Press Releases Messrs. Shigebumi Saito and Wataru Mori Selected as the Persons of Cultural Merit The FY 1998 Order of Culture awardees and Persons of Cultural Merit were announced by the government on October 23. Included among the fifteen persons of cultural merit were Mr. Shigebumi Saito (79 years of age), former member of the Space Activity Council, and Mr. Wataru Mori (72 years of age), former member of the Council for Science and Technology. The ceremony for the Persons of Cultural Merit was held on November 4 in Tokyo. Mr. Shigefumi Saito majored in Space Electronic Engineering and other subjects, before being assigned as Professor of the Institute of Space and Astronautical Science of the University of Tokyo (Now the Institute of Space and Astronautical Science of the Ministry of Education) while also acting as the conductor of the Lambda Rocket launch experiment. He was then assigned as the Executive Director (part-time) of the National Space Development Agency of Japan, and is now the Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Research Institute for the Next-Generation Satellite Broadcasting System. Mr. Wataru Mori assumed the office of Professor of Pathology and Dean of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Tokyo, and then President of the University of Tokyo. He majored in pathology, and is a member of the melatonin discovery group now attracting worldwide attention. He also assumed the position of President of the Japanese Pathological Society. He is now President of the Japanese Association of Medical Sciences.

FIELDS MEDALLISTS' LECTURES
edited by Sir Michael Atiyah (Trinity College, Cambridge) (CE-Saclay)
Although the Fields Medal does not have the same public recognition as the Nobel Prizes, they share a similar intellectual standing. It is restricted to one field — that of mathematics — and an age limit of 40 has become an accepted tradition. Mathematics has in the main been interpreted as pure mathematics, and this is not so unreasonable since major contributions in some applied areas can be (and have been) recognized with Nobel Prizes. The restriction to 40 years is of marginal significance, since most mathematicians have made their mark long before this age. A list of Fields Medallists and their contributions provides a bird's eye view of mathematics over the past 60 years. It highlights the areas in which, at various times, greatest progress has been made. This volume does not pretend to be comprehensive, nor is it a historical document. On the other hand, it presents contributions from 22 Fields Medallists and so provides a highly interesting and varied picture. The contributions themselves represent the choice of the individual Medallists. In some cases the articles relate directly to the work for which the Fields Medals were awarded. In other cases new articles have been produced which relate to more current interests of the Medallists. This indicates that while Fields Medallists must be under 40 at the time of the award, their mathematical development goes well past this age. In fact the age limit of 40 was chosen so that young mathematicians would be encouraged in their future work.

Birational Geometry of Algebraic Varieties
Janos Kollár, Shigefumi Mori
In stock One of the major discoveries of the last two decades in algebraic geometry is the realization that the theory of minimal models of surfaces can be generalized to higher dimensional varieties. This generalization, called the minimal model program or Mori’s program, has developed into a powerful tool with applications to diverse questions in algebraic geometry and beyond. This book provides the first comprehensive introduction to the circle of ideas developed around the program, the prerequisites being only a basic knowledge of algebraic geometry. It will be of great interest to graduate students and researchers working in algebraic geometry and related fields.
Reviews
‘ … the book is very crisply written, unusually easy to read for a book covering advanced material, and is moreover very concise for the book for reference, but is also an ideal book on which to base a series of seminars for research students, or indeed for research students to read by themselves.’ P. M. H. Wilson, Bulletin of the London Mathematical Society ‘ … a very good survey of present research.’ European Mathematical Society
