Surface Evolution under Curvature Flows
Conglin Lu, Yan Cao, David Mumford Journal of Visual Communication and Image Representation Vol. 13, No. 1/2, March/June 2002, pp. 65-81.
Abstract
In many areas of computer vision, such as multiscale analysis and shape description, an image or surface is smoothed by a nonlinear parabolic partial differential equation to eliminate noise and to reveal the large global features. An ideal flow, or smoothing process, should not create new features. In this paper we describe in detail the effect of a number of flows on surfaces on the parabolic curves, the ridge curves, and umbilic points. In particular we look at the mean curvature flow and the two principal curvature flows. Our calculations show that two principal curvature flows never create parabolic and ridge curves of the same type as the flow, but no flow is found capable of simultaneously smoothing out all features. In fact, we find that the principal curvature flows in some cases create a highly degenerate type of umbilic. We illustrate the effect of these flows by an example of a 3-D face evolving under principal curvature flows.

As an artist who works in the materials of software and, occasionally, electronics, I am pleasantly surprised to find a historical relationship between aesthetics and technology in Lewis Mumford's Technics and Civilisation.
Technology, Mumford writes, has a way of pervading and sustaining life. The machine often is devised to extend humanity's reach into the world. It provides us with a way of shaping the world around us, and improves our prospects for survival as a species.
This focus on pure function prevents the makers of technology from considering issues of aesthetics in the design of the machine. This is unfortunate; yet, there exist historical precedents in which artists have appropriated the machine for use in existing forms of art. For example, Ferdinand Leger's painting Breakfast Table decomposes whole, organic forms, offering sampled living elements in a mechanical, two-dimensional composition.
Mumford also cites physical forms, such as sculpture and architecture, as examples in which machine and art come together in a single compositional space. For instance, architect Pier Luigi Nervi combines an elegant sense of rhythm and visual harmony with one of mathematics and structural engineering in the construction of the grandstand of a stadium in Florence, Italy.

A Survey of Mathematical Models of Perception and Inference
Professor David Mumford
Brown University In the last decade there has been an explosion of research in the fields of speech and pattern recognition, neural nets and statistical learning theory. I will try to give an overview of this research, touching on some of the central ideas. In particular I want to describe Gibbs/graphical models, context-sensitive grammatical/compositional models, the PAC model of inductive inference, the MDL principle and various algorithms for inference. Applications to vision will be used to illustrate these ideas. Tilbake til konferansesiden

Fields Medal
Historical Introduction
This is the original letter by Fields creating the endowment for the medals that bear his name. It is thought to have been written during the few months before his death. Notice that no mention is made about the age of the recipients (currently there is a 40 year-old limit), and that the medal should not be attached to any person, private or public, meaning that it shouldn't bear anybody's name. It is proposed to found two gold medals to be awarded at successive International Mathematical Congress for outstanding achievements in mathematics. Because of the multiplicity of the branches of mathematics and taking into account the fact that the interval between such congresses is four years it is felt that at least two medals should be available. The awards would be open to the whole world and would be made by an International Committee. The fund for the founding of the medals is constituted by balance left over after financing the Toronto congress held in 1924. This must be held in trust by the Government or by some body authorized by government to hold and invest such funds. It would seem that a dignified method for handling the matter and one which in this changing world should most nearly secure permanency would be for the Canadian Government to take over the fund and appoint as his custodian say the Prime Minister of the Dominion or the Prime Minister in association with the Minister of Finance. The medals would be struck at the Mint in Ottawa and the duty of the custodian would be simply to hand over the medals at the proper time to the accredited International Committee.

Abstract
When I first got involved with natural and computer vision, I discovered that no existing mathematical theory seems to express well our perception of two shapes being similar or to yield the features needed to recognize objects for vision applications. In the last decade, an interesting approach to deforming shapes was started by Miller and Grenander, using ideas from fluid mechanics. I want to outline some new results in this program and raise some problems.
About the Speaker
Professor Mumford received his PhD at Harvard University in 1961. He was a Higgins Professor of Mathematics with a joint appointment in Engineering and Applied Science at Harvard until 1997. Since then he has been a professor of Applied Mathematics at Brown University. Prof. Mumford has done work machine learning and natural intelligence, in particular the field of vision perception. Hi research focuses on statistical models for the variables of vision: direct models of the raw images, the object shapes, and the texture of object surfaces. Prof. Mumford has received numerous awards, among them the Fields Medal. He is a MacArthur Foundation Fellow and a member of the National Academy of Sciences.
