Ben S. A N S W E R : First, some calendrical background. The chronology that we now use to keep track of years was built upon a rather serious flaw. Created in 525 A.D. by a Greek monk named Dionysius Exiguus, this method relied on the prevailing Roman numbering system, which lacked a symbol for zero. (For that matter, the very concept of zero had yet to take root in Europe.) As a result, Dionysius began with year 1. Counting forward 1000 years from year 1, you get 1001. Another thousand years later, and you get 2001. Not So Fast Simple enough, right? Apparently not. Debate over the question has raged for centuries. In 1799 an editorial in

Number Four The Art and Meaning of Magic I have been spending a great deal of time researching, studying and thinking about two aspects of our avocation – the art of magic and the meaning of magic. As I dug into these matters, I found myself exploring "the manner with which" I perform – about how I do what I do as well as the kind of space I am creating with/for my audience. Starting with the first area of inquiry - Is Magic Art? – writers like Maskelyne, Devant, Sharpe and Nelms would argue yes, but not in all performances. These writers would contend that magic has the potential for being art. R.G. Collingwood’s thinking in his philosophical journey into aesthetics, Principles of Art , would probably state that it is a craft. While I will not labor this conclusion by citing Collingwood’s reasoning, I feel that it maps back onto the hierarchy of art proposed by Maskelyne in Our Magic and later expanded by S.H. Sharpe in

Scope and content The Scientists Collection is a miscellaneous assemblage of individual letters and small groups of correspondence of American and European scientists from the 17th through 20th centuries. The disciplines represented are varied, with significant depth in natural history, conchology, geology, and astronomy, and there are separate series for physicists (58 items, relating especially to Max Planck), and American-Russian scientific exchange prior to the Russian Revolution (46 items). The circle of Darwin and, more generally, of mid-19th century British natural historians, is also well represented in the Scientists Collection. Included in the collection are valuable letters from John Edward Gray, William Whewell, John Lubbock, and John Stevens Henslow, and there is a small set of letters from Robert Chambers, as well as a fascinating exchange between the publisher John Murray and the naturalist, Henry W. Bates, concerning publication of Bates'

The Annals of Conjuring, published serially in the pages of The Magic Wand during the period 1924-8, was a landmark in the recorded history of conjuring. It represented the most detailed and erudite work on the subject yet to appear and, even today, though later historians and writers have provided considerable additional knowledge, it still remains the most important single source of information for the student of magic history.
My own interest in the man who wrote this eclectic book was aroused by both the impressive nature of the research and the discovery that during his earlier years he had lived in Hull, the city to which I had moved from Glasgow in 1963. This interest eventually led to the writing, and publication by The Magic Circle in 1983, of my biography of Clarke, The Barrister in The Circle, almost coincidentally with the appearance of a facsimile reprint of the original text of The Annals by Magico.

Masks have been worn from time immemorial throughout the world. They are used by primitive peoples chiefly to impersonate supernatural beings or animals in religious and magical ceremonies. Particularly notable are the masks of W and central Africa; the wooden masks of the Native Americans of NW North America, which sometimes represented totemic animals; the False Face Society of the Iroquois, whose masked dancers were thought to ward off evil spirits; and the gold and turquoise-mosaic masks of Aztec warriors and priests. Masks have always been especially important in drama, and their use has been continued into modern times. They are an integral part of Japanese drama, especially of the No plays, and of Chinese temple dramas (see Asian drama ). The many masks used in ancient Greek drama represented the character being portrayed by the actor and were constructed to portray a fixed emotion such as grief or rage. Greek masks had metallic mouthpieces that enhanced the resonance of an actor's voice. The use of masks was preserved in the Roman theater, passed into the early Italian theater, and was a characteristic device of the
