Winifred Edgerton Merrill
September 24, 1862 - September 6, 1951 In 1887 Edgerton married Frederick Merrill, an 1885 graduate of Columbia who received his Ph.D. from Columbia in 1890. He served as the New York State geologist from 1899 to 1904 and as the director of the New York State Museum before his death in 1916. Merrill taught mathematics at various institutions for several years after her graduation from Columbia. She had been offered a position as professor of mathematics at Wellesley, but declined because of her impending marriage. In 1906 she founded the Oaksmere School for Girls which she directed until 1928. It became well known for its high scholastic standards. A branch of the school was established in Paris in 1912. In 1928 Merrill discontinued the school and moved to New York City. She wrote many articles on education for journals and was a popular speaker of educational topics. She served for some years as alumna trustee of Wellesley College. In her papers on Winifred Merrill, Mary Williams quotes the following letter that appeared on September 20, 1951, in The New York Times shortly after Merrill's death: All those interested in educational progress owe a debt of gratitude to the late Mrs. Winifred Edgerton Merrill...one of the group of five who submitted the first proposal for a woman's college affiliated with Columbia University....Earlier Mrs. Merrill herself received the first Columbia University degree ever granted to a woman, earned with highest honors in the "masculine" field of mathematics and astronomy....I treasure an unforgettable memory of her keen mind and gallant spirit, her graciousness, and her kindling interest in current events. Though almost eighty years at the time, her eyes were on the future, and she was much more interested in the progress of women in business and the professions than in the old battle for their higher education, in which she played so notable a part.

Winifred Edgerton Merrill made a vast impact on the male orientated world of mathematics. She left behind the Victorian ideal that a wellborn woman should stay at home, and went about continuing her education in mathematics to Ph.D. level. This was a fantastic achievement and Merrill became the first American woman to obtain a Ph.D. in mathematics. Her determination to obtain graduate education is an example that many have followed since. Merrill was born on 24 September 1862 in Ripon, Wisconsin. Nothing is known of her parents, but it can be assumed they were financially stable, as private tutors provided Merrill's early education. In 1883 she graduated with a B.A. degree from Wellesley College, Wellesley, Massachusetts. After working at Harvard, in 1884 Merrill applied, to Columbia University, in New York, to be allowed to study mathematics and astronomy. Up until this time Columbia University was an institute for men only and due to this was the case Merrill's initial request was refused. However, with the support and advice of Frederick A P Barnard, the 10th president of Columbia University who was a campaigner for women's education, Merrill visited each trustee individually to plead her case. She argued the points that to be able to study astronomy Merrill needed a telescope and only Columbia University had one and also that the Professor of Astronomy required an assistant at the time. At the next meeting of the trustees, they voted to allow Merrill to pursue her studies individually. Her work in the field of mathematical astronomy included in 1883 the computation of the orbit of a comet. On completion of the required credits, and having written an original thesis that:-

First Woman to Receive a Ph.D. in Mathematics
  • Born on September 24, 1862 in Ripon, Wisconsin. Tutored for all of her early education. In 1883 she graduated with a B.A. from Wellesley College in Wellesley, Massachusetts. Went on to work at Harvard, then in 1884 she applied to Columbia in New York. Columbia was strictly male at this time so Winifred spoke with each trustee, at the advice of the president of Columbia who supported women, and was allowed entrance. She had fulfilled all the requirements, including writing an original thesis, so at the end of her second year she applied for her Ph.D. Once again she was forced to speak with all of the trustees and at the next meeting they unanimously voted to award her a Ph.D. Therefore in 1886 Winifred became the first woman to receive a Ph.D. in Mathematics and she even received it cum laude.
Family Life and Careers
  • In 1887 Winifred married Frederick Merrill, an 1885 graduate from Columbia who also received his Ph.D. there in 1890.

Willis Newton Merrill Willis Newton Merrill Willis Newton Merrill(9), Willis Perry Merrill(8), Noel(7), Cyrenus(6), Aaron(5), Cyprian(4), John(3), John(2), Nathaniel(1), was born in Woodfords, California on May 5th 1869 and died September 20, 1941 in Lodi California. He was the eldest of the four children of Willis Perry Merrill and Henrietta Kittridge. Willis N. Merrill attended the district school at Woodfords and later went to Placerville where he graduated from high school, after which he assisted his father in his store in Woodfords and worked as a cowboy in the Lake Tahoe-Woodfords area. It was then that he became associated with the Chambers brothers, Myron and Bryon. Later on his daughter Shirley would marry Byron's son William Byron Chanbers. His marriage in 1899 united him with Miss Jessie Bella Wilkerson, daughter of Robert T. Wilkerson and Charolette C. Beil, natives of Missouri and Indiana respectively, with Robert coming to California as a young boy. After his marriage Willis removed to Reno where he and his father-in-law purchased 400 acres of land, which he successfully farmed for nine years. It was in Reno where five of his eight children were born. Roy Willis Merrill(10), 1900-1957, Verla Jessie Merrill, 1901, Rita Geraldine Merrill, 1905-1990, Shirley Nevada Merrill, 1907 and Mildred Charolette Merrill, 1910. Willis then sold his Nevada property when he and his wife decided that Reno was not the place to raise a family and moved to Oregon where the family stayed for two years. In those two years he lost almost everything they had due to one of the severest winters ever in Oregon. In 1912 he came back to California where he and his family settled in the Henderson district of San Joaquin County, south-west of Lodi where he and his father-in-law purchased 160 acres of land and engaged in general farming.
