Gerardus Mercator Rupelmundanus

Related Resources Cartography Map Projections Maps by Matt T. Rosenberg The Mercator projection was developed in 1569 by Gerardus Mercator as a navigation tool. Like the Peters map, the grid is rectangular and lines of latitude and longitude are all parallel. The Mercator map was designed as an aid to navigators since straight lines on the Mercator projection are loxodromes or rhumb lines representing lines of constant compass bearing perfect for "true" direction. If a navigator wishes to sail from Spain to the West Indies, all they have to do is draw a line between the two points and the navigator knows which compass direction to continually sail to reach their destination. The Mercator map has always been a poor projection for a world map yet due to its rectangular grid and shape, geographically illiterate publishers found it useful for wall maps, atlas maps, and maps in books and newspapers published by non-geographers. It became the standard map projection in the mental map of most westerners. The argument against the Mercator projection by the pro-Peters folks usually discusses its "advantage for colonial powers" by making Europe look a lot larger than it actually is on the globe.

Gerardus Mercator

The Mercator Years 1994 and 1995: a review
In 1994 it was 400th anniversary of Gerard Mercator's death, in 1995 it was the 400th anniversary of the publication of Mercator's Atlas. Exhibitions with catalogues, books, symposiums and more frivolous activities: everything was done several times. The subject Mercator had already the largest number of titles in the 1993 Bibliography of the History of Cartography of the Netherlands; in 1994, 1995, and later dozens of more or less valuable titles are added. In the personal review (published in the above mentioned journals) some clarity is created in the chaos of publications. In the article reviews are presented of the exhibitions and publications. In the annex, which is given also here, first the separate publications are listed, secondly the individual contributions in those publications are presented in a systematic way:

PROVENANCE
The Story of Mercator's Atlas of Europe
In 1996 it was again put up for auction but was withdrawn after reaching a bid of approximately $1,243,000. In May of 1997, the British Library announced that with the aid of a generous grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund, the Library had acquired the unique atlas at a reputed price of approximately $1,145,000. Currently on public display at the British Library, the atlas is now available to scholars and the public for the first time since Gerardus Mercator handed it over to his patron, who was making a grand tour of Europe with the son of William V, the Duke of Cleves, circa 1570.
Most of the history of the atlas prior to its rediscovery in 1967 is lost in time. The only facts known for certain are provided on its first page. In 1771 it belonged to the Cistercian monastery of Mariawald in the duchy of Julich - some fifty miles from Mercator's home in Duisburg. In that year it was repaired, rebound, and annotated by Alan Ortmans, a monk who had taken his vows at the neighboring monastery of Grevenbroich.
The library of Mariawald was dispersed in 1797-98 when the area was under French rule, and the atlas was lost at that time. There is indication that it remained in the family of Mercator's patron, Werner von Gymnich, for many years. As for the rest, it is shrouded in mystery, but modern scholars have pieced together clues and information that help in telling its intriguing story.

53. The Mercator Projection
gerardus mercator An article by Fred Roeder in the Professional Surveyor describeswhy and how gerardus mercator developed The mercator Chart.
http://www.indstate.edu/gga/gga_cart/gecart86.htm
THE MERCATOR CHART Gerardus Mercator
Developed for navigation, the strength of the Mercator Chart is its conformality. That is, at any intersection of longitude and latitude, it maintains all angular relationships thus correct azimuths. For a navigator, then, a straight line plotted from point A to point B on the chart would represent a rhumb line. A rhumb crosses all meridians at a constant azimuth allowing the navigator to set a compass orientation and proceed forthright. On The Mercator Chart a rhumb is always a straight line, whereas the corresponding great circle is a curved line (unlike the Gnomonic where the converse is true). Tissot's Indicatrix indicates numerically the property of conformality. Thus it is that The Mercator Chart is not a good map for global viewing (a better one for viewing might be Gall's ) but excellent for navigation. An article by Fred Roeder in the Professional Surveyor describes why and how Gerardus Mercator developed The Mercator Chart.

Gerardus Mercator

Gerhard Kremer - alias Gerardus Mercator

According to Walter Ghim, Theatrum, in a very large quantity, to his great gain in riches and fortunes, before Mercator would publish his aforesaid smaller maps. Whether out of deference to his friend Ortelius or out of a scrupulous desire to create the best product possible, it was another fifteen years before the first part of his collection of modern maps appeared. Atlas Theatrum and its importance for the history of the genre. Ortelius was first and foremost a map dealer and publisher. His technique of atlas construction was to take the best existing maps from his large stock, have them reengraved to a uniform page size, and publish them in book form. This policy made for a rapid assembly of maps but resulted in great variation in the quality, reliability, contents, and appearance of the maps chosen. Indeed, Ortelius was known to include two quite different depictions of a region in the same atlas, on the theory that the map reader might be well served by having a variety of options. Mercator, on the other hand, was the sole author of his maps. He gathered his information from a variety of sources, including other maps, the accounts of geographers and travelers, and first-hand observations, but he alone made the ultimate decisions about what to include on the maps, where to place it, and how to relate the maps to other maps in the collection. Gerardus Mercator
