Marin Mersenne Nasceu em Maine , perto de Oise-Paris , matemático francês, filósofo e teólogo, foi pioneiro na tentativa de descobrir uma fórmula que representasse todos os números primos, apesar dos números de Mersenne representarem apenas alguns destes, a sua fórmula inspirou grandes avanços na Teoria dos números. Em 1611, Mersenne juntou-se à ordem católica, romana e mendicante de S. Francisco de Paula, em Paris, e de 1614 a 1619 ensinou filosofia no convento desta ordem, em Nevers . Oponente ardente das doutrinas místicas, alquimia, astrologia e outras artes arcaicas relacionadas, apoiou a ciência de forma vigorosa, defendendo a filosofia de René Descartes e as teorias astronómicas de Galileu. Consegue um lugar no convento de L’Annonciade , Paris onde leccionou filosofia e em 1620 viajou por toda a Europa Ocidental. Em 1644, propôs a fórmula 2^ p -1, onde p, é primo, que gera os chamados números de Mersenne. Apesar dele não ansiar com a mesma a descoberta de novos primos, ela tem sido objecto de estudo no calculo destes. Mersenne foi um importante elo de ligação na comunicação entre filósofos e cientistas por toda a Europa já que na altura não existia nenhum jornal cientifico, o que dificultava quem trabalhasse uma vida inteira ignorando a existência das descobertas já feitas. Mersenne encontrou-se e correspondeu-se com figuras importantes como Descartes, Girard Desargues, Pierre Fermat, Blaise Pascal e Galileu, e dizia-se “Informar Mersenne duma descoberta, significava publicá-la por toda a Europa”.

Na Igreja, Mersenne desenvolveu em relação à ciência, da qual era ardente defensor, um ver­dadeiro trabalho de escriturário. Defendeu as teorias de Descartes contra ‘as críticas do cle­ro, traduziu algumas das obras de Galileu e também defendeu-o. Mersenne prestou à ciência um serviço pouco comum: canalizou as idéias de sua épo­ca. No século xvii, isto é, muito antes do advento das publicações científicas, das con­ferências internacionais, ou mesmo da funda­ção de academias científicas, Mersenne tornou-se um traço de união entre os cientis­tas europeus.
