind is primarily due to people having forgotten the basic human values and culture.
Man, the crown of creation will continue to live the life of an animal and vegetable unless he understands the purpose of life, human values, character and starts practicing them.
Every form of education today is on non-experiential plane and needs to be thoroughly revamped by integrating the fundamental values. There is no one to guide humanity especially in the experiential plane. There is no one to guide and provide the humanity with the personal experience of truth.

Christian era, though it may possibly be a century or two older. Most of its contents, however, may be safely given a much greater antiquity. Scholars are now pretty well agreed that the work is an amplified recast in verse of a "Dharma-sutra", no longer extant, that may have been in existence as early as 500 B.C. The sutras were manuals composed by the teachers of the Vedic schools for the guidance of their pupils. They summed up in aphorisms, more or less methodically arranged, the enormously complicated mass of rules, laws, customs, rites, that the Brahmin student had to know by heart. Every Vedic school of importance had its appropriate sutras , among which were the "Grihya-sutras", dealing with domestic ceremonies, and the "Dharma-sutras", treating of the sacred customs and laws. A fair number of these have been preserved, and form part of the sacred Brahmin literature. In course of time, some of the more ancient and popular "Dharma-sutras" were enlarged in their scope and thrown into metrical form constituting the so-called "Dharma-sastras". Of these the most ancient and most famous is the "Laws of Manu", the "Manava Dharma-sastra", so called as scholars think, because based on a "Dharma-sutra" of the ancient Manava school. The association of the original sutra with the name Manava seems to have suggested the myth that Manu was its author, and this myth, incorporated in the metrical "Dharma-sastra", probably availed to secure the new work universal acceptance as a divinely revealed book.
