The Karl Menger Award
The Karl Menger Award, first given in 1989, is a cash prize awarded annually by the Department of Mathematics for outstanding performance in mathematical competitions. The selection committee is appointed by the Director of Undergraduate Studies. Karl Menger (1902-1985) was a distinguished twentieth century mathematician who made major contributions to a number of areas of mathematics, including dimension theory, logic, lattice theory, differential geometry, and graph theory. Menger, who held academic positions in Europe and the United States, was widely published. The Karl Menger Award was established by a gift to Duke University from George and Eva Menger-Hammond, the daughter of Karl Menger. AWARDS AND CONTESTS
Ayer Wins Churchill Scholarship
Elizabeth Ayer '96, a math and computer science student, was one of about ten students nationwide to win the prestigious Churchill Scholarship. Elizabeth is an active member of the mathematical community, having served as the features editor for Vertices, the Duke science magazine, and co-founder of the Logic Club. She has participated in a number of research programs. She also helped create the ACES Online web page. The Churchill Scholarship is sponsored by the Winston Churchill Foundation in New York City. The winners each receive a $22,000 fellowship for one year of study at Cambridge University in England. The application process is extensive. Students must be nominated by a committee at their college. The Churchill Foundation narrows down the candidates, and finally a committee at Cambridge selects the winners. The process requires an interview and personal essay.
Two Math Students Win
Goldwater Scholarships
Tung Tran '97 and Gretta Bartels '98, both double majors in math and computer science, were awarded Barry M. Goldwater Scholarships this year. Students pursuing research careers in mathematics, natural science, and some fields of engineering are eligible to compete for these grants. The winners receive scholarships for use during their junior and senior years, worth up to $7000 per year. This year the award was given to 264 sophomores and juniors from a field of 1200. Since 1989, when the scholarship was founded, 26 Duke University students, including 10 math majors, have won this distinguished award.

Uwe Czaniera (ed.): Karl Menger: Moral,Wille und Weltgestaltung ; Frankfurt/M.: Suhrkamp 1997. Karl Menger (1902 - 1985) was a member of the famous "Vienna Circle", one of the most important philosophizing groups with regard to the development of analytic philosophy. Menger worked mainly on geometry. It is less well-known that he also published a book on ethics (published first in 1934). In the introduction I try to sketch the development of analytical ethics since the times of the "Vienna Circle". The upshot is this: Perhaps it is not possible to make mistakes in morals that are analogous to mistakes in science – in spite of that it may be possible to show that decisions for action can be characterized as rational or irrational, and that provides a basis for achieving binding results in the discussion of moral problems.

The aim of this workshop is an unorthodox "investigation" into the
logical and philosophical foundations and into the historical developments concerning the relationship between FL and AI. Special emphasis is placed upon the mathematical and philosophical contributions of Karl Menger (and perhaps other members of the Vienna Circle in the 1930th). Of special interest is the idea of *concept formation* (due to fuzzy set theory or other approaches e.g.

Vienna Circle
From the Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy , this article is an excellent introduction to the philosophy and philosophers of the Vienna Circle. Excerpt: Group of philosophers who gathered round Moritz Schlick, after his coming in Vienna in 1922. They organized a philosophical association, named Verein Ernst Mach (Ernst Mach Association). However, meetings on philosophy of science and epistemology began as early as 1907, promoted by Frank, Hahn and Neurath, who later arranged to bring Schlick at the University of Vienna. Among Vienna Circle's members were M. Schlick, R. Carnap, H. Feigl, P. Frank, K. Gödel, H. Hahn, V. Kraft, O. Neurath, F. Waismann. Also K. R. Popper and H. Kelsen had many contacts with the Vienna Circle, although they did not belong to it. At the meetings was also discussed Wittgenstein's Tractatus , and there were several meetings between Wittgenstein, Schlick, Waismann and Carnap. In 1929 Hahn, Neurath and Carnap published the manifesto of the circle:

Menger's Sponge
Menger's sponge (sometimes wrongly called Sierpinski's Sponge) is a fractal solid that can be described as follows. Take a cube, divide it into 27 = 3 x 3 x 3 smaller cubes of the same size and remove the cube in the center and the six cubes that share faces with it. You are left with the eight small corner cubes and twelve small edge cubes holding them together. Now, imagine repeating this process on each of the remaining 20 cubes. Repeat again. And again ... Menger's Sponge is named for its inventor, Austrian mathematician Karl Menger (1902-1985). For more information about fractals and Menger's Sponge, visit the following web site: Self Similar Fractals

As he was a member of the founding trinity of neo-classical economics and founder of the Austrian school of economics, his ideas ... have significantly shaped the economic thought of the twentieth century."
Max Alter , writing in , Durham,1990 "His name will be forever linked with a new explanatory principle which has revolutionised the whole field of economic theory. ... Menger belongs to those who have demolished the existing structure of a science and put it on entirely new foundations."
Joseph A Schumpeter , writing in Ten Great Economists , London, 1951 "The founder of the Austrian school of marginal analysis whose international influence was wider than that of his co-discoverers.... He was also the initiator and a major participant in the `Methodenstreit' with the German Historical School."
