(1732-1811) - the fifth Astronomer Royal of England who attempted to view the 1761 transit of Venus from the island of St. Helena in the South Atlantic. He also was the first person to determine the mass and mean density of the earth.
Maunder, Edward Walter (1851-1928) - English astronomer who while studying the history of sunspots discovered a period from 1645 to 1715 in which there appeared a lack of sunspots. This has been since called the "Maunder minimum". Maury, Antonia C. - Harvard astronomer who in studied the spectra of stars. Beginning in 1897 she categorized the different spectra of stars of the same color. She narrowed the classification sequences then in use.

Our magic

English Government Awards Prize to Clockmaker
by Paul Chrastina
John Harrison's interest in clocks and watches originated during his childhood. According to tradition, Harrison survived a life-threatening bout of smallpox comforted by the steady ticking of a pocket watch that had been placed by his bedside. As a teenager growing up near the English port town of Hull, Harrison began to design and build clocks for the wealthy merchants of the town.
In 1714, when he was twenty-one years old, Harrison heard that a grand prize of 20,000 pounds sterling was being offered by the British Parliament for a solution to the problem of determining a ship's longitude at sea. A Board of Longitude had been appointed to study the problem and to award the prize to anybody who solved it.
Accurate measurment of a ship's longitude, or position to the east or west of a given point on the globe, was considered by many sailors to be an unsolvable problem in navigation. In the two centuries that European nations had been regularly sending ships across the Atlantic Ocean to the New World, many had been lost or stranded far from their original destinations because their captains were unable to determine their exact location while crossing the open ocean.
Although many methods had been proposed to solve this serious navigational problem, only two seemed to hold out any promise of a solution.

COMETA MÁGICO If you can't view left menu click Here Jasper Maskelyne Jasper Maskelyne, was born in 1902 in England, a music hall conjurer, never fired a shot in battle, but his amazing feats played a key role in the Allied victory in Africa. Among his many triumphs, Maskelyne “hid” the Suez Canal and conjured up illusions of armies and battleships, fooling German forces led by General Erwin Rommel into retreat. The grandson of John Nevil Maskelyne, one of the founding fathers of British magic, Maskelyne was a celebrated stage magician before the war. Convinced he could use his skills to help the army, Maskelyne wooed sceptical officials by creating the illusion of a German warship floating down the Thames using mirrors and a model. He was placed in charge of the Royal Engineers Camouflage Corps and sent to Egypt where he performed some genuine mission impossibles. Asked to prevent the Germans from bombing Alexandria Harbour, the conjurer redirected the bombers by recreating the harbour’s exact lighting pattern three miles away. He “vanished” the Suez Canal by building a series of spinning strobe lights to put pilots off their bearings. Maskelyne’s greatest triumph came in 1942 when he successfully convinced Rommel that the British Eighth Army was in the south of the Egyptian desert and that the Alamein attack would begin there rather than in the north. Although praised privately by Churchill and hunted by Hitler, Maskelyne ended his days in relative obscurity as a farmer in Kenya and died in 1973.

on the 1st of August, and Lady Masham then retired into private life. She died on the 6th of December 1734. Lady Masham was by no means the vulgar, ill-educated person she was represented to have been by her defeated rival, the duchess of Marlborough; her extant letters, showing not a little refinement of literary style, prove the reverse. Swift, with whom both she and her husband were intimate, describes Lady Masham as “a person of a plain sound understanding, of great truth and sincerity, without the least mixture of falsehood or disguise.” The barony of Masham became extinct when Lady Masham’s son, Samuel, the 2nd baron, died in June 1776. http://littleegyptmagic.com/ourmag.htm
The Little Egypt Gazette presents: In the July 1996 issue of The Little Egypt Gazette , which I naively thought would be the final issue of this journal, I included an article entitled "Mr. Parrish and Company." The piece was an appreciation of four books that significantly influenced me as a child and which, for better or worse, led me down this magical path so many of you have also chosen. The books were New Ways to Mystify and For Magicians Only , by Robert Parrish; Magic Made Easy , a soft-covered pulp how-to book by Carl March (a pseudonym for Sid Fleischman); and Magic for All , by magician/cartoonist Bob Dunn. For the sake of brevity, I omitted two other influential books from that article Our Magic , by Maskelyne and Devant (which I assumed all magicians to be familiar with), and an introductory tome, Everybody's Book of Magic , by Will Dexter. As both these books are of British origin, and because they gave me, at a young age, a particularly British view of the overall world of magic, now is a fitting time in which to consider their merits, and especially to bring them to the attention of any reader who has yet to encounter them.
by
Nevil Maskelyne and David Devant My home town library's edition of Our Magic looked (still looks, actually, as I now own it) more like a magic book than any other book I've ever seen. Its cover is a rich brown cloth, and, although the binding has been replaced with a stock library binding, replete with the Dewey decimal 793.8, the cover still clearly conveys the image of a Merlinesque figure holding a steaming bowl of something, with bats fluttering about his head. The three principal sections of the book, "The Art in Magic," "The Theory of Magic," and "The Practice of Magic," are prominently displayed along with the authors' names, Nevil Maskelyne and David Devant. (Maskelyne wrote the first two sections, Devant the last.) It's a surprisingly heavy book for its size, no doubt because of the weight of the 505 glossy pages within.

The Theater of Wonder by John Tudor An examination of the history and theory of the magic play, fusing magic and drama.
Winner of Best Article Award Definition
In its simplest sense the Magic Play is a production that transcends Drama and Magic in that it combines the two worlds in convincing fashion. The successful magic play is considered a rare or even high form of the art in the magic world, while the addition of magical elements to a stage play are common. In general there are three types of magic plays, which were first identified in reference to Les Miracles de Notre Dame (Roman Catholic mystery plays that featured magical/miracle effects in the thirteenth century.) The three types of plays are:
(1) those in which the miracle (magic) is the climax to the plot, in which the playwright has built his tale towards the final wonder; (2) those in which the miracle (magic), while necessary to resolving the
plot, tends to be overshadowed by the secular (non magic) material.
