HUTCHINSON ENCYCLOPEDIA Napier, John In 1617 Scottish mathematician John Napier published his description of what was arguably the first mechanical calculator a set of numbered rods, usually made of bone or ivory and therefore known as Napier's bones. Using them, multiplication became merely a process of reading off the appropriate figures and making simple additions. (Image © Helicon) Scottish mathematician who invented logarithms in 1614 and Napier's bones, an early mechanical calculating device for multiplication and division. It was Napier who first used and then popularized the decimal point to separate the whole number part from the fractional part of a number.

Napier, John Napier, John, , Scottish mathematician. He invented logarithms and wrote Mirifici logarithmorum canonis descriptio (1614), containing the first logarithmic table and the first use of the word logarithm. His Rabdologiae (1617) gives various methods for abbreviating arithmetical calculations. One method of multiplication uses a system of numbered rods called Napier's rods, or Napier's bones; this was a major improvement on the ancient system of counters then in use. In 1619, after Napier's death, his Mirifici logarithmorum canonis constructio, which gave the method of construction of his logarithms, was published by his son Robert and edited by Henry Briggs. Napier introduced the decimal point in writing numbers. Napier was also known as an outspoken exponent of the Protestant cause. His religious writings include A Plaine Discovery of the Whole Revelation (1593), the earliest Scottish interpretation of the scriptures.

“Writing about the middle of the eighteenth century, David Hume proclaimed John Napier of Merchiston as the ‘person to whom the title of a great man is more justly due than to any other whom his country ever produced’.” When Hume awarded the first place among his countrymen to Napier, it was doubtless from an enlightened conviction that his work had been of great service to humanity. John Napier has gone down in history as the Scottish mathematician who invented logarithms (1614) and ‘Napier’s bones’, an early mechanical calculating device for multiplication and division. There is a lot, however, about the works and life of John Napier that has been obscured by the passage of time, and when it is revealed it will shed light on the intriguing personality of the man who passed among his contemporaries as a trafficker with Satan. Family History

Sir Archibald Napier, the father of John, fully maintained his ancestors reputation for energy and sagacity. In his day, he also held an important public office: he was a Justice-Depute under the Earl of Argyll and for more than thirty years he was Master of the Mint. It should be stressed that Sir Archibald identified himself with Protestantism from the first, but apparently his zeal was not such as to satisfy either religious party in the country. However, his Protestant religious inclination was to have a decisive impact on the career of his son. Sir Archibald was twice married: he had three children by his first wife, Janet Bothwell, of which the eldest was John and ten by his second wife.

También fue él quién asignó la palabra logaritmo. Independientemente de Napier pero algo después el Suizo Burgi trabajó con una tabla para la multiplicación de logaritmos.
Ni Napier ni Burgi tuvieron una base especial para sus sistemas de logaritmos. Fue el Inglés Henry Briggs, un amigo de Napier, quién comenzó a usar los logaritmos en base 10. Es por esto que llamamos logaritmos de base 10 a los logaritmos.

Nejznámìjší jsou však jeho práce z oboru logaritmù. Objevil exponenciální výrazy pro trigonometrické funkce a zavedl desetinné vyjádøení pro zlomky. Napierovy logaritmy však nebyly to, co používáme jako logaritmy dnes. Napier totiž nedošel k logaritmùm algebraickou cestou, nebo algebra byla v jeho dobì teprve v zaèátcích, nýbrž se inspiroval dynamikou. Nejvìtší obtíže Napierova logaritmu, totiž že logaritmus z jedné není roven nule, se podaøilo vyøešit spolu s Henrym Briggsem, anglickým matematikem.
