On Motivation and Understanding
February 1999 This is the fourth in the series of columns (see links at the bottom of the page) devoted to Frank Morley's work. It's time to deal with what amounts to his proof of the Trisector Theorem. I'll outline Morley's reasoning first and then supply necessary details The second section of Morley's [1929] paper begins with the following paragraph: A three-line has four inscribed circles. Their centers are the incenters of the three-line. We ask then for the curves C n which touch n +1 given lines, and more particularly for their centers. These centers we call the incenters of the (n +1)-line. For a 3-line there exist 4 circles that touch all three lines. For a 4-line there are 8 cardioids that touch all 4 lines. Increasing the number of cusps, curves are produced that touch all n +1 lines for greater n's. Morley first found a general formula for the incenters in terms of the reflections of the origin in each of the lines. By letting one of the lines vary, he got the locus of incenters of the curves that touch the remaining n lines. For example, if n = 2, we are talking of circles that touch three lines. With one line removed (or varying), the focus is on the circles that touch the remaining two lines. The locus of their centers is the union of two angle bisectors - two one line sets forming an angle of

Doodling and Miracles
November 1998 Almost 100 years ago, Frank Morley proved a curious theorem from elementary geometry that unbelievably remained unknown until 1899. With time, the theorem became known in mathematical folklore as Morley's Miracle Morley's Trisector Theorem is a more mundane term.) The theorem states that The three points of intersection of the adjacent trisectors of the angles of any triangle form an equilateral triangle. Frank V. Morley, the youngest of Morley sons, recollects [Oakley and Baker] I was a school-boy when my father, who was almost forty years older than I was, sketched for me, free-hand, a pencilled diagram of the simplest form of the above-discussed theorem in plane geometry. I tested it once with my own drawing instruments. No matter what shape of the original triangle I started with, there in its midriff was an equilateral triangle, picked out by the trisectors. It was wizard, it was weird - and it was True! (Personally, drawing by hand, I have never succeeded to get anything that remotely resembled a polygon, let alone an equilateral triangle. If you like me, the applet below will save you from frustration you may experience watching irregular shapes emerge on paper all your efforts notwithstanding - the vertices of the triangle are draggable.)

History
In 1936 the E. C. Schirmer Music Company published a collection of 30 works chosen and edited by its editor-in-chief, Henry Clough-Leighter. This collection, "The A Cappella Singer," became one of the most widely circulated and often printed music anthologies in the 20th century. Its success lay partly in the variety of its works—Italian madrigals, French chansons, English madrigals, even a pair of Russian romantic part-songs. In essence, "The A Cappella Singer" achieved what so many Renaissance collections sought to achieve and did—popularity and demand—with a well-chosen assortment of music from the Renaissance and spanning four centuries as well. Set to texts that are alternately playful, contemplative, bawdy and full of double entendre, these selections can be immediately engaging to performer and audience alike. The preface to "The A Cappella Singer" by Augustus D. Zanzig notes another goal: "...to bring much of this music in most engaging variety and excellence into schools, colleges, universities, clubs, communities and, best of all, into homes." The last criterion of this goal is exactly the same as in the Renaissance. Then, printed collections were purchased by the upper class and sung at parties in homes. More recently, hearing or participating in a madrigal group will frequently include exposure to "The A Cappella Singer" (the "old war horse," "gray book" or "Bible"). Now, with the first complete recording, four centuries of music meets modern technology, permitting one to discover, rediscover, and enjoy "The A Cappella Singer" whenever one chooses.

Mount Shasta as a Visual Resource
Woodblock Artists:
Early 1900s
The period between 1915 and 1930 was one of continued innovation in the portrayal of Mount Shasta. The Plein Air artists, as discussed in a previous chapter, were at the forefront of creative enterprise. At the same time, however, there were other developments entering into the art scene. The technique of woodblock printing was one of these develpments and it resulted in some of the most striking images of the mountain ever made.
Frank Morley Fletcher (1866-1949)
In 1923 Frank Morley Fletcher left his position as director of the Edinburgh College of Art to come to America to be the first director of the newly formed Santa Barbara School of the Arts. Already fifty-seven years old, he brought with him an English tradition of woodblock printing of which he himself was the major exponent. Already by1916 he had encapsulated his experience in a successful book titled Woodblock Printing The Print Makers Society of California said of him: To say anything about English blockprints and omit mention of the leader in that country's movement would be impossible. Mr. Frank Morley Fletcher was the man who brought the blockprint in England to its high development, and all English workers trace directly to his influence.
