Related Links Dr. Patricia Wright Dr. Patricia Wright received her Ph.D. in Anthropology from the City University of New York in 1985 for her dissertation entitled "Costs and Benefits of Nocturnality for the Night Monkey (Aotus)". In 1986, Dr. Wright and colleagues discovered a new species of lemur, the golden bamboo lemur (Hapalemur aureus). This discovery led to the establishment of Ranomafana National Park in 1991, a 43,500 hectare reserve and Madagascar's third national park. Since 1987, Ranomafana National Park has been the site of an integrated conservation and development project which is focused on the protection and conservation of local flora and fauna as well as rural development, education, and promotion of health services in the park's peripheral zone. Dr. Wright is currently a professor in the Department of Anthropology at the State University of New York at Stony Brook. In addition, Dr. Wright has served as the Executive Director for the Institute for the Conservation of Tropical Environments (ICTE) since 1992 and as the International Coordinator for the Ranomafana National Park Project (RNPP) in Madagascar since 1987. In 1989, she became a MacArthur Fellow awarded from the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, and she was awarded the "Chevalier d'Ordre National" (National Medal of Honor of Madagascar) from the President of Madagascar in 1995.

ACQUISITION: The Robert MacDowell Collection was given to the University of New Hampshire by Professor Robert Manton in 1984. Requests for permission to publish material from this collection should be discussed with the Special Collections Librarian. BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE: Edward Alexander MacDowell (1860-1908) was the first American composer to achieve international recognition. Born in New York City in 1860, MacDowell studied music as a child and travelled to France at the age of 15 to begin a nine year residence in Europe. He returned to the United States in June of 1884 to marry Marian Nevins. Praised for his compositions as well as for his piano playing ability, MacDowell was a popular figure throughout the late 1880s and early 1890s. In fact, he was described by some of his contemporaries as "the greatest musical genius America has produced. In 1896, Columbia University offered MacDowell a job as as Professor of Music and he taught there for eight years, resigning in 1904 due to philosophical disagreements with the faculty. By 1905, MacDowell suffered from what was diagnosed as "nervous exhaustion," an ailment that resulted in complete "cerebral collapse." He died in 1908 at the age of forty-six.

    Propithecus diadema edwardsi
    Identification
Propithecus diadema edwardsi is one of the largest lemurs in Madagascar (and the largest lemur at RNP). The fur is mostly black (or dark brown) with one large white patch on its lower back, that extends to its sides like a saddle.
    Propithecus diadema edwardsi at RNP
There are at least four P. diadema edwardsi groups in the Talatakely Trail System at RNP, some of which have been followed since 1986 by Patricia Wright and her guides. The following data are mostly from her work ( Wright 1995 ), and from Claire Hemingway's study at Vato ( Hemingway, 1995 Group II's territory includes the research station and consists of GO (Green Orange) breeding female; P (Pink) breeding male and their offspring. Group I is adjacent and most often seen by tourists. TS (Teal Silver) is the breeding female; R (Red) is a twenty old male; YS (Yellow Silver), B (Brown) are younger males in the group.
