From Kirkus Reviews , March 15, 1992
More like a ``second'' than a ``first book of poems,'' this large, generously illustrated volume will serve children from preschool through much of their elementary years. The Kennedys' combined experience as poet, educators, and writers is evident in the variety and depth of the selections here, topically grouped (``Play,'' ``Birds, Bugs, and Beasts,'' etc.) and ranging from the classical (Stevenson and Lear) through folk rhymes and songs to a good assortment of more recent poets (Langston Hughes, David McCord, N. M. Bodecker). The more than 100 poems also include a nicely varied sprinkling of Ogden Nash, Emily Dickinson, Dorothy Aldis, and numerous others, all illustrated in appealing, conscientiously multiethnic watercolors with an old-fashioned flavor (several recall Jessie Wilcox Smith or the Petershams) but with some contemporary touches as well. A good addition to the poetry section that would also make a fine gift. Index. (Poetry. 3-10) From Horn Book
These poems, some humorous and some thoughtful, reach into all aspects of a young child's life. Most of the poets are familiar, including Robert Louis Stevenson, Emily Dickinson, Robert Frost, Karla Kuskin, Langston Hughes, and Gwendolyn Brooks. The illustrations are colorful and appealing. Ind.

    The Red House Mystery
    Author Info: A.A. Milne
    [Alan Alexander]
Of course it's very hampering being a detective, when you don't know anything about detecting,
and when nobody knows that you're doing detection, and you can't have people up to
cross-examine them, and you have neither the energy nor the means to make proper inquiries; and,
in short, when you're doing the whole thing in a thoroughly amateur, haphazard way.
A.A. Milne (The Red House Mystery) A.A. Milne is, of course, best remembered for his series of Winnie the Pooh tales. In addition, he wrote for the famous British humor magazine Punch, was a fine playwright and, though he served in WWI, became an outspoken pacifist. In the midst of all this, he wrote one of the classic English drawing room mysteries The Red House Mystery . The book ends on a note which seems to imply that further adventures will follow, but sadly none did. The Red House is a British manor, home to Mark Ablett, and gathering place for his fun loving friends. But the bucolic setting is disrupted when Ablett's long lost brother, black sheep of the family, is murdered and Mark goes missing. Two guests, Antony Gillingham, a sort of Holmsian jack of all trades, and Bill Beverley, a mildly dense Watson-like sidekick, take it upon themselves to solve the crime. What follows is a reasonably dated but still amusing "intuitive" mystery. Raymond Chandler apparently went out of his way to attack the story as one of the worst examples of the genre, wholly lacking in genuine criminological methodology and requiring enormous intuitive leaps on the part of the "detectives". Still, take it for what it is and it offers a pleasant enough reading experience.

T he REAL Winnie-the-Pooh won't be found on a video, in a movie, on a T-shirt or a lunchbox. Since 1987, the REAL Pooh and four of his best friendsEeyore, Piglet, Kanga, and Tiggerhave been living in the Central Children's Room at the Donnell Library Center, part of The New York Public Library. L ong before Walt Disney turned Pooh and his pals into movie stars, Christopher Robin Milne, a very real little boy living in England, received a small stuffed bear on his first birthday. He named him Edward Bear (later renamed Winnie-the-Pooh). Following Edward came the rest of the stuffed animals, which Christopher loved and played with throughout his childhood. O ne day, Christopher's father, A.A. Milne, and an artist named Ernest H. Shepard, decided that these animals, and two other imaginary friends, Owl and Rabbit, would make fine characters in a bedtime story. From that day on, Pooh and his friends have had many fanciful adventures, from Piglet's encounter with a Heffalump to Eeyore's loss of his tail. These stories have been embraced by millions of children and adult readers for more than 70 years. A nyone can visit the real Winnie-the-Pooh and his pals. Every year thousands of children and their parents come to see them at the Central Children's Room in the Donnell Library Center. Surrounded by thousands of children's books, in dozens of different languages, Pooh and his friends are as happy as when they lived in the 100 Acre Wood.

    Question #65: What's Winnie-the-Pooh's Real Name?

Isn't the real name of Winnie-the-Pooh, in fact: Edward Bear?
    T. Greschke
    Answer #65:

Very good! You are referring to Christopher Robin Milne's teddy bear "Edward Bear" (the stuffed animal you see him dragging up and down the stairs in the illustrations). In the introduction to the book "Winnie-the-Pooh", author A.A. Milne writes " Well, when Edward Bear said that he would like an exciting name all to himself, Christopher Robin said at once, without stopping to think, that he was Winnie-the-Pooh. And he was.
In the same sense that Christopher Robin Milne became "Christopher Robin" in the stories, his stuffed animal, Edward Bear, became "Winnie-the-Pooh".
Question #66: What are the Words to Disney's "New Adventures of Winnie the Pooh" Theme Song?
