To expand search, see Germany in the 1800s . Laterally related topic: Karl Friedrich Gauss (1777-1855) The Mathematics and the Liberal Arts pages are intended to be a resource for student research projects and for teachers interested in using the history of mathematics in their courses. Many pages focus on ethnomathematics and in the connections between mathematics and other disciplines. The notes in these pages are intended as much to evoke ideas as to indicate what the books and articles are about. They are not intended as reviews. However, some items have been reviewed in Mathematical Reviews , published by The American Mathematical Society. When the mathematical review (MR) number and reviewer are known to the author of these pages, they are given as part of the bibliographic citation. Subscribing institutions can access the more recent MR reviews online through MathSciNet Symmetry Cult. Sci. (1994), no. 1, 312. SC: 00A69 (01A99), MR: 1 309 239. Discusses the history and philosophy of origami and then (in a little more depth) discusses some of its applications. The author discusses applications in math and science education, and also in art, design, and technology. A particularly interesting application of paper-folding and the theory of polyhedra is in music education, where one researcher devised "a 'tower' of five octahedra, to illustrate some basic concepts in musicology. His inspiration was from a work by Möbius written in 1861. Ganter's compound polyhedron illustrates geometrically the following concepts and their connections: the vertices correspond to the notes of the chromatic scale, the edges corresponds to the thirds and fifths, and the triangular faces correspond to the triads." He mentions that M. C. Escher was interesting in construction paper models (though it is not really clear how deep that interest lay). It is interesting that the well-known book by T. Sundara Row entitled

    MOBIUS, August Ferdinand

Come see how the other half thinks.
Thursday, January 09, 2003 The Truth About Rorty Yes, Even That Exists
So, in the first chapter, Rorty begins with the view that there can be no truth outside of man. In other words, big-"T" Truth can not exist unless you believe in God, that is; he does not believe there is reason to believe in Him, however (and neither do I).
"To say that truth is not out there is simply to say that where there are no sentences there is no truth, that sentences are elements of human languages, and that human languages are human creations.
"Truth cannot be out there - cannot exist independently of the human mind because sentences cannot so exist, or be out there. The world is out there, but descriptions of the world are not. Only descriptions of the world can be true or false. The world on its own unaided by the describing activities of human beings cannot." (pg. 5)
This is a very tempting argument. It is logically consistent and appears correct. There is one flaw here, however. Rorty uses two different definitions of truth. When he talks about true/false assignments applying only to sentences and descriptions, he actually means logical truth. Yes, that kind of truth applies only to sentences and descriptions. One first needs a language and any new utterance or description in that language is compared to the other ones. If that sentence is consistent with the previous ones, it is logically true. Else, it is false. Think of this in terms of mathematics. If I have already proven that the sum of squares of the lengths of the legs in a right triangle is equal to the square of the length of the hypothenuse, I can prove, given the language of arithmetic, that the length of the hypothenuse is the square root of the sum of the squares of the lengths of the legs. (Say that 10 times fast!) Are you following me?

In response to my post on the YFP blog, Bloggadder is taking my remarks to be more extreme than they actually were. I do not believe I ever said that it is inappropriate to criticize Israel if they screw up. However, it seems to me that they have acknowledged that they have screwed up and are well on their way to finding out who was responsible and punnishing them (ie: the fact they are launching an investigation into the matter). The point is that what they did shouldn't be called genocide. It's a military error, and Israel has acknowledged it as such. They should be told to be more careful in the future, something that Israel has promised to do. And now, the matter should be put to rest. 5:17 PM Keep Hope Alive

    http://www.mps.k12.nf.ca/mathematics/Grassroots/Mobius Strip/mobius3.htm
The Mobius Strip What is a Mobius Strip? In reality, The Mobius Strip is a continuous loop with only one surface and one edge which is formed by twisting one end of a long, rectangular strip 180 degrees, also known as ½ a twist, in which you attach this to its other end. In other terms, A Mobius strip or a Mobius Transformation, is a two-dimensional surface with only one side. It can also be constructed in three dimensions. The Mobius Strip has only one side and one edge. It is easily confused in thinking that it contains more then one side, which is false. For example, you can trace your finger along one side of it going around the loop and you may think you are on the other side, but you are still on the same side, it’s just the way it is constructed, to seem complex when it is simply a strip with a non-orientable surface. It was first discovered in 1858 by a German mathematician and astronomer named August Ferinand Mobius. I will further discuss the history of how the Mobius Strip was developped, also a brief biography on August Mobius, The Mobius Strip as a Universal meaning, and how to construct your own mobius strip.

August Survey Finds "Enormous Potential" for Growth in Religious Investing
A national opinion survey sponsored by MMA Praxis Mutual Funds found that of the more than 1,000 investors surveyed nationwide by Opinion Research International in late June, 36% said they incorporated their faith with their finances at least part of the time. An additional 20% said they would do so if they knew how. Four out of five survey respondents said they didn't know religious-oriented mutual funds existed. The majority of these investors said they would be inclined to invest in religious funds once they learned more about them. Out of 15, 573 open-ended mutual funds in the US, 43 have a religious orientation, according to Lipper Inc. With 8 out of 10 respondents describing themselves as religious or spiritual, there appears to be room for considerable growth. Goatview Farm - The Saint Report www.goatview.com November 17 Saints o' the Day include, but are not limited to, Saint Elizabeth of Hungary (patron saint of bakers), Saint Gregory of Tours, Saint Gregory the Wonderworker, Saint Hilda, Saint Hugh of Lincoln, the Martyrs of Paraguay, and Saint Philippine Duchesne. August Mobius was born on this day in 1790. Someone once welded me a Mobius band. It was a nice present and I don't understand how I could have lost it, so I probably gave it away. In case you don't know what a Mobius band is, here's how to make one. Cut a strip of paper and fasten the two ends together, but first take one half twist. These pictures were taken from

    Making the Mobius Band
The man who welded me the Mobius band told me to pretend I was a fly and to start walking along the band. I walked my fingers around and around, AND AROUND AND AROUND!!! Why, it never ended! There was no end to a Mobius band. That is the amazing thing about them: they are one-sided, one-edged surfaces! How can you make something with two sides and two edges into something with one side and one edge and do nothing to reduce its size? It sounds impossible. I love Mobius bands. Incidentally, some people refer to them as Mobius strips. Same same.
