I have been researching my family history since about 1995 when I realised that no one living knew anything about our father's ancestors. (Our maternal side, mostly in Jersey and New Zealand, had been quite well researched previously back to the C16.) All I was told as a child was that "Every generation had a doctor, or someone in the Royal Navy —or both— and we are related to THE Thomas Muir." Well, nearly true... Left: all that remains of my great grandfather George William Muir's (picture top left) which he was awarded by the French for his service as Captain Stephen Lushington's ADC in the Naval Brigade during the Russian (or Crimean) War of 1854 to 1856. As a result of this family connection I am now a keen student of this period and am a member of the Crimean War Research Society. Thomas Muir of Huntershill
I am not related to THE Thomas Muir, though I was always told I was! But I am named after him! Click image for my small page about him with useful links.

http://www.thomasmuir.com/huntershill.html
A GENEALOGICAL PROBLEM
All through the first forty years of my life I heard from members of the older generations of my family that "they believed that we were related to Thomas Muir of Huntershill." But no one was quite sure how. There is a very good reason for that: we're not! I am 95% certain. I have traced our Muir line back to a George Muir who was the right age to be a possible cousin of Thomas Muir. Unfortunately his probable place of birth and parents would seem to exclude the possibility of any connection.
It will have been noticed that I write "possible cousin." Herein lies the problem with all alleged connections to Thomas Muir of Huntershill. Thomas Muir never married. He didn't have time in his short life. It is almost certain he had no issue. (And there appears to be nothing to suggest he even had a lover at any time.) He had one sister who married a former Royal Naval officer called David Blair. This leaves us with the siblings of TM's parents, James and Margaret, née Smith. I have found it a complete nightmare trying to identify TM's uncles and aunts, and I am beginning to think it is impossible. James is believed to have had several brothers, but I don't know who they were for certain.

    John Muir:
    America’s Naturalist
    by Thomas Locker
    Introduction by Dr. Edgar Wayburn
Past President, The Sierra Club In a series of richly painted landscapes, Thomas Locker brings the world and words of John Muir to readers, both the young and the young at heart. Equally at home in the wildernesses of California and Alaska, Muir wrote charming lyrical descriptions of nature for the benefit of future generations. Muir recognized that wilderness should not only be appreciated but should be fought for as well. He sparked the preservationist movement in the United States and throughout the world, working with President Theodore Roosevelt to establish national parks and spearheading the founding of the Sierra Club, an organization that to this day carries on the work he began long ago of encouraging citizen action to protect the natural world. This book is the second in a series of illustrated books by Thomas Locker introducing readers to notable people who loved and wrote about the American land, and especially about the value of wilderness.
