Maupertuis' measurements verified Newton 's predictions that the Earth would be an oblate speroid. They corrected earlier results of Cassini Maupertuis gained fame from this expedition and he was invited to Germany by Frederick the Great. After going to Berlin he accompanied the Prussian army in the field and was taken prisoner in 1741. He became a member of the Berlin Academy of Sciences in 1741 and, four years later, became its president. He held the post of president for eight years. Maupertuis published on many topics including mathematics, geography, astronomy and cosmology . In 1744 he first enunciated the Principle of Least Action and he published it in Essai de cosmologie in 1750. Maupertuis hoped that the principle might unify the laws of the universe and combined it with an attempted proof of the existence of God.

Florian Wagner: Die Entdeckung Lapplands. Die Forschungsreisen Carl von Linnés und Pierre Louis Moreau de Maupertuis' in den 1730er Jahren. PÅ SVENSKA In meinem Dissertationsprojekt im Rahmen des Graduiertenkollegs Imaginatio borealis möchte ich die Lapplandreisen Carl von Linnés (1732) und der Gruppe um Pierre Louis Moreau de Maupertuis (1736-1737) - neben einigen anderen, wie etwa der Expedition Olof Rudbecks d.y. - genauer untersuchen. Ziel ist es, die Reiseberichte im Sinne des New Historicism mit dem historischen Kontext in Beziehung zu setzen und zu interpretieren. Damit soll die Untersuchung über einen reinen Vergleich zwischen den französischen und schwedischen Texten hinausgehen, der jedoch integraler Bestandteil der Untersuchung bleiben soll. In der zweiten Hälfte des 17.Jahrhunderts wuchs das schwedische Interesse an Lappland, der nördlichen Peripherie des Reiches, deutlich an, nicht zuletzt aufgrund der Silberfunde am Nasafjäll. Doch zwei Probleme stellten sich dabei: Zum einen war man auf die Arbeitskraft der Samen angewiesen, um die logistischen Schwierigkeiten beim Erztransport bewältigen zu können. Doch der den Samen dabei auferlegten 'Zwangsarbeit' entzogen sich diese häufig durch Flucht nach Norwegen, was in militärischer Hinsicht gefährlich erschien. Zum anderen waren die Kenntnisse über Lappland bei der Administration in Stockholm äußerst begrenzt. Einen Ausweg aus dem Dilemma bot eine Kolonisation Lapplands, so daß 1673 das erste 'Lappmarksplakat' zur Kolonisation von Karl IX herausgegeben wurde, dem 1695 das zweite folgte, zusammen mit einer 'Steuerreform' für die Lappmarken. Die erhoffte Siedlungswelle blieb jedoch aus.
