Marin Mersenne attended school at the College of Mans, then, from 1604 spent five years in the Jesuit College at La Fleche. From 1609 to 1611 he studied theology at the Sorbonne. Mersenne joined the religious order of the Minims in 1611. The name of the order comes since the Minims regard themselves as the least (minimi) of all the religious; they devote themselves to prayer, study and scholarship. Mersenne continued his education within the order at Nigeon and then at Meaux. He returned to Paris where in 1612 he became a priest at the Place Royale. He taught philosophy at the Minim convent at Nevers from 1614 to 1618. In 1619 he returned again to Paris to the Minims de l'Annociade near Place Royale. His cell in Paris became a meeting place for Fermat Pascal Gassendi Roberval ... Beaugrand and others who later became the core of the French Academy. Mersenne corresponded with other eminent mathematicians and he played a major role in communicating mathematical knowledge throughout Europe at a time when there were no scientific journals.

Schooling: Paris
Mersenne began his grammar studies at the College of Mans. He entered the new Jesuit college at La Fleche in 1604 and remained there until 1609. In the next two years he studied theology at the Sorbonne. There is no mention of a degree, but it seems quite impossible not to say that he had the equivalent of a B.A.
There is no word about how the studies of the son of a laborer were financed. It appears that the Jesuits supported him at La Fleche. There is no word about the two years of study in Paris. I suspect that he entered the Minims as a means to further education and an intellectual life (as, for example, Coronelli later did), but that still leaves the two years unaccounted for. He didn't live on air.

(4 December 1996) Mersenne was a Minim friar. Minims are not Jesuits. He was, however, educated by the Jesuits. Furthermore, Mersenne was not an Inquisitor. Indeed, he was probably quite a pleasant fellow. Please read these enlightening and scholarly emails that I received. (Learn the fate of his old residence!)
    Who was Marin Mersenne?
You are probably visiting here because of an interest in Mersenne Primes. It was not until the mid 20th century that Mersenne became known primarily for his Prime Number Conjecture. Historically, he was much better known for his correspondence with leading scientists of the day (hence the other Mersenne Mailing List ). Interested in optics, he also been called (no pun intended) the Father of Acoustics. Here are some links that will tell you something about the man himself: a nice biography (and another picture!) courtesy of the Algebra Group WWW Server of the University of St. Andrews, Scotland. 1. Early History
Many early writers felt that the numbers of the form 2 n -1 were prime for all primes n , but in 1536 Hudalricus Regius showed that 2 -1 = 2047 was not prime (it is 23 89). By 1603 Pietro Cataldi had correctly verified that 2 -1 and 2 -1 were both prime, but then incorrectly stated 2 n -1 was also prime for 23, 29, 31 and 37. In 1640 Fermat showed Cataldi was wrong about 23 and 37; then Euler in 1738 showed Cataldi was also wrong about 29. Sometime later Euler showed Cataldi's assertion about 31 was correct. Enter French monk Marin Mersenne (1588-1648). Mersenne stated in the preface to his Cogitata Physica-Mathematica (1644) that the numbers 2 n -1 were prime for n 31, 67, 127 and 257

    I protagonisti

    Marin Mersenne.

The main characters

    Marin Mersenne.

Mersenne's scientific contributions span a wide range of interests, ranging from biblical exegesis to philosophy, from mechanics to musical theory and acoustics, from geometry to optics, from pneumatics to linguistics. At another level, beyond the specific results of these intense research activities, Mersenne performed a particularly important role in organising European culture of the time. Among those who came to his convent cell or who entered into close correspondence with him, we find, amongst others, Peiresc, Gassendi, Descartes, Roberval, Beeckman, van Helmont, Fermat, Hobbes, Pascal and Baliani. The French Minim favoured contact between savants , putting them in touch with each other, and promoting debate and scientific cooperation. In the informal role of secretary of the republic of letters, he nursed the plan to establish a European scientific academy.
Mersenne participated actively in the debates on the problem of the vacuum, above all during and after his trip to Italy in 1644. He then had the opportunity to assist some barometrical experiments, and discuss with the main players in the Italian scientific movement. He then disseminated their findings in France.

    http://aux.planetmath.org/doc/autolinking.html
    PlanetMath Automatic Reference Linking
    Motivation
The PlanetMath encyclopedia is a "semantic network" of sorts. It is a set of concepts (entries in the encyclopedia) whose meanings depend, not only on the content of the entries, but on the position in the network (the connections to other entries.) This is of course the case because known mathematics represents one big semantic network. It is possible to understand portions of it that are only "linked" to each other and derive meanings from each other, but overall the entire "network" is connected and one must be able to move throughout the network to understand any given "node" (concept). Because mathematics is like this, it is supremely important that users of PlanetMath are able to jump to requisite concepts in the network in order to understand the current one, all the way down to the concepts that are so simple they are evident to the intuition. However, there are so many of these connections that is is too much to ask for authors of entries to do the linking themselves. Not only is it too much work, but the authors just may not be aware of which requisite concepts are already defined on PlanetMath. To solve this problem, PlanetMath implements automatic reference linking between entries in the encyclopedia. In essence, when an entry is "rendered" for display, the text is broken down and scanned for words that invoke entries that have been defined already. These words are then turned into hyperlinks. Doing this automatically almost completely frees the author from having to think about links, however, it is not completely infallible. Because of this, the user can ultimately override the automatic linking, or create their own original linking (see
