Classroom instruction is combined with computer assisted learning and offered mornings, afternoons and evenings all year long. Placement and assessment for credit and noncredit ESL and bilingual (Spanish/English) courses are available through ELI. The combination of support services such as financial aid, personal and career counseling, and academic advisement allows students to prepare themselves for employment or job training. Many ELI students go on to complete associate degrees and transfer to four-year colleges. Bilingual Instruction

News From The State Senate January 24, 2003 SENATE VOTES TO ELIMINATE POET LAUREATE POST BY TOM HESTER
After a long and passionate debate, the state Senate yesterday voted to eliminate the job of state poet laureate in order to remove Amiri Baraka from the post because of a poem that critics contend is anti-Semitic. Seven Democrats spoke out against the bill, denouncing it as a violation of free speech. Two other Democrats and two Republicans took the floor to declare Baraka an embarrassment to the state and his poem racist. The bill passed 21-0. Thirteen Republicans and eight Democrats supported the measure; the rest of the senators abstained. The bill now goes to the Assembly, where there is no guarantee any action will be taken. Assembly Speaker Albio Sires (D-Hudson) declined to say yesterday whether the Democratic-controlled house would take up the issue.

MERCER
Real name: David James Mercer Occupation: British Intelligence Operative Place of Birth: Bristol, UK Height: 5' 11"
Weight: 179 lbs Eyes: Green Hair: Dark Brown Age:
BACKGROUND:
Two weeks off his 18th birthday he signed up with the Royal Air Force. The training was hard and tedious, too tedious to detail at length. With a mixture of natural aptitude and a bit of back scratching he was able to make the grade and even make it to becoming an officer. After a number of years with the RAF he was sent to Kazakhstan to assist the local regime by bombing opium plantations. During a run-of-the-mill mission the ground shifted by about 50 foot and Mercer and his navigator smashed into the side of a mountain, Mercer able to bale out at the last second, but his comrade, Rogers, killed.
Eventually Mercer was released and not expected to survive, Preiskin's family were low on food but not ruthless enough to kill Mercer themselves. They let him go, thinking he would in the mountainous passes. He could barely walk, had lost three stone of body weight, most of his hair and the feeling in his left hand. He eventually stumbled across a Russian patrol, and with relations being on good terms at the time, was exchanged back to Britain for treatment. His history after this is unknown, but it is assumed he was recruited for British Intelligence, primarily for his knowledge on mutants, and has since been given a mission to research into possible uses of mutants in strategic national defence and military operations.

http://www.geocities.com/jone6179/Brian12.htm
Hughes, (James Mercer) Langston (1902-1967), American writer, known for the use of jazz and black folk rhythms in his poetry. Born in Joplin, Missouri, and educated at Lincoln University in Pennsylvania, Hughes published his first poem, "The Negro Speaks of Rivers," in Crisis magazine in 1921. He studied at Columbia University from 1921 to 1922 before serving on a ship to Africa. He then worked for a time in Paris. After his return to the United States, he worked as a busboy in Washington, D.C. There, in 1925, his literary skills were discovered after he left three of his poems beside the plate of American poet Vachel Lindsay, who recognized Hughes's abilities and subsequently helped to publicize Hughes's work.
Hughes wrote in many genres, but he is best known for his poetry, in which he disregarded classical forms in favor of musical rhythms and the oral and improvisatory traditions of black culture. In the 1920s he was a prominent figure during the Harlem Renaissance (see Blacks in the Americas: The Harlem Renaissance) and was referred to as the Poet Laureate of Harlem (New York City). His innovations in form and voice influenced many black writers. Hughes also wrote the drama Mulatto (1935), which was performed on Broadway 373 times. Hughes traveled to the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, Haiti, and Japan. He served as the Madrid correspondent for a Baltimore, Maryland, newspaper during the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939). Beginning in the 1930s, Hughes was active in social and political causes and used much of his poetry as a vehicle for social protest.
