MERCATOR'S MAPS
by John H. Lienhard
Click here for audio of Episode 885. Today, let's meet the greatest mapmaker. The University of Houston's College of Engineering presents this series about the machines that make our civilization run, and the people whose ingenuity created them. G erardus Mercator was born Gerhard Kremer in the Netherlands in 1512. He Latinized his name when he entered the University. A new visual world was opening like a flower around Mercator. Ships came back from the Americas with stories and drawings of a wondrous new land. All that information fed the Renaissance belief that you learn by looking closely and critically at the external world. In a hundred years that new visual sense would give birth to modern experimental science. But now Mercator studied theology along with mathematics, astronomy, and geography. Then he began creating his own pictures his own maps of the world around him. When he was 25 he published a map of Palestine. Then he surveyed and mapped Flanders. In 1541 he made a globe of the world for the emperor. He was also hip deep in reformation theology. When authorities rounded up suspected Lutherans, they took in Mercator. The ones who recanted were to be mercifully beheaded or maybe buried alive. The rest were to be burned at the stake. Mercator's parish priest interceded to save his life. After that Mercator shut up about religion and took work as a cosmographer in Germany.

Gerardus Mercator
Born: 5 March 1512 in Rupelmonde, Flanders (now Belgium)
Died: 2 Dec 1594 in Duisburg, Duchy of Cleve (now Germany)
Show birthplace location Gerardus Mercator 's original name was Gerard de Cremere. He was educated at 'sHertogenbosch in the Netherlands, then, in 1530, he entered the University of Louvain where he studied the humanities and philosophy. He graduated from Louvain with an M.A. in 1532. After graduating, Mercator began to have worries on how to reconcile the account of the origin of the universe given in the Bible with that given by Aristotle . He travelled to a number of places while going through this personal crisis including Antwerp and Mechelen. His travels did little for his religious worries but gave him a deep interest in geography. Mercator returned to Louvain where he now studied mathematics under Gemma Frisius In 1535-1536 Mercator working in Louvain with Myrica and with Frisius constructed a terrestrial globe. In 1537 they constructed a globe of the stars. Mercator produced a map of Palestine (1537), a map of the world with a new projection (1538) and a map of Flanders (1540). Mercator was charged with heresy in 1544. This was partly due to his Protestant beliefs, partly due to the fact that he travelled so widely to acquire data for his maps that suspicions were aroused. He spent seven months in prison. He was released, mainly due to strong support from the University of Louvain, and in 1552 he moved to Duisburg where he opened a cartographic workshop.

Frequently Asked Questions about the Mercator Web Crawler
What is a "web crawler"?
A web crawler is a program that systematically fetches web pages. Web crawlers are also referred to as robots, spiders, worms, or wanderers. A web crawler works by fetching a seed page, then fetching all the pages this seed page points to, then fetching all the pages those pages point to, and so on. To learn more about web crawlers, refer to Martijn Koster's web robots pages
Why did you choose the name "Mercator"?
Gerardus Mercator , 1512-1594. Flemish cartographer whose most important innovation was a map, later known as the Mercator projection, on which parallels and meridians are rendered as straight lines spaced so as to produce at any point an accurate ratio of latitude to longitude. Mercator also introduced the term atlas for a collection of maps. Our crawler, like the famous cartographer, aims at producing ``maps'' of the known (virtual) world that accurately depict its dimensions.
How can I be sure that you will not overload my web server?
Mercator is designed to fetch only one document at a time from any given host. In other words, it will not attempt to fetch multiple documents in parallel. So, Mercator places about the same load on your system that a (speed-reading) human web surfer would.

Mercator's Projection
The Mercator projection was invented by Gerardus Mercator, a Flemish mapmaker. This is his famous world map of 1569.
A modern Mercator projection map
The property of the Mercator projection map that made it useful to navigators is that it preserves angles. Lines of constant compass heading (called rhumb lines by sailors) are straight lines on this map. Say you're in Vancouver and want to get to Hawaii. You don't have GPS, just a compass. Just draw a straight line on the map between where you are and where you want to go, and measure the angle (almost exactly 45 degrees in this case). So (after a small detour around Vancouver Island) you head southwest, and off you go. If you keep heading in this direction, you ought to get there. Earlier maps were drawn on a simple grid: each degree of latitude or longitude is the same size. This method wouldn't work there: rhumb lines would be curves. Mercator knew that to give his map this desirable property, he had to make the lines of latitude farther apart as you go away from the equator. But he didn't say exactly how he did it. He almost certainly didn't have a formula, but might have done it using approximate measurements on a globe. He just said It is for these reasons that we have progressively increased the degrees of latitude towards each pole in proportion to the lengthening of the parallels with reference to the equator.

D. Orteli. Duysburgi 8 Aug. 1579.
