Enlightenment and Dissent was founded in 1982 as the successor to the Price-Priestley Newsletter. The latter was concerned with the Rational Dissent in late eighteenth-century England; Enlightenment and Dissent set out to broaden its scope within the area of what can be described as the English Enlightenment. It has published articles on major as well as neglected figures. Articles published since 1982 have ranged from John Locke, Mathew Tindal, Samuel Clarke (special number), Henry Grove, Edmund Law, William Chambers, David Hartley, William Paley, Richard Price, Joseph Priestley, Mary Wollstonecraft, Mary Hays, William Godwin, Francis Maseres, Joseph Towers, Sir William Jones, David Williams, John Thelwall and Jeremy Bentham. Reviewing the journal in the Times Literary Supplement in the 1980s, Roy Porter concluded: Whether such a beast as the English Enlightenment ever existed is still a bone of contention. This admirable journal is helping to settle the question in the affirmative. The co-editors of the journal are Martin Fitzpatrick and James Dybikowski. D. O. Thomas is editor emeritus.

Subject: Mathematics education Type: Special session For the last two and a half years I have been teaching and guiding teachers in elementary schools in Israel. In this period I learnt a lot about mathematical education, and surprisingly also some math. In the talk I will describe some of what I have learnt, and tell the curious story of the mathematical education in Israel during the last 25 years.

The stable equivalence problem
Subject: Representation Theory Type: Plenary In algebra there are many concepts which state that two objects or categories are "the same." Isomorphism, Morita equivalence and derived equivalence are well understood examples. However, stable equivalence of module categories is hardly understood at all and many basic questions in representation theory are tied in with this idea. A survey, open questions and examples are discussed.

OLD-AGE PENSIONS
Accordingly a departmental committee (chairman, Sir E. Hamilton) was appointed, which reported in January 1900. The estimated cost of the above plan was, by this committee, calculated at £10,300,000 in 1901, rising to £15,650,000 in 1921. Mr Chaplin had publicly suggested that £2,000,000, the proceeds of a Is. duty on corn, would go a long way to meet the needs of the case—a conjecture which was obviously far too sanguine. These unfavourable reports discouraged the more responsible advocates of state pensions. Mr Chamberlain appealed to the friendly societies to formulate a plan, an invitation which they showed no disposition to accept. Efforts continued to be made to press forward Mr Booth’s universal endowment scheme or some modification of it. To this Mr Chamberlain declared his hostility. And here the matter rested, till in his Budget speech in 1907 Mr Asquith pledged the Liberal government to start a scheme in 1908. disqualifies for ten years; and (5) liability to disqualification for a period not exceeding ten years in the case of an habitual drunkard. The graduated scale of pensions is given in a schedule to the act, and provide that when the yearly means of a pensioner do not exceed £2I he shall have the full pension of 5s. a week, which diminishes by IS. a week for every addition of £2, I2s. 6d. to his income, until the latter reaches £31, 105., when no pension is payable. The pension is paid weekly, on Fridays (~ 5), and is inalienable (~ 6).

dangerous intrigue with Courtin and Barillon, the French envoys, and Louis XIV.; he refused, however, the latter~s presents on the ground that he was a member of the council, having been appointed to Sir William Temple’s new modelled cabinet in 1679. Barillon described lum as at this period in his old age “the man of all England for whom the different cabals have the’ most consideration,” and as firmly opposed to the arbitrary designs of the court. He showed moderation in the Popish Plot, and on the question of the exclusion followed Halifax rather than Shaftesbury. His long and eventful career closed by his death on the 17th of February 1680. The character of Holles has been drawn by Burnet, with whom he was on terms of friendship. “Hollis was a man of great courage and of as great pride... . He was faithful and firm to his side and never changed through the whole course of his life. Holles married (I) in 1628 Dorothy, daughter and heiress of Sir Francis Ashley; (2) in 1642 Jane, daughter and co-heiress of Sir John Shirley of Ifleld in Sussex and widow of Sir Walter Covert of Slougham, Sussex; and (3) in 1666 Esther, daughter and co-heiress of Gideon Le Lou of Columbiers in Normandy, widow of James Richer. By his first wife he left one son, Francis, who succeeded him as 2nd baron. He had no children by his other wives, and the peerage became extinct in the person of his grandson Denzil, 3rd Baron Holles, in 1694, the estates devolving on John Holles (1662—1711), 4th earl of Clare and duke of Newcastle.
