11. DARRYL MASON: 'Max & Murray' - BETWEEN THE LINES
Darryl mason began writing short stories at elevenyears-old after discovering StephenKing max Murray, his debut novel, is a testament to the primal urges
http://www.thei.aust.com/isite/btl/btlrvmason.html
THERE is a line in the archetypal rock'n'roll novel that states "Reality is cold and wet ..." and for the literary doyenne of the fatalistic times in which live once termed as the "Doom Generation" it is not so much a statement but more a reality.
Darryl Mason began writing short stories at eleven-years-old after discovering Stephen King and Hunter S. Thompson and went on to immerse himself in the often grimy, squalid but always ferocious and passionate world of hard rock and metal journalism. Never one to be content to stand and watch from the sidelines, he would more likely to be found in the mosh pits, hammering out his aggression with the rest of his angry generation.
, his debut novel, is a testament to the primal urges and screams he shared in those human pits as it is a statement of everything that is wrong with the world we live in today.
, simply, is the tragic and humorous tale of two flatmates living in the decaying inner-city of Sydney's Parramatta who share a common dislike of the world and latterly of each other. For Murray, working as a journalist for a local newspaper, surviving each day with a mixture of pot and a gambling addiction is akin to purgatory: "It's bizarre the way we pack ourselves so tightly into towers of apartments, whole cities full of them. It seems so unnatural, such an uninstinctual thing to do. People get crazy when they don't have their own space. Even though you can't see those neighbours on the other side of the wall, you know they're there, just a few feet away, doing whatever; but they're there, and they're close to you."

Welcome to Max Mason House
A Residence Hall at the University of Chicago
Max Mason House
University of Chicago
1215 E. Hyde Park Blvd.
Chicago, IL 60615
Max Mason is not a conventional dormitory. Since Max Mason was previously occupied by married student couples, each room assignment has a living room, a bedroom, a kitchen (complete with refrigerator and stove), and a bathroom (including a shower and bathtub); half of the rooms have an additional breakfast nook. There are two people to each room assignment (except for one single) and at full capacity 101 students reside in the entire five floor dormitory, in addition to the Resident Heads, the Resident Assistant, and the building maintenance person and his family. Two apartments on the first floor are joined to make a lounge. There is a computer room , a study room, a weight room with a Universal gym, and a music room with two pianos. In the basement are laundry facilities, a smoking-permitted lounge, a ping pong table, two pool tables, storage lockers, bike racks, a video game and a pinball game. The House has two TVs, each equipped with cable and a VCR. The House also owns a full size microwave oven. There is no front desk. There is a 20-minute walk to campus from the dormitory, which is a mixed blessing. Instead of having proximity to campus, the students here have great access to the stores on 53rd Street, especially Mr. G's Finer Foods, Harold's Chicken Shack, Emma G's Coffeehouse, Jacob's Bagels, Dunkin' Donuts and the Video Connection. Also, some students find the time it takes to walk or bike in useful because they know that during that time they do not feel guilty about not studying or working. Shuttle buses go between the dormitory and campus every evening. The fact that Max Mason is not on campus and has no front desk, adds to the adultlike atmosphere that some students seek or find that they like.

17-Max Mason
ENGLAND We did not know if Max knew what a dream was. We assumed he had dreams because everyone seems to have dreams, even if they cannot always remember them. We were curious about Maxi's dreams, as I guess all parents are about their child's inner life. We would ask Max about his dreams though we were never sure that it was his dreams he was telling us about. Sometimes, when we asked him about what he had done at the child-minders, he would enthusiastically say, "Seaside!" The child-minder certainly had not taken Max there, but he very much wanted to go. It was the same with his dreams. When he said "Puddles", we did not know whether he had dreamt about jumping in them, or whether that was what he wanted to do next. Max is two and half years old and sleeps for a couple of hours every afternoon. Sometimes he is slow to wake. If we have to leave earlier than usual, I have to wake him up. I do this very gently because he gets quite grumpy if he is woken quickly. Recently, I had to wake him up. I got down on the floor next to the cot, where I could see his sleeping face, and started quietly talking to him, till I saw him stirring and waking up. I stopped talking as he opened his mouth and he said, very clearly: "Zebra". He opened his eyes and then there was a long pause. Finally, he said with real disappointment in his voice: "Oh . . . . . where's it gone?" HOME EMAIL BACK to Mandalas
