(.6 cu. ft.)
Historical Note
As far as is known, the first university publications, the catalogs, were originally prepared by the president. A catalog committee is first listed in that publication in 1891/1892. In 1900 it becomes the Publications Committee. In 1906, Professor Samuel B. Harding, "who has done this work without compensation in the past," was, on the recommendation of President Bryan, appointed by the Trustees as the first editor of University Publications. Ivy L. Chamness was appointed assistant editor in 1914. She became editor in 1917, a position she held until her retirement in 1952.
Scope and Content Note
Consists largely of material relating to the preparation of books on the history of Indiana University published by the university, including: for Burton Myers' volumemanuscripts of chapters written by those other than Dr. Myers, both used and unused, extensive revisions suggested by ILC, photo lists, and some correspondence about publication and distribution; for James A. Woodburn's volumeedited copy and advertising copy. Additionally, there are some notes and correspondence for a book on gifts to the university (never published) and correspondence regarding reunions held by the class of 1906 (ILC's graduating class) in 1931 and 1933.

Biographical Note
William Julian Bryan was born 11 November 1860 in Monroe County to John Bryan, a Presbyterian minister, and Eliza Jane Phillips Bryan. After attending the public schools in the county, Bryan entered the Preparatory Department of Indiana University in 1877. While a student a IU, he was active in many activities, including the university baseball team (where he earned his letter) and the student newspaper, The Daily Student. He graduated in 1884 with a degree in ancient classics. Following graduation, he was appointed English instructor in the Preparatory Department. Within a few months he was invited to join the faculty of the Greek Department and in 1885 he was named Associate Professor of Philosophy. Bryan continued his studies and in 1886 he received his Master's degree in Philosophy. His interests shifted to psychology, however, and from 1886-1887 he went to Germany to study at the University of Berlin. When he returned he was named full professor and granted money to conduct research on human reaction times. Bryan opened the Indiana University Psychological Laboratory in January 1888. In 1891, Bryan decided to study under G. Stanley Hall at Clark University and received his PhD in psychology in 1892. Bryan went on to become a leader in the movement for the scientific study of children. Upon returning to IU after his studies with Hall, he was appointed Vice- President of the University. In 1902 he was named the tenth President of the University. Bryan oversaw the development of the institution for 35 years. During his tenure the schools of medicine, education, nursing, business, music, and dentistry were established, in addition to many graduate programs and several satellite campuses throughout the state. During his presidency, the university grew from 1,335 students and 65 faculty members to 7,005 students and 330 faculty members.

Foreword
Andover Maine Obituaries
Obituaries are an excellent source of historical and genealogical information about the deceased, his or her family, and the town in general. We have included all the obituaries we have been able to find for anyone who was born in, lived in, died in, was buried in, or otherwise had a close connection to Andover Maine Most of the obituaries came from scrapbooks kept by local residents and institutions, including Dot Campbell, Gertie Smith, Rena Spidell, Ruth Spidell, the Andover Historical Society, the Bethel Historical Society, Rumford Public Library and the Andover First Congregational Church. We have also received some obituaries from relatives or descendants of the deceased. We give a big “thank you” everyone who has helped us with this project. Whenever possible, we have cited the newspaper in which the obituary appeared and the publication date. However, because most of the obituaries were clipped out of newspapers many years ago without any identification, we are not able to cite the source other than "an unidentified and undated local newspaper." But, we believe that most of the obituaries came from the Rumford Falls Times, Bethel Citizen, Lewiston Daily Sun or Norway Advertiser Democrat. In fact, many obituaries appeared in several of these newspapers. The general rule is that an obituary is published as soon after death as possible, which means within a day or two for daily publications and a week or two for weekly publications. We have included the maiden name and prior married name of married women in parentheses (

MATH GIRLS CAN DO ANYTHING! Hey girls! This means high performance in math! Check out this website for a report that gives some insight into how and why girls’ math confidence and performance are being undermined. http://www.inform.umd.edu/UMS+State/UMD-projects/MCTP/eSSAYS/wOMENaNDmATH.TXT The report, by Jennifer Gutbezahl , indicates that the differences between females’ and males’ performance in math is actually very small and is diminishing over time. This means that the future is bright and waiting for you to embrace it Believe in yourself! The following brief is an example of a woman who believed in her self and said, “Yes, I can!” This was a time when the male-based scientific community was trying to “prove” that women were incapable of true excellence and that their role in discovery could only be a supportive one because their achievements were mediocre. Introduction
For my research, I chose 20 women, all born in the United States of America, who earned their first college degree (usually a Bachelor's) before 1900. I chose these women primarily because the period prior to 1900 was a challenging time for women wishing to study mathematics in the United States. By 1900, women could more easily enroll in colleges or universities. "A woman who wished to study science in 1900 could find both undergraduate and graduate training of a high order" (Rossiter 1982, 320). Unfortu nately, there is a dearth of information on women studying mathematics earlier than the 1860s, so my study is limited to the period between 1866 and 1900.
