MASCARON, JULES
Mascara (i.e. “ mother of soldiers “) was the capital of a Turkish beylik during the Spanish occupation of Oran from the I 6th to the close of the 18th century; but for the most of that period it occupied a site about two miles distant from the present position. On the removal of the bey to Oran its importance rapidly declined; and it was an insignificant place when in 1832 Abd~el-Kader, who was born in the neighbourhood, chose it as the seat of his power. It was laid in ruins by the French under Marshal Clausel and the duke of Orleans in 1835, the amir retreating south. Being reoccupied by Abd-el-Kader in 1838, Mascara was again captured in 1841 by Marshal Bugeaud and General Lamoricière. MASCARENE ISLANDS (occasionally MASCARENHAS), the collective title of a group in the Indian Ocean east of Madagascar, viz. Mauritius, Reunion and Rodriguez (q.v.). The collective title is derived from the Portuguese navigator Mascarenhas, by whom Reunion, at first called Mascarenhas, was discovered. MASCARON, JULES (1634—1703), French preacher, was the son of a barrister at Aix. Born at Marseilles in 1634, he early entered the French Oratory, and obtained great reputation as a preacher. Paris confirmed the judgment of the provinces; in 1666 he was asked to preach before the court, and became a great favourite with Louis XIV., who said that his eloquence was one of the few things that never grew old. In 1671 he was appointed bishop of Tulle; eight years later he was transferred to the larger diocese of Agen. He still continued, however, to preach regularly at court, being especially in request for funeral orations. A panegyric on Turenne, delivered in 1675, is considered his masterpiece. His style is strongly tinged with préciosité; and his chief surviving interest is as a glaring example of the evils from which Bossuet delivered the French pulpit. During his later years he devoted himself entirely to his pastoral duties at Agen, where he died in 1703.

Abstract Mohr in 1672 and Mascheroni in 1797 proved the fundamental theorem according to which every ruler and compass construction can be made using only the compass. In this paper we describe how a Cabri based microworld can be built, in which only compass is available to the user. Theoretical and hystorical framework A geometric model can be defined as the set of tools available for geometric contructions and the set of elementary operations that can be performed using these tools. The most important and widely studied of these models is the compass model, which allows the use of compass only. The Danish geometer G. Mohr in 1672 discovered an important result about the compass model; but his book "Euclides Danicus" was lost and was rediscovered only three centuries later. In 1797 the Italian geometer Lorenzo Mascheroni (1750-1800) published in Pavia his "Geometria del compasso", stating (at least implicitely) the now called Mascheroni-Mohr theorem "All geometric contructions that can be made using ruler and compass can be made using only the compass"; in other words, the ruler and compass model and the compass model are equivalent.

Geometric Construction with the Compass Alone
Everything you can do with a ruler and a compass you can do with the compass alone. Well, not everything. For example, you can't draw straight lines using a compass. There is no talking about it. However, you can do everything reasonable. I hope you would find this claim no less remarkable. In what is known as the Geometry of Compass , a straight line is defined by any pair of two points. Starting with two points, other points can be constructed with compass alone. Thus in the following constructing a straight line means finding two points that belong to that line.
Remark
There are geometries in which the ruler is never used to start with. E. g., in finite geometries that only contain a finite number of points and lines, a line is just a (finite) collection of points. On the sphere, the role of straight lines is played by the great circles. The question of geometric construction with the compass alone is not concerned with such kinds of geometries. Geometry of Compass only deals with constructions in the Euclidean plane, and its basic question could be formulated as, What ruler-and-compass constructions could be accomplished with the compass alone?

THE ARCHITECTURAL BOOKS OWNED
BY THOMAS JEFFERSON To know what architectural books were at hand is particularly important in Jefferson's case on account of his dependence on books for his inspiration. Knowledge of those which he owned at the time of making any given design will almost always enable one to identify its prototypes, and conversely, they cannot often, in his isolation, have been drawn from other sources. Such knowledge has already been utilized in the text and in the notes to the drawings; it now remains to show the sources of this information and present them in complete and systematic form. Note: p90m1 Jefferson really collected two libraries, the first, much the larger, being sold to the national government in 1815, and the second, willed to the University of Virginia, having to be dispersed by sale in 1829 to assist in the settlement of Jefferson's estate. Of the first we have two catalogues, Jefferson's own, in manuscript, preserved by the Massachusetts Historical Society, and the one printed by the Government, prepared by him on the basis of this, but showing only the books actually received. Note: p90f1 Both are classified on a system developed by Jefferson, with a special chapter devoted to architecture. Of the later library we have the catalogue of the sale of 1829

Uruguai - 1930
