Make a Mobius Strip
back
Supplies: Sheet of Paper
Scissors
Pen or Pencil Where inside and outside are one and the same Think you've seen it all. Just when you thought you understand the simple little concepts like up and down, forwards and backwards, and inside and outside, Reeko comes along and throws a curve ball at ya'.
  • Cut a 2 inch strip of paper. Holding the strip out straight, give it a half twist (180 degrees) and attach the two ends together. Take a pen and draw a line along the center of the strip.
  • Surprised? Where do you end up? Is the line drawn on the inside or outside of the paper? Now cut the strip along the line you drew. How many chains do you get? Your chain is called a Mobius strip, which is a shape described by a science called topology. When you twisted your strip, the inside and outside became one continuous surface. And when you cut the strip, it became one longer chain but still had only one continuous surface. Now, try the experiment again but this time give the paper a full twist. You'll be surprised by the results. Parent's Note . During the early 1800's, the works of German mathematician August Ferdinand Mobius helped develop a study in geometry that became known as topology. Topology explores the properties of a geometrical figure that do not change when the figure is bent or stretched. sides. The Mobius strip is named after August F. Mobius, the German mathematician who discovered it.

Zadar Zen Garden is created with newspaper balls. Each newspaper ball is a pebble a pebble of information, a pebble of history. A Zen Garden is a place for contemplation and meditation, a garden that elevates its viewers to a deeper spiritual awareness and helps them gain insight into their inner wisdom. Zadar Zen Garden uses Zadar's historical information (the old newspapers) as its stepping stones and its pebbles. Through the Garden's visual and spatial arrangement, viewers are physically connected with the past while living in the present and meditating on the future. Originally there were 7 performers, and they are Yin Peet, Bojan Gagic, Josip Zanki, Boris Kajmak, Petar Stanovic, Elvis Stanovic, Claudia Nanni, with Cathy Nolan as the supporting artist stationed outside of the Garden. All were prepared to meet the purification requirement before and during the performance:

August 2001, Zadar, Croatia "After Gotovina" When I arrived in Zadar, prosecutors of the Hague tribunal announced the indictment of Croatian General Ante Gotovina for atrocities committed during Operation Storm. The Croatian army led by this general, expelled Serbs, Muslims and Roma (Gypsies) into neighboring Bosnia during and after this ethnic cleansing operation. Many of these civilians were killed. Gotovina, a native of Zadar, refused to surrender to the tribunal proclaiming innocence and went into hiding.
In Zadar, the Gotovina case stirred passions and locals placed a billboard with a picture of General Gotovina proclaiming him a hero, not a criminal . The case also brought to life the legacy of past fascism supported by some of the local Croatians. Croatia was a fascist ally with Hitler's Germany during Second World War and Gotovina serves for some as an archetype like Mussolini or Hitler. One of the signs of these ghost feelings are swastikas, anti-Semitic, anti-Gypsy and anti-Muslim statements on the city walls which I photographed.

    from WildTangent Press Release
: The WildTangent Web Driver Interactive Media Platform Combines with 3dMaxMedia's Zuma to Create Incredible Visual Effects Show. Using breakthrough technology, supergroup N'Sync in conjunction with cutting-edge musician Mobius 8 is using WildTangent's technology in a music visualization performance for their 2001 global tour.
Mobius 8 has developed a dynamic visual effects show, performed during N'Sync's main encore. The video, light and laser show is driven by 3dMaxMedia's product Zuma, which is powered by WildTangent's patented Web Driver technology.
Mobius 8's instrument, the Hydra, is the first interactive spatial instrument and is a combination of keyboard, drumset and body suit. Using 3dMaxMedia's real-time 3D graphics performance engine in conjunction with WildTangent's Web Driver, Mobius 8 translates audio into motion, controlling the video, lights and multiple lasers with each frequency generated from the Hydra. The result is a high tech, dynamic sound, light and video display that moves to the music. On N'Sync's current worldwide tour, Mobius 8 performs a solo during the show's encore, and then with the band for the song, ``Game Over.''
``WildTangent and 3dMaxMedia's break-through technology has hit the music scene with an enormous impact,'' says Mobius 8, currently performing across the country with N'Sync. ``The ability to translate my music into a visual display gives me the power to actually play the graphics, lights and video for the audience. The combination of sight and sound is incredible.''

The surreal hospital-based story from 1994 is revered by von Trier's fans internationally, but the addition of Stephen King as both the series writer and executive producer will ensure a strong US audience. Meanwhile, von Trier is preparing for "Dogville," which will be shot on a soundstage at Sweden's Trollhatten studio on a bare set, allowing the enigmatic director to focus completely on characters, lighting and sound.

Laurie David is not your typical Think Globally, Act Locally sort of environmentalist. Her husband, Larry David, co- created Seinfeld , for one thing, and now stars in his own series, Curb Your Enthusiasm . And David herself travels in privileged Hollywood circles. But she flips their good fortune on its head, mining her connections to actors, producers and movie execs to advance populist environmental campaigns. She’s the engine behind the Detroit Project and its controversial anti-SUV ads, and without her, one Santa Monica dealership would not be leading the country in sales of Toyota’s gas/electric hybrid, the Prius. DEBORAH VANKIN tells us how David puts celebrity activism in the driver’s seat.

Dubbed "the King of emerging market funds" by The Wall Street Journal, the flamboyant Mobius has out-earned all competitors on the international market for the past decade. "Mobius is the ultimate road warrior," USA Today has declared, "[and] the industry's best known name in international investing." According to Mobius-manager of the enormously profitable Templeton Emerging Growth Fund-the next generation of investors will have to look overseas for high returns, and in his new book, PASSPORT TO PROFITS (Warner Books Hardcover; August 12, 1999; $25.00), written with business journalist Stephen Fenichell, he shares his time-tested strategies for investment abroad. Since 1987, the number of global and international investment funds has grown from less than a dozen to more than one thousand. Despite the recent volatility in domestic and foreign markets, the creation of stock market infrastructures in Eastern Europe and some Third World countries has opened up possibilities for returns far in excess of domestic returns. In PASSPORT TO PROFITS, Mark Mobius examines the exciting developments in Eastern Europe, Asia, Latin America, and "the final frontier""Africa"and trumpets the benefits of holding stocks and fund shares in these emerging markets.
