(update 2003/3/18) The Research Institute for Mathematical Sciences (abbreviated as RIMS)
was founded in April 1963 as a cooperative research institute at the inter-university level,
with the aim of promoting research in the mathematical sciences. ¢£ Contents ¢£ LOCATION DIRECTOR COOPERATIVE RESEARCH INTERNATIONAL PROJECT RESEARCH ... STAFF ACTIVITIES
LOCATION How to get to RIMS
RIMS is situated on the North Campus of Kyoto University, adjacent to the Botanical Garden of the Faculty of Science. The Institute is housed in a four-story building having a floor space of 3,914m , including a basement built on a 1,310m ground area.
DIRECTOR
Yoichiro Takahashi
COOPERATIVE RESEARCH Joint Research Service (in Japanese)
In addition to the activities of the RIMS staff, which are described in detail below, various projects are planned and approved to promote nation-wide and international cooperative research. RIMS invites competent individual researchers as short term (1 - 2 weeks) and long term (1 - 6 months) research visitors, thus accepting groups of researchers from different institutions who will carry on cooperative research on specific topics, and sponsoring symposia or workshops on a wide range of mathematical sciences. Table 1 shows the number of projects run as well as the number of participants who stayed at RIMS in the academic year 1999-2002.

At the close of the 19th century, David Hilbert, the leading mathematician of his time, addressed the Second International Congress of Mathematics in Paris. He gave a list of 23 problems, covering much of the mathematical landscape of his day. These “Paris problems” have well withstood the test of time. As the current century draws to a close, there have naturally been attempts to emulate Hilbert’s feat. It is not an easy task.

Subj-class: Algebraic Geometry
We show that if a flat group scheme acts properly, with finite stabilizers, on an algebraic space, then a quotient exists as a separated algebraic space. More generally we show any flat groupid for which the family of stabilizers is finite has a uniform geometric, uniform categorical quotient in the category of algebraic spaces. Our argument is elementary and essentially self contained.

Born 23 Feb 1951
Japanese mathematician who has made important contributions to the field of algebraic geometry. His major work, in which he proved the existence of minimal models for all three-dimensional algebraic varieties (Jan 1988), has been dubbed Mori's Program. Within ten years since his first published paper, Mori had thereby completed what many said could never be done. In 1979, Mori published his first major results, a proof of the Hartshorne conjecture, which stated that a certain class of algebraic varieties are projective in nature. In other words, these varieties or sets of solutions to given polynomial equations could be described using projective geometry. He was awarded the Fields Medal in 1990 for his work in algebraic geometry. Allan MacLeod Cormack
(source)
Born 23 Feb 1924; died 7 May 1998.
South African-born American physicist who formulated the mathematical algorithms that made possible the development of a powerful new diagnostic technique, the cross-sectional X-ray imaging process known as computerized axial tomography (CAT) scanning. He first described this in two papers in 1963 and 1964. X-ray tomography is a process by which a picture of an imaginary slice through an object (or the human body) is built up from information from detectors rotating around the body. For this work, he was awarded a share of the 1979 Nobel Prize. Cormack was unusual in the field of Nobel laureates because he never earned a doctorate degree in medicine or any other field of science.
