21. WINIFRED EDGERTON
winifred Edgerton merrill bore four children, taught school, and in 1906founded the Oaksmere School for girls, which she ran for twenty years.

WINIFRED EDGERTON (1863 - September 6, 1951) , the first woman to earn a doctorate at Columbia University and an early supporter of Barnard College, was born in Ripon, Wisconsin and later moved with her family to New York City. In 1883, after graduating from Wellesley College, where she had demonstrated exceptional ability in mathematics and astronomy, she came home to New York to live with her parents. She did some work for the Harvard Observatory, making an independent calculation of the orbit of a comet from data that Harvard furnished and tried to find a way to pursue graduate education. Through Melvil Dewey (of the famed Dewey Decimal System), who had just moved from
Winifred Edgerton, 1883
Wellesley Archives Wellesley to serve as Columbia's librarian, she met Columbia President F. A. P. Barnard, who was then trying to open Columbia to women. Barnard urged Edgerton to apply to do graduate work and, when the Columbia Trustees rebuffed her, suggested that she visit the trustees individually to plead her case. Eventually she won the favor of all, including even the Reverend Morgan Dix, who in addition to serving as a trustee was the rector of Trinity Church. Dix vigorously opposed opening Columbia College to women, but he came to see that Winifred Edgerton was a special case. She was not applying to the College but rather to the graduate school., and her talent and seriousness of purpose were immediately apparent. She needed a telescope (only Columbia had one in those days), and the professor of astronomy needed an assistant. And since her family worshipped at Trinity Church, Dr. Dix was assured of her good character. Believing that no precedent would be set, the trustees voted to allow Miss Edgerton to pursue her studies.

She later attended Michigan State Normal College in Ypsilanti and even taught in Colorado and Pontiac, Michigan. Soon she returned to Saint Johns and resumed her local teaching career. Her specialty was junior high school history. When she retired from teaching, she was the principal of Central School.
"Everybody knows how old I am," Miss Barrington had said at the time of her retirement in July, 1950. "Just don't describe me as 'the aged librarian.'"

Street Map THE ENGLISH-SPEAKING UNION The Page Memorial Library The Winifred Nerney Collection Winifred Nerney was secretary to Arnold Bennett for many years, and after his death she became the London literary representative for the American publishers Doubleday. On her death in 1964 some of her friends decided that a fitting memorial both to her involvement with the literary world and her Anglo-American links would be a collection of "biographies and autobiographies of bookmen - writers of every category - who write in the English language and whose work (at least part of it) was published between 1900 and 1964". These books were chosen by Frank Swinnerton and Thomas B Costain and two identical sets were brought together - one to the ESU in London and one to New York. These books may be borrowed or consulted by ESU members, but as they are housed in the Small Drawing Room at Dartmouth House (often in use for meetings and functions) please check in advance that they will be accessible.

Woodfords Merrills Willis Perry Merrill Willis Perry Merrill(8), Noel(7), Cyrenus(6), Aaron(5), Cyprian(4), John(3), John(2), Nathaniel(1), was born in Westport, New York October 5 1835 and died September 7, 1899, in Woodfords, California, was the eldest of the six children of Noel Merrill and Parmelia Cole of Westport, New York. Noel Merrill was a descendent of Nathaniel Merrill, who along with his brother John, immigrated to New England in 1635 and settled in Newbury, Massachusetts. Parmelia Cole was a descendent of James Cole of Plymouth Colony, Massachusetts, and has lineage to the Royal Families of the British Isles and Europe. Willis P. Merrill came to the gold fields of California from Vermont in early 1853 and settled in Dogtown, which is now Marysville, California. Willis did very little mining, instead he found more of a fortune in carrying supplies to the various camps and settlements from the navigation head of the Yuba River in Northern California, through the Mother Lode and eventually into Nevada. When Willis came to California he brought his trade with him. Descending from a family of weavers and tanners, Willis brought with him, by ship around the horn, a woolen mill given to him by his uncle, Prosper Merrill(7), Cyrenus(6), Aaron(5), Cyprian(4), John(3), John(2), Nathaniel(1), of Vermont. Coming to California with Willis, via the Isthmus of Panama, was a companion that is speculated by some Merrill Family researchers to be Hiram Seeley Cole, Willis's uncle. However, buried at the Woodfords Pioneer Cemetery is the grave of a James Havrey Cole, 1834-1924, who would have been about the same age as Willis. It has not been ascertained if he is from the same Cole family or not.
