/*Current date script credit: Website Abstraction (www.wsabstract.com) Over 200+ free scripts here! */ Lafayette, Louisiana - the heartbeat of Acadiana - is where you can truly feel the pulse of Cajun Country. This cultural oasis on the bayou blends contemporary sophistication of a cosmopolitan city with a unique heritage and culture hard to find anywhere this side of Europe. Nowhere in the world is the variety greater and the food spicier than in Lafayette. The city boasts a tantalizing selection of restaurants, which offer such Cajun and Creole delicacies as seafood gumbo, crawfish étouffé and jambalaya. Whether it's elegant French cuisine or just good old home cooking, Lafayette's menus hit the spot. Born out of the enduring spirit of the Acadians and Creoles, Cajun and Zydeco music is as much a part of the landscape as meandering bayous and moss-draped oaks. To find true Cajun and Zydeco music, visit one of the many dancehalls or restaurants that feature music. In Acadiana, festivals are as much a part of daily life as good music and good food. Year-round festivals include: Mardi Gras, the second largest celebration in Louisiana; Festival International de Louisiane which celebrates South Louisiana's link to the French-speaking communities of the world; the Breaux Bridge Crawfish Festival in honor of the succulent "mudbug;" the "Le Cajun" Music Awards Festival where the best in Cajun music is honored each year; the Southwest Louisiana Zydeco Festival featuring the area's best Zydeco music and Creole food; Festivals Acadiens, a combination of festivals celebrating everything uniquely Cajun; and "A Cajun Christmas" throughout the holiday season.

Jean Mouton paved the way from the late medieval soundscape of Du Fay (early 1400s) to that of the Palestrina (mid 1500s) and Gabrieli. His 8-part motet, Nesciens Mater is a mind-boggling quadruple canon, with four parts in round simultaneously, and at different pitches, resulting in elegant and extraordinarily beautiful polyphony.

    Evangeline
The Tragedy of God's Little Angel
by Jim Bradshaw, City Editor Each Year at Mardi Gras, the mythical rulers King Gabriel and Queen Evangeline return to Acadiana. They are named for the lovers in Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's epic poem, Evangelinea tragic tale of two young people who were separated at the time of the Acadian exile and wandered the countryside in search of each other. Evangeline was published in 1847, some 92 years after the exile. At the time, the story of the deportation was not well known outside of the Acadian communityand had hardly been commited to paper within it. According to most accounts, Longfellow heard the story from Rev. Horace Lorenzo Conolly, a native of Maine who became rector of St. Matthew's Episcopal Church in south Boston. He had heard it, we're told, from a parishioner, and had passed it on to Longfellow's friend, Nathaniel Hawthorne. The poet first heard the tale in May 1844, when Conolly and Hawthorne were at a dinner party at Longfellow's home. According to Hawthorne's account, "the dinner was late, and we sat long," and Conolly told the story to the poet during the after-dinner conversation. Hawthorne had heard it some time earlier. On October 24, 1838, he'd written in his notebook that Conolly "heard from a French Canadian the story of a young couple in Acadia." According to Hawthorne's notes:

    Acadian tale inspired Longfellow
    by Jim Bradshaw
The Evangeline Oak stands stately alongside Bayou Teche at St. Martinville, a reminder of the cruel, romantic tale of the Acadian exile of 1755. It is beneath this tree that Gabriel and Evangeline, the Acadian lovers made legend by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, supposedly were reunited. It is a lovely tale, but it is fiction. "Evangeline" is the story of two young people who were separated at the time of the Acadian exile and who wandered in search of each other. It was published in 1847 some 92 years after the exile. At the time, the story of the deportation was not well known outside of the Acadian community, nor had it been well preserved within it. According to most accounts, Longfellow heard the story from Rev. Horance Lorenzo Conolly, a native of Maine who became rector of St. Matthew's Episcopal church in south Boston. He had heard it from a parishioner and had passed it on to Longfellow's friend, Nathaniel Hawthorne.
