Bayesian Analysis of Low-level Vision.
Prof. David Mumford , Prof. Alan Yuille A major thrust in the vision work of the lab has been to construct more and more inclusive probability models for the set of all possible images, and to use these together with Bayesian probability theory to find estimates of the 3D structure behind real world 2D images. There are many visual cues used by people to determine depth and object boundaries. This Bayesian framework can be used to couple together diverse cues in a robust and optimal manner. This work is partially inspired by psychophysical experiments and, in turn, we attempt to use our theories to explain these experimental results. Deformable Templates for Object Recognition.

Harvey S. Karten Dustin Putman Ross Anthony Mark Leeper ... Steve Rhodes a movie review by: David Keyes It's interesting how someone can get paid simply by listening to other people's problems. Psychiatry is one of those careers that rewards wages with what may seem like minimal effortsitting in a room with a scratch pad, listening to the heartaches of others, and analyzing their sanity. People for centuries have relied either on hard labor or sturdy education to earn their cash. To them, this field might have seemed like taking an easy way out. At least that's the first impression. Psychiatrists, and their practice, are actually quite complex and involving, both mentally and psychologically. Aside from the education, one must also have patience, an open mind, sophistication, and most importantly, an ability to listen with insight. This also may help explain why so many human beings would rather have a shrink than be one. This is part of one of the many issues explored in the charming new comedy "Mumford," from acclaimed director/writer Lawrence Kasdan, who did "The Big Chill" 15 years ago. Dr. Mumford (Loren Dean), a man with obvious patience for other people's problems, jumps into the sunny town named Mumford, where he sets up shop and soon finds growing business from several town individuals, all who suffer from either social or psychological trouble. But he doesn't psychoanalyze them like the other shrinks in town. He doesn't offer his own solutions, his own explanations, or anything else for his desperate patients. He just...listens.

Harvey S. Karten Dustin Putman Ross Anthony Mark Leeper ... Steve Rhodes a movie review by: David N. Butterworth The town of Mumford is filled with so many cranks, oddballs, and eccentrics that it requires the services of not one but three licensed psychologists to keep all that angst in check. Actually, "licensed" is a bit of a stretch since the intriguing premise of Lawrence Kasdan's (The Big Chill, Silverado, Grand Canyon ) latest film is that one of these professionals is not exactly certified. So much for the drama; that "revelation" is out on the table simply from reading a twenty-five word synopsis. So what else is left? Unfortunately, not much. Mumford strives for that same multi-character ensemble chic so glowingly realized by the likes of Robert Altman and Alan Rudolph. The feel of Kasdan's film, however, is more like an extended episode of Northern Exposure, where the good doctor gets to do his thing and say his piece and everyone around him grows a little in the process. The characters who frequent the couch of Dr. Mumford (peculiarly the psychologist bears the same name of the town, but nothing really comes of that) are a wacky bunch it's true. There's a sexually-frustrated pharmacist (Pruitt Taylor Vince) who fantasizes in the style of those '50s dime-store paperbacks with names like Sucker Bait–"all I needed was a stiff drink, a cold shower, and a hot dame." There's a skateboarding head of a multi-national modem conglomerate, played by

By Roger Deitz "Layer upon layer, past times preserve themselves in the city until life itself is finally threatened with suffocation; then, in sheer defense, modern man invents the museum." Lewis Mumford, The Culture of Cities Fair enough, Mumford could be a bit of a gloomy Gus (or a gloomy Lewis if you will), but the noted social historian had one thing right our common lives can get pretty darned common. That makes our collective experience worth a look-see every now and then, if only to make some small sense out of the whole freaking mess we create and endure on a daily basis. Mumford's museum would have us look at Wooly Mammoths, Jackson Pollocks, and the Hope Diamond. With David Buskin, Rob Carlson and George Wurzbach a.k.a. Modern Man we have another kind of exhibition, an exhibition of songs wherein laughter becomes the "sheer defense," (the best defense) for many of modern man's trials and tribulations. I've known these three artists as solo performers for some time now, and I can assure you they are each in turn seriously funny; a lot funnier than Mr. Mumford. I suggest Modern Man is sort of a cross between the Bitchin' Babes and a laboratory rabbit injected with a healthy dose of testosterone. What I mean to say is, they seem cute enough, but watch out ... they bite. With the three formidable solo performers gathered together as the group

Sender: qed-owner Precedence: bulk I can't help responding to David Mumford's comments about Bourbaki. The hope was that a fairly small simple set of basic structures were the basis of most research. This seems to express the hope that all mathematical concepts can be made to be elaborations of a small set of very general basic concepts (such as topology, algebra, and "structure"). These to me to be an orthogonal issue to the question of foundations. A foundational system, such as ZFC, seems neutral on the question of whether one should elaborate a small set of general difinitions or make a much larger set of independent and much more concrete definitions with abstraction coming later. A foundational system such as Ontic can accomodate either style. The reals can be defined directly as Dedikind cuts, or defined indirectly by adding axioms to the concept of a topological field. History of the Mumford Family, Descendants of David Mumford Family Histories A History of the Mumford family and descendants of David Mumford. Copied from manuscript (badly faded) written by Anthony Wayne Mumford, January 1877. Copied by L.J. Mumford, 1941, and his daughter, Erma Mumford Hahn, 1963. Edited and augmented by Eric Mumford, 1991. Submitted by Beverly Settlemire David Mumford was born near Elizabethtown, New Jersey, on the seventh of April 1755. Of his parents we know very little. They were of English descent in moderate circumstances. So far as known there were but two children, James the oldest and David. They both entered the Army of the Revolutionary War at its beginning and continued together in the same company until James was killed in the battle of Brandywine. This left David alone as far as we can learn at present as nothing is found in books or papers that we are able to get hold. Of either father-mother-or sister except one half-brother (we know nothing). I have heard his name but have forgotten it. It was not Mumford. But I recollect my father saying he had gone to New York City and became wealthy. As for David he continued in the army, and was one of those patriots who in the winter of 1777 and '78 marked their pathway with the blood of their feet in the snow at Valley Forge. He was a man of fine appearance about 5'9" and very muscular.

" Colloquium : Thursday, May 24, 2001
Time: 4:00 pm
Location: MS 6627
Professor Mumford's visit is jointly sponsored by the Mathematics Department and IPAM. This includes a Math Department Colloquium.
Abstract:
The criteria of success in pure and applied math are very different, but there is some reason to think they may complement each other. Professor Mumford will give an easy going account of the some of the main applications that drive computer vision segmentation, image compression and object recognition and some of the hard math (and physics) which seems to clarify the applications (and some which, though attractive, seems rather to mislead). David Mumford was awarded a Fields medal in 1974 for his work in algebraic geometry. Subsequently, the direction of Mumford's work shifted from algebraic geometry to areas of applied mathematics including machine and natural intelligence.

Mumford passed away Monday, January 20, 2003, of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, after struggling with the illness for the past year. He not only left behind his wife and family, longtime friends and co-workers, but he also left behind a multitude of fans who are grateful for his contributions to Disney entertainment. Mumford spent his entire career working at Walt Disney Imagineering (WDI), rising through the ranks to the position of WDI Senior Principal Show Set Designer. He also wrote and produced (along with his longtime collaborator, Bruce Gordon) several books on Disney history, and was well known for his love of Disney lore and generosity in sharing his wealth of knowledge so freely.
