JEWS WHO CREATED HOLLYWOOD LOS ANGELES - From the impoverished shtetls of Hungary, Poland and Russia, they came to America with reams of white picket fences communities where families were important, people helped each other and the little guy could make it big. What became widely accepted as the American dream was essentially forged in Hollywood by a handful of East European Jews.
The provocative feature-length documentary Hollywoodism: Jews, Movies and the American Dream was produced by two-time Emmy award-winning filmmakers Simcha Jacobovici and Elliott Halpern.
Listen to The Arts Today's host Eleanor Wachtel's conversation with the Hollywoodism's Canadian director, Simcha Jocobo-vici.
Based on Neal Gabler's controversial best-selling book, An Empire of Their Own: How the Jews Invented Hollywood , the film takes viewers on a fascinating journey through the establishment of Hollywood, the triumphs of the Golden Age of the 1920s and 1930s, the Second World War and the attack on Hollywood during the McCarthy era.

Harare - Zimbabwe's President Robert Mugabe accused the United States, Britain and other Western powers on Friday of sponsoring violent opposition protests that rocked the troubled southern African country this week. Speaking at the burial of a former cabinet minister, Mugabe said he had ordered security forces to crack down on those using violence against his government. He charged the main opposition Movement for Democratic Change with mob aggression under the guise of defending human rights. "The West pays for the violence that was perpetrated amongst our people here. They gave the money.

Griffith's Landmark Epics:
D. W. Griffith also advanced cinema by experimenting with longer film lengths, after the phenomenal success of the two-hour Italian epic Quo Vadis? (1913) , directed in Europe by Enrico Guazzoni. Griffith's response to the full-length features that were already coming over from Europe at the time was the last film he directed for Biograph. It was made over-budget and secretly produced in 1913, but not released until a year later due to concern about its uncharacteristic length. The film was the first American four-reeler, Judith of Bethulia (1914) , starring Blanche Sweet, Henry Walthall and the Gish sisters. His early epic's story was based on the Apocrypha and told about an attractive widow/martyr of ancient Bethulia who undertook to save her city under battle siege by seducing and killing the Assyrian general/conqueror. The film marked the transition point between shorter films and longer feature films, and demonstrated more of Griffith's cinematic techniques (e.g., cross-cutting of concurrent narratives). Soon afterwards due to conflict with the short-sighted Biograph over the expensive and lengthy film, he left the studio to make longer 'feature' films and joined the independent Mutual/Reliance-Majestic studio in Hollywood, California. He brought along his talented cameraman G.W. "Billy" Bitzer and other actors.
